Chapter 155: The Death God's Treasury, the Arrival of Thanatos
Chapter 155: The Death God's Treasury, the Arrival of Thanatos
Qin Muye climbed out of the tree hole, and the witch was startled.
They had agreed that the witch would pull him up, but Qin Muye managed to climb out on his own, which naturally scared her.
"Handsome and young President Wang, did you find the old tinderbox I asked for?" the witch quickly asked.
"There was a bit of an incident. The dog wanted to recognize me as its big brother, but I didn’t want that. I don’t want people calling me 'Big Brother Dog' in the future, so I came out to get some fresh air," Qin Muye glanced at his white horse, which was still there. He had been worried that if he lost his horse, his princely demeanor would be gone. Pah, he thought, it’s not a princely demeanor, it’s just a princely air.
The witch was utterly confused by Qin Muye’s nonsensical words and couldn’t quite understand what he meant.
Did he find it or not?
If he didn’t find it, he wouldn’t have come out, he should have stayed inside and been eaten by the dog. But if he did find it, what was the situation?
"Hehe, please, President Wang, give me the old tinderbox. I don’t want any of the gold coins down there," the old witch cackled in her harsh voice.
"Alright, I’ll go down again to get it for you, but..." Qin Muye sized up the old witch, and her hairs stood on end under his gaze.
Is this a lunatic?
"I have some questions. For instance, who built the corridor down there? Why does the currency in the treasure chest have the Death God’s emblem? And what’s the deal with those three dogs?" Qin Muye spoke slowly.
This old witch was only a 2nd-rank practitioner, and Qin Muye had used his Intermediate Reconnaissance to check her. Her attributes were average, and she was likely a common practitioner, far inferior to him.
A single Magic Arrow could kill her instantly.
He might be physically weak, but that didn’t mean his magic was. He lacked strength, but he had plenty of magic power. With the intelligent magic network in his body, even without the assistance of Lords' Era, his spellcasting was almost instantaneous, and he could even enhance the power of his Magic Arrow by controlling the amount of magic power he input.
A glint of sharpness flashed in the old witch’s cloudy eyes. "You really did get the old tinderbox, didn’t you?"
"But you’re just an ordinary prince. Let me... explain it to you, handsome President Wang."
The old witch had intended to attack, but she suddenly noticed the layers of crimson light emanating from Qin Muye, tinged with a terrifying power. If she made a move, she would likely die on the spot.
"Look, I respect the elderly and the young. If you don’t tell me, I won’t do anything to you," Qin Muye retracted the crimson prison elements that had been seeping from his body and continued, "As the saying goes, having an elder in the family is like having a treasure. If you don’t tell me, I won’t harm you, but I’ll make sure you understand what a 'heart treasure' is!"
A 'heart treasure' referred to embracing someone’s heart and head. Whether it meant stuffing the head into the heart or the heart into the head didn’t matter; as long as they were embraced together, it was fine.
Hearing Qin Muye’s gentle words, the old witch’s heart skipped a beat. She felt that 'heart treasure' was definitely not a good term.
"Handsome President Wang, if you could, could you give the old tinderbox to this poor old woman first? I’m just a poor old woman who lost her tinderbox. If you give it to me, I’ll tell you everything I know," the witch pleaded with a grim face, hoping that Qin Muye didn’t know the true power of the old tinderbox.
Qin Muye took out the tinderbox and wiped it with a sly smile. Sparks emerged from the tinderbox, and the Copper Coin Dog was summoned from the void. The witch’s expression changed when she saw this.
"Speak," Qin Muye said casually, leaning against the Copper Coin Dog.
Seeing this, the old witch finally gave up her resistance.
"This is a treasury of the Death God Thanatos. Thanatos, the offspring of Typhon and Echidna, created three magical beings using the bloodline of Cerberus, the hellhound, and the power of wealth. He used the tinderbox to control these three Treasure Dogs to prevent them from running wild."
Qin Muye was silent. This is like fetching chestnuts from the fire, isn’t it? The witch’s goal was clearly to get the three dogs. But to dare take the Death God’s dogs, and even more absurdly, why would the Death God’s treasure be hidden so poorly that anyone could take it?
Qin Muye wasn't quite familiar with Thanatos and Echidna, but he did remember Typhon and Cerberus. One was the Greek storm Titan, whose mother was the Earth Mother Gaia, and the other was the famous three-headed hellhound.
‘Whether it’s the horrifying universe or fairy tales, they all seem to have a deep connection with my previous life?’
Qin Muye also noticed that the story of the tinderbox was no exception.
Mixed with Greek mythology, Qin Muye guessed that the soldier couldn't be one of Zeus's children, otherwise, how could he have so many special abilities?
Otherwise, how could he take the Death God's gold coins and the three dogs without any punishment and still become a king?
"Since these are the dogs the Death God uses to guard his treasury, why did you dare to take them?" Qin Muye countered, finding the old witch quite bold.
The old witch cackled, "The Death God only seeks out those who are about to die to claim their souls. There are so many deaths in the world; he doesn't have the time to come after me."
Qin Muye's expression darkened: ‘No, I think he does have the time!’ This thought was immediately chilling.
It was only because he was here; if it were according to the original story, the old witch would have been on her deathbed.
So when she was deceiving the soldier, the Death God might have been watching her from somewhere.
Qin Muye surveyed the surroundings, his expression dark as he dismissed the Copper Coin Dog.
"Good luck!" Qin Muye muttered and mounted his white horse, preparing to leave.
His pupils were coated with a layer of crimson crystals, and he saw a blurry figure standing under the tree, wearing a black robe with an indistinct face and holding a massive scythe.
The old witch couldn't help but feel a bit curious, why wish her good luck?
Soon, she realized.
Death God!!!
In her pupils, a clear figure appeared, holding a scythe and walking towards her step by step.
The next second, she lost all signs of life and fell straight to the ground.
Death God Thanatos watched Qin Muye ride away, but ultimately did not pursue him. The other's fate was not to die.
Or perhaps he couldn't take the other's soul; he could sense that the other had the aura of the Underworld, and more importantly, this aura seemed to be from the King of the Underworld.
This made him hesitate.
As for the gold, silver, and copper dogs, it didn't matter if the other used them for a while. To him, a mortal's life was but a moment; he could always retrieve them when he collected the other's soul.
Qin Muye was nearly sick from the jostling of his white horse. He dismounted only after the black figure stopped following him.
‘Definitely 7th rank or higher.’ Qin Muye's Reconnaissance spell couldn't even detect the other's name, proving the vast gap in their strength.
"Bad luck."
Not being the protagonist but taking what shouldn't be taken, he was now being watched. However, since the other didn't follow, he considered himself temporarily safe.
It made sense; the other probably didn't care much about such trifles.
This thought only confirmed that the soldier had an extraordinary background. Otherwise, how could he have escaped punishment and married a princess, achieving the peak of his life?
‘Either a child of Hades or Zeus; even Poseidon wouldn't have the clout to make the Death God Thanatos show respect.’
Hades was the King of the Underworld, and Zeus was the King of the Gods.
Poseidon and Thanatos had no significant connection.
‘In that moment of tension, I vaguely recalled that Thanatos and his brother, the God of Sleep, were sons of the Night Goddess. Their origins were also extraordinary.’
‘This world is too much of a pit. To encounter such a situation right from the start.’
Qin Muye felt terrible. It seemed that "The Little Mermaid" might have a connection to Poseidon, and "Jack and the Beanstalk" to the Titans.
Other fairy tales likely had some connections as well; who knew, perhaps Snow White's father was Zeus.
It wasn't impossible, given that Typhon had appeared.
‘Wait, could I extract the bloodline of the Titans from the gold, silver, and copper dogs?’ Qin Muye suddenly realized this blind spot.
However, upon further thought, the Titan bloodline in Greek mythology wasn't that rare. Not only humans but even monsters could have it; it was just that finding a pureblood might be difficult.
