Chapter 159: Reflection
Chapter 159: Reflection
Hermione took a sip of water and placed the cup on the table, adopting a serious listening posture. Liam cleared his throat and began, "Indeed, Pureblood Wizards delve deeply into Dark Magic research, but they rarely need to use it in their daily lives. After all, most Pureblood families have accumulated enough wealth and built extensive networks to sustain their lifestyles. They don't need to get their hands dirty."
Hermione nodded in agreement. Liam continued, "Muggle-born Wizards, on the other hand, have no social connections in the Wizarding world. After graduation, their only options are to join the Ministry of Magic or work in shops. However, the closed and small scale of the wizarding world means that the number of available jobs each year is far from sufficient. This means many Muggle-born Wizards face unemployment right after graduation."
"In the Muggle world, they might only have a primary school education, which means they can't pursue further studies or find good jobs. If they can't control their use of magic, they will quickly be arrested by the Ministry of Magic. In other words, once Muggle-born Wizards choose to enter the Wizarding world, they are essentially cut off from the Muggle world, with no way back."
"Even in the Wizarding world, they have few ways to acquire knowledge outside of school. In the world of magic, knowledge equals power, and power equals status. Without sufficient knowledge, they are destined to remain at the bottom."
"Occasionally, a few lucky ones might become part of a Pureblood family, and this is more common for women. They become full-time housewives or use their husband's influence to enter Pureblood circles. For example, several shop owners in Diagon Alley are known as 'Mrs. So-and-so,' and some of them are Muggle-born Wizards. However, the male shop owners are all Purebloods."
Hermione opened her mouth to say something but then seemed to think better of it and slumped back.
"Jobs in the Wizarding world are hard to come by, and the Muggle world is no longer an option. In this situation, they have no choice but to risk learning Dark Magic, which is dangerous for both the user and the target, to boost their power. However, the Dark Magic circulating outside often has significant side effects, and without the valuable experience of Pureblood Wizards, they easily fall into darkness. Many Dark Wizards in Knockturn Alley come from this background."
After Liam finished speaking, the dormitory fell silent. Then Hermione asked in a strange tone, "Is all of this really true? How could I not know anything about it?"
"Of course, you wouldn't know. As students, our activities are limited to Diagon Alley, Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, Hogwarts, and this year, Hogsmeade Village. How could we possibly see the darker side of the Wizarding world?"
Hermione glared at Liam.
"It's hard to imagine. I've never paid attention to these things. Are you saying all of this is true?"
"It is. The Ministry of Magic and Diagon Alley keep records of everyone's backgrounds, and the number of Dark Wizards caught each year is not a secret. Percy has told me a lot about this, and he has no reason to lie to me. Besides, I think this situation makes logical sense."
"Logical? I don't think it's logical to discriminate against Muggle-born Wizards and Muggles. Why do the Pureblood Wizards do this?" Hermione asked, puzzled.
"Like the Greek and Latin exams in Britain's civil service, where public education institutions can't find teachers for Greek and Latin, only private noble schools can provide such instruction from middle school onwards. By maintaining the weight of Greek and Latin in the civil service exams, they can pretend to be fair and just while preserving the upper class's monopoly on positions. The same applies to the Muggle world and the Wizarding world", Liam explained, using the current state of the Muggle world to help Hermione understand why Pureblood families act this way.
"Unjust, is this what lies hidden beneath the beautiful and magical facade of the Wizarding World?" Hermione placed her water glass on the table, leaned back in her chair, and closed her eyes, lost in thought.
The sunlight slowly shifted westward, casting a golden-red glow on the red wallpaper and carpet of the room. The afternoon classes had definitely started, but Hermione remained motionless in her chair. In this situation, Liam could only give up his afternoon classes and stay with her.
Finally, Hermione snapped back to reality and said, "Sorry, I kept you from your classes. Let's grab our books and head over; we might still catch the second class."
Liam let out a sigh of relief when he saw Hermione return to her normal self. He had been worried that his words might have a negative impact on her. Even though she would one day become the head of the Ministry of Magic and lead the Wizarding World through reform, she was only thirteen or fourteen years old, and such heavy topics were a bit much for her age.
In truth, Liam had said so much today because he was also at a loss. Initially, when he realized he had been reborn, he decided to focus on making money and living a good life. Later, with the Golden Finger, he hoped to find a way back home. After starting at Hogwarts and becoming familiar with everyone, he felt that he should eliminate Voldemort, that inhumane villain.
Now, Liam felt that all his previous plans were within reach, but he was unsure about his future goals: returning home wasn't something that could be accomplished quickly, and he realized he might have to live in this world for a considerable time before finding a way back. In this context, this world had become very important to him.
Eliminating Voldemort would only destroy the old world, but what should the new world look like? Who would be his allies in creating this new world? Who would be his enemies? Should he participate in this process? If so, how? These were the questions Liam repeatedly pondered but had yet to find answers to.
Today, by talking so much with Hermione, he had hoped to gain some insights. However, it seemed that Hermione might not be as mature as he had imagined. But that was fine; there was still plenty of time to think about it. Not to mention, the Multiverse General Store provided him with ample references for a new world.
In the following days, everything seemed to return to normal. However, Hermione appeared busier than before. Once, while studying in the Library, Liam noticed her reading books related to the History of Magic.
During the Friday afternoon Guardian Charm class, the Combat Professor indeed brought a Dementor for a practical test. Liam, having practiced Middle Earth Daoism, which was particularly effective against such evil creatures, was only minimally affected when facing the Dementor. This allowed him to easily release a thick silver mist to block the Dementor's attack.
By the end of the class that afternoon, all three of them could face the Dementor and release a silver mist to halt its advance. Even without the Dementor, their mists faintly revealed the shape of an animal.
The professor announced that their course was complete, as he had taught them everything he could. The rest, the Physical Patronus, required constant practice and self-discovery.
After thanking the professor, Liam left the classroom, deciding to practice more on his own. He was genuinely curious about what his Patronus would look like.
