Chapter 1592: A War Without Victors (Forty-Two)
"Request for leave? Well, of course, that's fine. However, you'll need to make up for the classes you'll miss. I know you both are talented, but the basic Auror training curriculum is essential. It will better ensure your safety and help you adapt to the work of an Auror more quickly."
Gavin Robards looked at Harry and Ron, who had come to request time off, with some displeasure. Aurors rarely took vacations, except when they were injured and hospitalized, especially in times like these when overtime work was commonplace.
However, he now had people asking for time off?
If it had been anyone else, Gavin would have given them an earful, but the people requesting leave were Harry Potter, the Savior, and Ron Weasley, who had also made outstanding contributions during the Wizarding War. As the Director of the Auror Office, he certainly wasn't going to refuse them.
Ultimately, the most significant value of Harry Potter becoming an Auror was to endorse Kingsley and show the entire British wizarding community his support for the new minister. This was even more meaningful than Harry helping the Ministry combat Death Eaters and dark wizards.
After closing the door to Gavin Robards' office, Ron breathed a sigh of relief and turned to Harry, "That was easier than I thought."
"It's normal," Harry said. "We're different from the others. We're more like mascots in the Ministry. Our absence won't affect the Aurors' regular work, so Mr. Robards has no reason to make things difficult for us." Harry saw things clearly and had never been dissatisfied because he had known about this a long time ago.
But Ron, as if he hadn't heard Harry's words, was eager to meet up with Albert.
They had agreed to pick up Hermione today.
Yes, they were going to Australia to bring Hermione back to Britain.
Ever since Ron had indirectly asked Albert about Hermione's return date through Ginny, he had expressed to Albert his wish to accompany Harry to Australia to bring Hermione home.
Naturally, Albert had no objections and readily agreed.
"How are we getting to Australia?"
After meeting at the agreed-upon location, Ron asked impatiently.
"It's simple. We just need to Apparate there directly," Albert said, leaving Harry and Ron stunned.
"Are you sure you're not joking?"
"Apparate from here to Australia?"
Harry and Ron exchanged glances, then looked at Albert, "Are you sure there won't be a problem Apparating halfway across the world like that?"
"Of course not."
"Sorry..." Ron suspected that his ears were deceiving him, "I've never heard of anyone Apparating across half the globe. That's truly astonishing."
"I think you may have misunderstood. We won't be Apparating to Australia in one go. Instead, we'll be Apparating in batches, like a relay, continuously Apparating forward."
As he spoke, Albert put down his briefcase and gestured for the two to wait inside.
"Do we need to wait inside the case?" Ron asked, confused.
"Long-distance Apparition is similar to using a Portkey, and it can be quite uncomfortable," Albert explained to the two in front of him. "If you don't want to stay in the case, you can come with me and experience the feeling of long-distance Apparition. Although it may make you feel unwell, it will help your body adapt to Apparition more quickly."
"Don't worry, we've used Portkeys before, and they don't affect us much," Ron assured, eager to know how Albert planned to get to Australia.
"Hold my hand."
Before Harry and Ron could react, Albert took their hands and Apparated away.
Just as Albert had said, it was not a pleasant process. When Albert finally arrived in Australia and met Hermione and her family, Harry and Ron's faces were pale, as they had been crouching on the ground, vomiting profusely just a while ago.
Hermione waved goodbye to her family and entered Albert's trunk with her luggage. Upon seeing Harry and Ron lying on the sofa like dead dogs, she immediately understood what they had gone through. "Are you two alright?" she asked, concerned.
"Not really. I still feel nauseous," Ron replied, his face still pale.
Seeing Hermione, Ron finally regained some spirit and wanted to give her a long-awaited hug, but his body obviously wouldn't allow it.
"It's similar to Portkey sickness. I did warn them," Albert shrugged, refusing to mention that he had extended the distance of their Apparition.
"I thought you had some potions for that last time?" Hermione said.
"I gave them the potions, but their symptoms are even worse than yours were," Albert said helplessly, indicating that he couldn't do much but let the symptoms wear off.
"They haven't passed their Apparition test yet, so they're not used to the feeling," Hermione said, giving Albert a suspicious look, wondering if he had intentionally exhausted them.
"Apparition is a very useful skill. I suggest you both spend more time practicing and take the test as soon as possible," Albert advised.
He smiled and nodded at Hermione, then turned to leave, ready to take them back to Britain.
"How's the Auror job going?" Hermione asked, taking a seat on a single sofa beside them.
"The pay is good, but it's busy," Ron mumbled. "There's hardly a day off, and we have to make time to study for Auror knowledge."
"We're basically mascots at the Ministry," Harry said, his eyes closed as he leaned against the sofa. "Those Aurors aren't that great, but they love to boss us around and don't want to admit we're capable."
"They probably think you lack experience," Hermione said, feeling Harry's view was a bit extreme.
"I don't think so. It's more like office politics. Some people are just jealous because we were fast-tracked to become Aurors while they had to slog for three years," Harry explained, seeing the situation clearly. "And they might be afraid that we'll replace them soon."
"I heard from Albert that your parents plan to settle in Australia?" Ron asked, suppressing his discomfort.
"Yes, they're staying in Australia, but I plan to return to Britain," Hermione said without hesitation. "Albert mentioned building a wizarding village, and he said he'd give me a house there if I wanted to help out. I could be neighbors with Harry."
Harry turned to look at Ron, opened his mouth as if to say something, but ultimately said nothing.
If that happened, Ron would be the only one without his own house.
Harry could tell that Ron liked Hermione, and once they got married, there wouldn't be an issue. But he felt things might not go that smoothly. Ron had been secretly admiring Hermione, and even though he had almost confessed his feelings, there was no guarantee she would reciprocate. Harry didn't want any tension between them over this matter.
Otherwise, they might not even remain friends.
They soon returned to Britain and began arranging Hermione's accommodation.
The Granger family home was still standing, but it needed a lot of cleaning before it could be habitable again.
Moreover, it would require a thorough inspection to ensure no Death Eaters had left any dangerous Dark Magic residue.
So, Ron suggested that Hermione stay with his family for the time being, keeping Ginny company, and that way, Dobby the house-elf wouldn't need to travel back and forth every day to take Ginny to work.
Hermione hesitated, as she preferred to live alone.
With some persuasion from Harry and Ron, Hermione eventually agreed to stay with the Weasleys temporarily and decide on her living arrangements for the next few months.
