Chapter 156: Diglett Comes to Help
Chapter 156: Diglett Comes to Help
Naoki took the letter from Pidgeot's claws.
The pristine paper was adorned with colorful drawings in crayon.
A Pokemon with two large pincers, a vast blue ocean, a lighthouse by the shore, an orange Dragonite, and a moon hanging in the sky.
At the bottom were two small, adorable paw prints.
"Hmm?" Naoki pondered, looking at the peculiar Pokemon in the drawing. "Could it be a Krabby?"
The Krabby with its large pincers by the seaside and the moon in the sky might be a scene that Mew and Teddiursa found beautiful, so they wanted to share it with him through their artwork.
As for the orange Dragonite...
Naoki didn't think much of it, assuming that Teddiursa and Mew had encountered a wild Dragonite during their adventures.
After admiring the drawing, Naoki carefully kept the letter and called out to Pidgeot, who was about to fly away, asking Motoxizard to bring out a box of Pokeblock as a gift.
The usually expressionless Pidgeot, simply there to fulfill a request, immediately lit up with joy upon smelling the Pokeblock.
"Pidge!"
Seeing its reaction, Naoki smiled and asked, "By the way, Pidgeot, can you still find Mew and Teddiursa?"
He mainly wanted to send them some food.
At his question, Pidgeot thought carefully and seemed hesitant. It let out a call, indicating that it wasn't sure either.
The Adventuring Knights tended to move around frequently.
If they had left the familiar forest, Pidgeot wouldn't be able to locate them.
Understanding Pidgeot's dilemma, Naoki nodded and added, "Well, I'd like to ask you for another favor, and these treats will be your payment. How does that sound?"
"Pidge!" Pidgeot nodded eagerly.
"Then wait here for a moment."
Naoki turned and went back into the house. He rummaged through a cabinet and pulled out a woven basket, then fetched a variety of snacks from the refrigerator—soft and sweet honey buns, chewy honey candies, and honey lemonade in a baby bottle.
Naoki filled the basket with these treats, closed the lid, and carried it back outside.
"If you can find Teddiursa and Mew, I'd like you to deliver these treats to them. If you can't find them, feel free to keep the food for yourself."
Pidgeot cocked its head, eyeing the woven basket, then nodded.
The next second, it spread its wings, skillfully took the basket from Naoki, and soared into the sky, clutching the basket in its claws.
Naoki watched the direction of Pidgeot's departure with a sense of wonder.
Pidgey, Spearow, and now Pidgeot...
He had to admit that Mew and Teddiursa were incredibly adept at making friends!
He wondered what other Pokemon they would befriend next.
"Maybe I should buy a camera and ask one of them to deliver it to Mew and Teddiursa," Naoki thought. "That way, they can send photos back and forth instead of just drawings."
He made a mental note to buy a camera the next time he went into town for supplies, just in case.
Just then, Claire arrived at the ranch with her equipment.
Naoki quickly greeted her and led her to the salt house for an onsite inspection.
The floor of the salt house had been dug up by Diglett, revealing a large pit underneath.
"Is this Diglett your newly captured Pokemon?" Claire asked, her gaze shifting to the corner where Diglett was resting.
Naoki shook his head. "Not exactly. It destroyed my farm, so now it's working here to repay the debt."
Claire nodded in understanding. "I see. I thought it was like Dragonite, hired to help out on the ranch."
Many farmers collaborated with Diglett since the soil they tilled was ideal for crop growth.
Claire didn't press the issue further. She inspected the large hole beneath them and then took out a Poke Ball.
A flash of white light later, a Pokemon appeared before Naoki. It resembled a snake with three segments of its yellow body, a blue abdomen, and a pair of small wings on each segment.
Naoki was taken aback when he saw its form clearly.
Noticing his reaction, Claire smiled and explained, "This is a Dugtrio, Dugtrio's evolution. It can use its hard tail to burrow underground and stabilize its nest with the Rock-type move, Ancient Power, preventing any collapses. We'll need its help when it's time to build your cellar."
"I'm counting on you," Claire said to the Dugtrio.
The Dugtrio, with its gentle temperament, nodded slightly and then dove headfirst into the large hole.
Immediately, dirt and dust flew as the underground soil and rocks were effortlessly turned into powder by its efforts.
Diglett, standing by, was left stunned, its mouth agape.
Wow... so powerful!
But then, it dawned on Diglett that it might not be able to continue working here.
Because its services were no longer needed.
The thought of never again tasting the delicious food made by Naoki left a forlorn expression on Diglett's face.
Naoki, however, didn't notice Diglett's reaction. He was engaged in conversation with Claire about the size of the nest.
Claire asked, "How big of a nest do you want to build? Dugtrio is excellent at nest-building. In the wild, Dugtrio nests can reach up to ten kilometers in size—they're massive."
Naoki thought carefully before responding, "Big enough for five Saltrox would be fine."
"Five Saltrox..." Claire calculated their sizes in her head. "I understand. This construction project will likely be completed by tomorrow. Dugtrio will stay here tonight, and I'll come to pick it up in the morning."
"No problem, I'll take good care of Dugtrio," Naoki assured her.
Claire smiled faintly. "Then I'll leave it in your care."
She called Dugtrio over and gave it some instructions before turning to leave.
Naoki saw her off the ranch and, upon returning to the salt house, suddenly realized that Diglett had disappeared without a trace.
He looked around, perplexed.
"Diglett?"
He called out, but there was no response.
"Did that guy run away...?"
Naoki was at a loss for words. He searched the area but still couldn't find Diglett, eventually resigning himself to the idea that they weren't meant to be.
Night was falling.
Naoki found the four Salrox and Salrox Bao and informed them about the ongoing construction at the salt house, asking them to return to their Poke Balls for the night.
The Pokemon had no objections, so after dinner and some playtime outside, Naoki recalled them into their Poke Balls.
The wind picked up outside as the night grew deeper, leaving Naoki feeling a bit uneasy.
Before going to bed, he checked the ranch's facilities one more time and brought a late-night snack to the hardworking Dugtrio, asking it to take a break and eat before resuming its work.
Only after ensuring everything was in order did Naoki finally feel at peace and return to his house, cuddling up with his fluffy Bulbasaur as he drifted off to sleep.
