Chapter 154: Long Time No See, Naruto, Sakura
Chapter 154: Long Time No See, Naruto, Sakura
After a quick scan of the area, Yamato furrowed his brows, indicating that something was amiss. "There's no one here," he stated, finding it unusual for a ninja village that dealt in information trade to have no guards posted at its outskirts.
"It's quiet inside the village as well," Haku added, squinting as he carefully surveyed their surroundings.
Had the people of Fanggong Village already evacuated? Had their mission been compromised? Both Yamato and Haku couldn't help but consider this possibility.
Despite their concerns, they had to press on. Yamato signaled, and the group stealthily made their way into the heart of Fanggong Village.
Click.
The soft sound of a lock being picked broke the silence.
As the massive lock on the door fell away, Naruto and Sakura swiftly entered, scanning the interior from left to right. Finding nothing of note, they returned to the entrance just in time to see Captain Yamato, Sai, Haku, and the others emerge from their respective searches, exchanging silent glances before resuming their quiet investigation of the village.
One by one, the huge locks were undone, and the doors to hidden chambers were pushed open, yet they still found no useful clues. Everything was too clean, too neat.
"Sasuke..." Naruto clenched his fists, his voice filled with determination as he sped up his search through Fanggong Village, desperate to find his long-lost comrade. Sakura, sensing his urgency, quickened her pace as well.
Time flew by as they scoured most of the area. The Leaf ninjas and Haku's group eventually converged, having searched most of the village, and together they discovered a massive underground base. They quickly made their way inside, continuing their swift and thorough search through the densely packed rooms.
This place had once been Fanggong Village's intelligence storage center. Neatly arranged scrolls containing intelligence from various time periods adorned the shelves in each room, creating a rather impressive sight.
But now, the shelves were barren and empty. Occasionally, they would come across a stray scroll, only to find it blank.
"Nothing... nothing at all," Naruto muttered, his voice laced with disappointment as he pushed open door after door, his hopes diminishing with each empty corridor he traversed.
Just as he was about to give up, the group reached the final door of the underground base.
Brilliant sunlight streamed in from outside, causing them to squint after being in the darkness for so long. But in that moment, Naruto's eyes widened, and his face lit up with sheer joy.
"Sasuke!" he exclaimed, his eyes locked onto a figure bathed in sunlight—a figure that seemed to have grown taller and more mature. It was the person he had thought about day and night.
"Sasuke!!!' Naruto's emotions finally got the better of him, and he called out loudly.
"Sasuke?" Sakura whispered, her eyes widening in disbelief as tears welled up in her eyes.
Yamato, Sai, Haku, and the others' expressions turned serious, realizing they had finally caught up with their quarry.
"Sasuke, do you know these people?" asked Haori Kei, captain of the Fanggong Village security squad, as he turned to assess the newcomers. He had just finished some post-mission cleanup and was about to depart according to plan.
Sasuke turned, his gaze calm as it swept over Naruto and Sakura. Though it had been two years since they last saw each other, he recognized them instantly.
He nodded calmly. "They were my teammates back in the Leaf Village."
Upon hearing this, Uzumaki, dressed in ninja attire, scanned the group and quickly identified the most agitated members—Naruto and Sakura. After a brief glance at Sakura, he offered a slight smile and remarked, "It's clear that you two share a strong bond."
Of course, friendship was one thing, but Sasuke, with his new identity, would not hesitate to act if needed, even against his old teammates.
"Sasuke."
Hearing Sasuke's words, Naruto was overcome with emotion, with many long-repressed words on the tip of his tongue. But when it came to speaking them, he found himself at a loss.
"Do you need to say hello before you go?"
At this moment, the usually aggressive Itachi of the Uchiha, the only one from the Lock Front Village who had remained silent, spoke up. Having settled down after marriage and starting a family, his demeanor was now much calmer, allowing him to speak with such composure.
As for the dangers that lay ahead, well, Uchiha pride remained unwavering.
As the cleanup squad for the village, he, Sasuke, and Izumi, all possessing the Three Tomoe Sharingan, along with their captain, Yuiyi Qing, an elite among the jonin, had nothing to fear from this group that had just arrived.
There was no way they would be stopped.
This was why Itachi and the rest of the squad could afford to be so fearless and even have the leisure to tease Sasuke.
In response to Itachi's question, Sasuke casually nodded, his gaze first sweeping over the unfamiliar ninja, including Kurotsuchi.
"Iwa ninja."
He could guess the reason for their presence, as it was he who had captured the Iwa ninja used as a sacrifice for Yuiyi Xuan Yue's Impure World Reincarnation Technique.
Paying no further attention to Kurotsuchi and her companions, Sasuke turned to Naruto, Sakura, and the two unfamiliar Konoha ninja, addressing them with a calm tone:
"Long time no see, Naruto, Sakura."
"Where's Kakashi? Didn't he come with you?"
Sasuke suspected that Kakashi, known for his penchant for striking from the shadows, might be lurking nearby.
Yamato stepped forward and replied, "Captain Kakashi isn't here. I'm leading this mission in his stead. From now on, Team Kakashi will be escorting you back to Konoha, Sasuke."
The investigation into the Lock Front Village had failed.
For Yamato, the best course of action now was to bring back Uchiha Sasuke.
The villagers must have had some information about the Lock Front Village.
Additionally, not just Sasuke, but his companions as well.
Yamato's expression turned stern as he glanced at Izumi and the other two Uchiha.
While they didn't pose an immediate threat, he couldn't shake the feeling of danger they emanated.
Fortunately, with the Iwa ninja on their side, they had the advantage in numbers.
Just then, Kurotsuchi spoke up, "Uchiha Sasuke, right? I want to ask you about something. Where's the Iwa ninja, Ishikawa, who was here a week ago?"
Sasuke turned his head, "Ishikawa? If you're talking about that big guy who's good with Earth Release, he's no longer around."
"What do you mean he's not around?"
"I killed him, of course."
Crack!
Kurotsuchi clenched her fists, her eyes turning cold and sharp.
"A missing-nin daring to be so arrogant!"
"Earth Release: Raging Earth Spike!"
Having lost her patience, Kurotsuchi swiftly formed hand seals, causing bamboo shoot-like rocks to erupt from the ground, aiming to impale Sasuke and the rest of the Lock Front Village group.
Yamato and the others had no choice but to join the battle.
The fight had officially begun.
