Chapter 156: Gramps, Help Me!
Chapter 156: Gramps, Help Me!
Crash! Crash! Crash!
Every projectile slammed into Kaido’s body, creating the illusion from afar of several giant lions clamping their jaws around him and swallowing him whole.
Boom!!!
Suddenly, all the weapons exploded outward, scattering with metallic clinks and clatters.
Kaido emerged from the smoke and dust, his once-wobbling frame now steady, his eyes sharp and lucid.
That attack had sobered him right up.
Kaido fixed his gaze on the airborne Kuro. “Your skills aren’t bad,” he remarked.
“Monster!”
Kuro spat a curse, retreating swiftly.
His final shred of hope—that Kaido was just water-injected meat—vanished.
This guy was simply untouchable.
“Gaaaahhhhh!!!”
Seeing Kuro fleeing, Kaido roared furiously, fists clenched. Scales erupted across his head as it elongated, transforming into a massive dragon’s maw.
Ka-chaa!
A vortex of dark clouds spiraled high above, rumbling with muffled thunder. Howling winds tore through the air, churning the sea into violent waves.
Kaido’s arms morphed into razor-sharp dragon claws, his colossal body swelling and lengthening. His lower body coiled upward, twisting into a spiked dragon tail that lashed toward Kuro.
Dragon!
Azure Dragon!
A real, living dragon!
Amidst the crackling lightning, the dragon surged forward at blinding speed, its massive frame almost engulfing Kuro. The dragon head loomed closer, its eyes glinting with cruel amusement.
“Well done, brat. A shame you’re stuck in the Navy. Join me instead—become my subordinate.”
Kuro tilted his head, meeting the dragon’s gaze with a faint smirk. “I’m Navy, through and through.”
“Slash Wave!”
He slashed downward, unleashing a Haki-infused blade that struck the dragon’s head. The impact drove Kaido backward, giving Kuro the opening to flee.
The slash smoldered on Kaido’s jaw, leaving only a faint scar before vanishing in a swirl of smoke. The wound sealed itself instantly.
“Little brat!”
Kaido’s dragon head swung around, fixating on Kuro. With a guttural growl, he gathered energy in his maw.
“Heat Breath!”
A searing energy sphere rocketed toward Kuro. The latter dodged sideways, the blast grazing past him to slam into an island below.
Boom!!!
The island exploded into oblivion. Entire chunks of land, along with its lion-headed constructs and surrounding blades, vaporized in an instant.
Kuro’s reconstructed continent now bore a gaping crater where its heart once pulsed.
The dragon spiraled midair, unleashing another salvo of Heat Breaths. One after another, the fiery projectiles homed in on Kuro.
Darting through the air, Kuro weaved between explosions, occasionally yanking islands skyward with his power, morphing them into lion heads to block Kaido’s assault. But the dragon merely rained more Heat Breaths, reducing each obstacle to ash.
Rumble!
The dark clouds above roared again, unleashing more thunder and a cyclone of howling wind that slammed into Kuro, slowing his flight.
Then came more energy blasts from behind.
Kuro twisted, slicing at the nearest sphere. The collision sent him plummeting earthward, his body crashing into the ground with a deafening thud.
He skidded backward, resisting the energy’s force as it carved a smoky, straight trench into the earth.
After sliding nearly a hundred meters, he finally swung his blade upward, deflecting the blast into the clouds.
KA-Boom!
The dark clouds erupted with thunder, and rain began to pour, mingling with the shrieking winds. The sky darkened further as streaks of lightning illuminated the Azure Dragon’s terrifying form.
“So this is how he plays his ability?” Kuro gritted his teeth, eyeing Kaido.
A dragon—master of storms.
There’d be no escaping this.
“Bwok-bwok-bwok!”
The Transponder Snail in his pocket buzzed insistently.
No choice but to answer. Without backup, he’d die here.
Kuro yanked out the snail. “Hello, Kuro! Where are you?” Lucius Kro’s voice crackled through.
Kuro glanced at Kaido, took a deep breath, and bellowed, “Gramps, Help Me!”
“Oh~ Sounds like a fierce battle! Did you run into Whitebeard? So scary!” Lucius Kro’s voice dripped with mock surprise.
How did Gramps know he faced Whitebeard?
But Kuro shoved the thought aside. No time for questions now.
“It’s not Whitebeard—it’s Kaido! I’m in the sky, somewhere in the sky, I don’t know where! Just get here and save me! If you’re late, you’ll only be collecting my corpse!”
The snail crackled in silence before Lucius Kro replied, “Old man’s hurrying, but it’ll take at least a day to find you.”
Whoosh!
Another Heat Breath streaked toward him.
Kuro gripped his blade. A slash of golden and black Haki erupted from his sword, intercepting the attack.
Boom!!!
The collision detonated a shockwave, scattering smoke and dust, whipping Kuro’s hair.
“A day’s fine! I’ll hold on a day!”
He snapped the snail shut, locking eyes with the Azure Dragon emerging from the haze. Kaido had resumed his human form, glaring furiously.
Kuro sheathed Autumn Water, assuming an Iaijutsu stance, his gaze unblinking.
“Time to fight harder.”
This wasn’t like Shanks—old, weakened, his peak long past, though that final strike had hinted at his former glory.
But Kaido? This was the real apex.
No running. Kaido would hunt him to the ends of the earth without hesitation.
Only one option—drive him back.
“Brat! Come kill me!” Kaido roared, fists raised.
Kuro lowered his center of gravity, Haki Encasement surging outward. With a flash, he drew his blade.
“Lion!”
A Hundred Slashes!
Hundreds of Haki-imbued blades erupted toward Kaido, their light piercing the gloom.
Kaido’s eyes flared. He clenched his fists, standing his ground. The first slash neared—
Crash!
His fist shattered it instantly.
“Gaaaahhhhh!!!”
His arms blurred into afterimages, each punch obliterating incoming slashes. One by one, the hundreds of attacks crumbled before his fists.
As the final slash shattered, Kaido stomped, vanishing in a burst of smoke and dust.
He reappeared before Kuro’s face!
His massive fist—nearly Kuro’s height—swung upward in a brutal uppercut.
Crack!!!
Autumn Water blocked the blow, but Kuro gritted his teeth as his body recoiled, launched skyward by the sheer force.
Kaido roared, his head morphing into the dragon’s maw again. He unleashed another barrage of Heat Breaths.
Kuro twisted midair, dodging two blasts, then slashed downward to intercept the third, igniting another dust cloud.
Boom!
Kaido’s knees bent, then he launched upward like a spring, rocketing toward Kuro.
Meanwhile, Kuro swiped his blade with two fingers, golden Haki flaring.
“Shinmeiryu Style: Mystic Art!”
He gripped the sword with both hands, raising it high, then cleaved downward.
“Azure Dragon!!!”
