Chapter 157: Book List and at Flourish and Blotts
Chapter 157: Book List and at Flourish and Blotts
With the help of the Quick-Reply Quill, the efficiency of replying to letters increased several times. Ivan only needed to open the envelopes, read them once, and set them aside. The quill on the table would then automatically start writing the replies.
Even so, Ivan still spent the entire morning.
When he opened the last envelope, Ivan noticed that this one was different—it was from the school.
The content informed him to go to King's Cross Station on September 1st to board the train for school, and it also included the book list for the second year.
Ivan quickly scanned through it. Apart from a few professional books for each subject, there were seven entire books by Gilderoy Lockhart, and the prices of each book were progressively higher.
Ivan immediately understood who the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor would be next term.
However, Lockhart's shamelessness also left him marveling. He actually used his position as a professor to boost the sales of his books among Hogwarts students. That was unprecedented.
"Mom, you might have to give me more Galleons. This year's books are particularly expensive, maybe a few dozen Galleons", Ivan sighed, looking at the prices listed, and reluctantly asked for help.
Although he had brought a lot of business to the family's magic shop, the money was collected by Aisia, and he couldn't get any of it. The Galleons he had saved up were almost all used up.
"A few dozen Galleons? That expensive?" Aisia, who was helping to gather the replies, curiously took the book list and glanced at it.
"Gilderoy Lockhart?" Aisia said in surprise.
"Mom, do you know him?" Ivan had a bad feeling. If he remembered correctly, Lockhart was a ladies' man with countless fans in the magical world.
Fortunately, Ivan soon saw Aisia shake her head.
"No, I don't know him, but I've heard of him. He's said to be a remarkable person, and his books have been endorsed by many prominent figures."
"Looks like you'll have a formidable Defense Against the Dark Arts professor next term", Aisia said with a smile.
Ivan pursed his lips. That guy was a fraud, only good at the Obliviate spell.
But Ivan didn't tell Aisia this. After all, the guy would be exposed as soon as he started teaching next term. Even if he didn't lose his memory because of the Chamber of Secrets incident, he would likely get into trouble.
Aisia helped Ivan organize the list and then took a hundred Galleons from the cabinet, put them in a magically enchanted bag, and handed it to Ivan.
"This should be enough. The rest is for you to use at school", Aisia said generously.
A hundred Galleons was no small amount. If it weren't for Ivan's excellent performance during the summer and his frugality, Aisia wouldn't trust a child with such a large sum of money.
In fact, Aisia had thought about closing the shop for half a day to take Ivan to Diagon Alley, but Ivan rejected the idea.
Ivan wasn't going to Flourish and Blotts just to buy books. More importantly, he remembered that one way to earn House Points was by reading magical books.
As long as he read the books to completion, he would receive House Points corresponding to the difficulty level, and it would also enhance his magical knowledge, achieving two goals at once.
So, for the remaining days before school started, Ivan planned to spend as much time as possible at Flourish and Blotts.
Aisia couldn't possibly close the shop for several days, especially now that business was just starting to pick up, so she reluctantly gave up the idea of accompanying him.
"Maybe Douglas can accompany you for the next few days", Aisia said, a bit worried about Ivan traveling through Knockturn Alley alone.
"No, I'd rather drink the Polyjuice Potion and go alone!" Ivan shook his head firmly.
He was sick of Douglas. Except for that one time at the Ministry of Magic, nothing good ever happened when they went out together.
"Alright", Aisia, unable to persuade the determined Ivan, sighed and agreed, but then added, "Don't transform into me."
Ivan nodded; he didn't have the habit of transforming into the opposite gender.
Back in his room, Ivan took out the Polyjuice Potion from the drawer. He had already brewed it and just needed to add someone else's hair to use it.
Thinking about it, Ivan added a strand of hair he had collected, took a small sip, and estimated it would be enough to get him out of Knockturn Alley.
The next moment, Ivan felt as if his body was being torn apart. A tingling sensation spread throughout his body, followed by his bones shifting and his skin stretching, and his well-fitting robe was torn open.
Ivan realized he had miscalculated. He had forgotten that transforming would tear his clothes. He should have prepared in advance.
But this small issue was no problem for Ivan, whose Transfiguration skills were nearly at level five. With a wave of his Wand, the torn clothes were quickly restored and then made wider and larger with a Transfiguration Spell.
After putting on his clothes, Ivan stood in front of the mirror and looked at the young man with freckles on his face, who was identical to Walker.
The reason he chose to transform into Walker was that the people he could collect hair from were limited to Aisia, Douglas, and Walker.
He didn't want to transform into the middle-aged man Douglas, so this was his only choice.
"Mom, I'm going out now", Ivan called out to Aisia, who was still sending letters.
Aisia turned around and looked at the young male Wizard in front of her with a strange expression but still nodded.
This was why Aisia didn't want Ivan to transform into her; it just felt weird.
Walking alone through Knockturn Alley, Ivan experienced a different kind of feeling. It seemed as if the air was filled with malice.
On the way, Ivan encountered several strangers who tried to engage him. Some were selling various items, while others invited him to "certain places" to play.
However, none of them dared to make a move. Even so, Ivan had to act tough to make them back off.
As he was about to leave Knockturn Alley, Ivan noticed that the street leading to Diagon Alley was half-blocked. A grinning old witch was pulling a young Wizard who looked quite small.
The surrounding Wizards seemed to ignore the scene, and a few male Wizards were squatting in a corner, apparently watching the commotion.
Ivan raised an eyebrow. He was hesitating whether to intervene or take a detour when he recognized the young Wizard.
That looked like Harry Potter?
But where was Hagrid? Where had he gone?
