Chapter 157: Knowledge and Discussion
Chapter 157: Knowledge and Discussion
A new week had arrived, and after a week of classes, the students at Hogwarts had gradually adapted to Castrobrusso's teaching methods and the professors' accented English. As a result, everyone began to choose the classes they wanted to attend, rather than forming groups by grade to attend classes together.
Naturally, Daphne from Slytherin went to her classes alone, while Liam and Hermione went to Herbology together.
Herbology, being one of Castrobrusso's specialties, naturally had its unique aspects. Unlike the greenhouses at Hogwarts, the students were led into the Park Tunnel Network, where the greenhouses were built within the tunnel system.
After walking through the tunnels for about ten minutes, the students arrived at a massive underground space, large enough to fit a standard Quidditch pitch.
In the center of the space, a light source hung in the air, emitting both light and heat. Additionally, the area was divided into multiple zones, each with different water and heat conditions and magical power environments, tailored for cultivating various plants.
This was no ordinary greenhouse; it was essentially an Eco-Dome. Liam was amazed by Castrobrusso's grand design.
At the entrance to the Eco-Dome, the Herbology professor was already waiting. Liam quickly recognized him as the professor he had met in the Emerald Dream. The professor, clearly recognizing Liam as well, nodded and greeted him.
The third-year course content was not particularly difficult. Today's lesson was about recognizing three special Magic Plants that form a simple symbiotic system.
The Mistwillow, a small tropical tree, has leaves that can be used to treat various magical diseases. However, these plants require the moss on their trunks and the parasitic fungi on their roots to function effectively. Both the moss and the parasitic fungi cannot produce their own nutrients and must rely on the tree for sustenance.
Today's lesson focused on learning about these plants and how to determine the optimal amounts of the two parasitic organisms on each tree.
Liam was quickly drawn in by a particular piece of knowledge the professor shared. He had encountered many problems during the greening process in the Radiation World, and this knowledge provided a perfect solution to one of his most challenging issues. Even Dave and the experts in his house had been stumped by this problem.
As the old saying goes, knowledge comes at different times, and each person has their own area of expertise. No one knows everything, especially when dealing with different knowledge systems, where solutions can vary greatly. For instance, while Dumbledore could not extract memories from Voldemort's Horcrux, Uncle Kiu could retrieve some of the memories. This does not mean that Uncle Kiu was more powerful than Professor Dumbledore; it simply reflects the different methods available in different magical systems.
Similarly, Voldemort had reached a top-tier level in the defense of his own magical system. However, when faced with another magical system that he had never encountered, he was just as vulnerable.
Seizing this opportunity, Liam eagerly asked more questions and received satisfactory answers. He became excited and used the data he had collected to address many of the problems he had encountered.
Since they had met before in the Emerald Dream, the professor initially responded to Liam's questions out of a sense of camaraderie. However, when Liam presented a large amount of data, the professor was deeply moved. This was because the professor's research was in this very area, though the Wizarding World had not suffered the same extensive environmental damage as the Radiation World. Thus, he could only conduct experiments and observations by artificially creating miniature ecosystems.
Naturally, many of his research findings were far from the real situation. So when Liam shared this knowledge, the professor quickly gestured for him to stop and instructed the students to begin their independent observations.
After explaining the class content, the professor immediately pulled Liam into his office for a detailed discussion. He had been stuck on this issue for a long time, and encountering a like-minded person was an opportunity he didn't want to miss.
Half an hour later, the professor was displaying a myriad of materials on the blackboard in his office, enthusiastically explaining them to Liam. Liam, on the other side, would occasionally interject with his own questions and present a large amount of observational data as evidence. Sometimes, he would point out flaws in the professor's explanations and provide verified correct viewpoints based on his observations.
At times, they would even argue intensely over certain issues, but these arguments often led to answers, and they would continue their discussion. In short, both were now in a state of passionate engagement with knowledge.
Although they had met in the Emerald Dream before, their previous interactions had been limited to nods and pleasantries. Liam had spent more time socializing with his peers, and the professor had other responsibilities, leaving little time to engage with students. However, in this exchange, the professor's Wizarding World knowledge system and Liam's understanding of two other distinctly different worlds collided, producing unprecedented insights.
When people get excited about something, it's easy for the situation to get out of control, and this discussion was no exception.
Liam easily obtained knowledge during the discussion that could be considered on par with the heirlooms of small Pureblood Wizarding Families. Like scientists, many wizards' life's work could be summarized in a few hours, or even a single formula. Liam felt that in just a few hours, he had extracted most of the valuable knowledge from the professor.
Of course, both parties benefited equally from the conversation. Faced with Liam's extensive, detailed, and effective data and unique perspectives, the professor believed that a project he thought would take a lifetime could be completed in just a few months.
When the discussion was nearing its end, the bell signaling the end of the class rang. Liam was surprised to realize it was already noon, and he had spent the entire morning in discussion.
However, Liam had gained a lot from this morning. Given the density of Wizarding World schools, it was clear that each professor could influence almost all the next generation of students in their region. In such a context, only the best of the best were selected as professors, and the fruits of a professor's life's work were not to be underestimated. This was why the professor had decided to bring Liam to his office to avoid all the students: because knowledge in the Wizarding World was the most precious of all.
If the professor hadn't realized that the materials Liam had were the result of extensive resources and time (whether from Dave or the house, they had invested a lot of effort into botany research, with some observational data spanning over a century), he wouldn't have discussed the matter so deeply with Liam.
With the discussion concluded, Liam was about to take his leave when the professor called him back, asking him to wait a moment.
