Chapter 16: A Great First Step!
Chapter 16: A Great First Step!
The commoners' wariness towards Sag diminished significantly after receiving his kindness. One of them quickly devoured the piece of meat and spoke:
"Captain, we are from Campas Town."
"Campas Town?" Akin was taken aback.
Sag turned to look at Akin.
"Captain Sag, Campas Town is famous in the East Blue for its canvas production. The cloth they make is highly sought-after," Akin explained.
"Indeed."
The commoner continued, "We were merchant sailors from Campas Town, originally sailing to deliver a batch of canvas. However, we encountered pirates along the way, and they took all our canvas. Our captain and guards tried to resist but fell into the sea and went missing."
"Leaving a barrel of water shows some mercy," Sag nodded.
"They took everything except the canvas, and the food was lost due to the cannon attack," argued one of the commoners, raising his hand.
You're quite proud.
"Captain..."
The first commoner who spoke weakly said, "I know this may be presumptuous, but could you please let us go at the next inhabited place?"
"I'm not interested in having commoners as pirates,"
Sag glanced at him and then asked Akin, "Are Campas' canvases valuable?"
"The canvases they produce are priced at 20,000 Belly each," Akin scanned the sailing ship and added. "With this ship's cargo capacity, they can carry fifty at once."
That would be a million Belly.
The number was impressive.
Sag and his foster father had worked hard farming for a year, and they hadn't earned that much. These people achieved it with just one voyage.
"What about its defensive capabilities?" Sag inquired further.
Akin understood what he was getting at.
"Campas Town itself doesn't have strong defenses, but there are frequent navy patrols, and a branch is nearby," Akin replied.
Sag nodded, "Lili."
Lili thought for a moment and said, "It's worth a try."
Sag smiled at the commoners and said, "Then, I'll send you back."
"Send, send us back," the commoners stammered, their faces turning pale. "You're going to..."
Sag bared his cold, sharp teeth and said, "I'm a pirate, so of course, I'll be robbing you."
Might as well rob them; whether it's the merchant ship or the town, it's all the same.
Such a valuable town must have a considerable amount of money.
Why bother looking for struggling towns when there's one with money?
"Captain, are we going to rob the town directly?" Paru asked excitedly.
"Indeed. Change course and head towards Campas Town,"
Sag stood up and instructed, "Lock these people up in the ship's cabin, and release them once we arrive at the town."
Several pirates followed his orders and pushed the group of commoners downstairs.
Sag, meanwhile, climbed up to the second level of the deck, where the captain's room was usually located. He pushed open the door to find the room in disarray, with books and papers scattered everywhere.
Sag grinned, unbothered by the mess, and crossed the room to pick up a chair. He sat down with a satisfied plop.
"Ah!" Sag exclaimed contentedly.
"What's so satisfying?"
The wooden door opened again, and Lili walked in. Seeing the messy captain's room, she frowned and asked, "Is there a nautical chart in the captain's room?"
"Lili!"
Sag bared his teeth in a grin and said, "Our pirate business is booming!"
"How is it booming?"
Lili replied as she squatted down to search, and her eyes soon lit up as she spotted something. "There's a nautical chart here."
"See? That's solid proof that our business is booming!"
Sag laughed heartily and said, "As a navigator, you've obtained a nautical chart, and as a captain, I've not only gained crewmates but also captured our first ship, and now we're going to raid a town. These are all good things!"
Lili pursed her lips and gently suggested, "Sag, this ship... won't support us for long-distance sailing."
"It doesn't matter!"
Sag waved his hand dismissively, "What's important is that we've taken the first step!"
Won't support long-distance sailing?
So what? It's just a broken ship.
Sag didn't care at all.
A broken ship was still a ship, and he, Sag, had finally captured one.
Taking that first step was a great achievement.
In his previous endeavors, he had never even gotten that far.
His seeds never sprouted when farming, he never caught anything while fishing, his bodyguard duties never commenced, and his mercenary work never saw battle...
He even felt that if he tried to be a farmer, he wouldn't find any manure!
What?
Are there toilets in this world?
Then he couldn't even do that!
His promising bounty hunter career had only caught pirates, but there was no reward, and after being framed by the Kingdom of Oikot, his prospects were essentially non-existent.
But now that he was a pirate, he had finally taken that first step.
As expected of the hottest career path on the high seas!
Sag spread his fingers wide and then clenched his fist tightly, as if everything around him was now within his grasp.
There was hope for the wealthy now!
"Hahaha, hahahaha!" Sag let out a wild laugh.
Lili sat beside him, holding the organized nautical chart, as she began to examine it page by page.
Infected by his laughter, the pirates outside burst into loud laughter as well. Paru banged his hand on the shield, his footsteps thumping on the deck in a rhythmic manner, and the pirates joined in, singing pirate shanties while slapping each other's backs.
Seeing the happy pirates, Ajin couldn't help but smile as well.
After experiencing so many days of failure, they had finally boarded a ship again!
The rickety ship, accompanied by these strange sounds, sailed upon the sun-kissed sea, leaving ripples in its wake as it ventured toward the distant horizon.
...
Two days later.
The ship finally arrived at Campas Town.
Campas Town was not far from their current location, and the older pirates like Ajin knew the route in the East Blue. If not for the severe damage to the ship, they could have reached it in just one day.
This town was located on an elliptical small island, and the island had no barriers surrounding it. It was a vast plain, famous for its fine cotton and flax, hence the superior canvas produced there.
The town itself was situated on the eastern side of the island, and the damaged ship was now approaching that very landing point.
Sag stood on the railing of the second floor, with Lili attending by his side, looking down at the pirates on the deck who were drawing their swords with malicious grins, and the civilians huddled in the corner, ready to disembark.
One of the civilians looked up at Sag, gritting his teeth before stepping forward and speaking, "Captain, why don't you give up? You saved us, and Campas Town has well-equipped guards. The Navy will also arrive as soon as possible. You only have thirty or so people, and that's just not enough! Let us go, and I'll give you a new ship!"
A single-masted sailboat would cost somewhere between sixty to a hundred million Belly. With their combined efforts, they could scrape together that amount.
Over these two days, the pirates hadn't abused them. Instead, they had invited them up to eat on time, treating them like guests aside from the fact that their sleeping conditions weren't that great.
In the words of Captain Sag, they were all unfortunate folks, and there was no need to treat them differently.
He was a magnanimous captain.
Even as a pirate, he deserved respect.
Sag smiled faintly and looked down at the pirates below, "My little ones, he's asking you to give up."
Clang!
Lili drew her slender sword, her eyes turning cold.
"Captain Sag, we are pirates!"
Ajin tightly gripped the walking stick in his hand and laughed loudly, "Pirates don't accept handouts! If we want something, we take it by force! Men of the sea fear neither life nor death!"
"Well said, Captain Ajin!" the pirates chimed in.
Ajin's position as the combat captain remained unchanged by Sag, so the ordinary pirates naturally followed the old routine as well.
This way, Sag didn't have to worry about leading these ordinary pirates.
"You're right!"
Sag pointed forward, "Since we've chosen to be pirates, we'll do things the pirate way. As for all those things he mentioned..."
He clenched his fist tightly and sneered, "I want them all!"
Approaching the ship?
With his streak of bad luck, what could he possibly gather?
It was better to take matters into his own hands and seize what he wanted.
Furthermore, the boldness in their words indicated that this town was even richer and more worthy of plunder.
The ship sailed along the boundary of the island, drawing closer to the landing point of Campas Town. Being a port town, they only needed to get near.
As the town came into view, the pirates on deck suddenly froze, their eyes fixed on the unexpected scene before them.
The port was filled with wreckage, and extending from the port inward, the ground was cracked with countless pits. Buildings were either half-destroyed or had completely collapsed, charred black marks evident everywhere.
The entire town had been ravaged!
