Chapter 154: How About a Fur Coat?
Chapter 154: How About a Fur Coat?
When Rod and Elfman returned home with the two children, Hunter was already much better, aside from the scary-looking rips and bloodstains on his cotton coat.
Mrs. Weiss was now hugging her children, tears streaming down her face.
Rod had already given a concise summary of what had happened, and he was quite good at hitting the key points.
After he finished, the siblings took turns narrating their adventure on the mountain.
Jimmy emphasized how scared he was, how amazing and powerful the two big brothers were, and how much it hurt when he got injured. Hunter, on the other hand, described the pain he felt and the incredible "red magic" that healed him.
Mrs. Weiss was still shaken by the aftermath.
"Thank you, thank you so much. If anything else happened to them, I don't know what I would do."
"It was just something we did on the way to our mission, and it seems your daughter has already completed our task."
Rod was considering that he might not be able to accept the reward this time, "But please, have a doctor check them out first."
"Yes, I'll go right away!" Mrs. Weiss took a few steps but then turned back to hug her children again.
"Mom..." Jimmy remembered the stern words the big brother had said on the way back, "I was wrong. I shouldn't have gone to the mountain without permission."
Hunter echoed, "Me too."
"First and foremost, I'm just so relieved that you're both safe," Mrs. Weiss said gently. "I'm proud of your courage and your concern for your family."
The children's faces lit up, but then Mrs. Weiss released them, her expression turning serious.
"From now on, absolutely, absolutely no more dangerous stunts!"
"Understood!"
Whether the children really took it to heart was debatable, but Elfman certainly did.
Even as the doctor arrived, he was still muttering to himself, "Courage and concern for family..."
Rod let Elfman have his moment of reflection and went to check on Mr. Karut's condition.
The doctor examined the herbs Jimmy had brought back and immediately started preparing a potion, which he administered to Mr. Karut.
The potion didn't cure him instantly, but Mr. Karut quickly regained consciousness.
"Does a lung disease respond that quickly to a single dose of medicine?" Rod muttered to himself. He wasn't well-versed in medical knowledge, but perhaps the potions in this world were more potent.
Seeing Mr. Karut sit up and lean against the headboard, speaking in a weak voice, Rod could sense Mrs. Weiss's joy.
He also felt a sense of familiarity with Mr. Karut, as if he had seen him somewhere before.
"Are you... cough, cough... the Mage Lord, sir?"
Mr. Karut was visibly moved, and Mrs. Weiss quickly helped him catch his breath, "Yes, yes, it was this Mage Lord and his companions who saved Jimmy and Hunter."
"No, no... I mean, cough, cough, the Mage Lord who can turn into a wolf!"
"It's you!" Rod suddenly realized, "You're the carriage driver for that miserly merchant who valued money over life!"
The carriage driver was quite ordinary and unremarkable, but the merchant had left a deep impression on Rod, making him sympathetic toward the driver, which helped him remember.
Seeing that Rod recognized him, Mr. Karut smiled, not at all bothered by the descriptors Rod had used for his former employer.
That man was indeed a miserly, life-valuing merchant.
In fact, Mr. Karut suspected that his illness might be partly due to that man.
When Banya chose routes for his business, he only considered the distance, not the danger, often taking paths that others avoided.
He would always boast that it was his willingness to take these less-traveled routes that made him successful.
Mr. Karut sighed, "Once again, you've saved me."
"To be precise, it was the doctor and your family who saved you," Rod said sincerely. "You have an excellent wife and two wonderful children."
Karlter looked at his wife, gripping her hand with his rough, thin fingers. In that moment, he could feel the strain of her recent efforts through her fingertips. His mouth moved, forming the words "thank you."
Vies smiled and shook her head. She only wanted him to get better.
"Doctor, is there no problem with Mr. Karlter's condition?" Rod wanted to wrap things up quickly so he could head back.
"No, it's only stabilized for now. Because the illness was neglected for too long, he needs at least another dose of the medicine tomorrow."
Rod pressed on, "At least one dose? What about a full recovery?"
The doctor hesitated, "With proper rest, he can fully recover. If he can have another dose, it will speed up the process, but we don't have enough of the herbs."
Rod nodded, "That's not a problem. We can make another trip."
Vies, thinking about the blood on her son's clothes, couldn't help but say, "Mr. Rod, the Garantos Snow Mountain is too dangerous. Are you really going to go again?"
"Yes, yes, cough... I just need to rest..."
"This is part of our job, after all," Rod said. "Oh, and since Jimmy found most of the herbs, we don't need to worry about the payment."
He could handle the job Elfman could do, or he could just write a note to Mira if necessary.
"Mr. Rod..."
Rod waved and left the room, leaving a cool, confident figure behind.
"Elfman, are you ready to fight?"
"No problem," Elfman, now calm, asked, "What happened?"
"We don't have enough herbs. We need to make another trip."
"Alright, but are you sure you're okay?"
"We've rested long enough. We'll take it slow on the way, and by the time we reach the mountain, we should be fine," Rod said. "And this time, we'll try to avoid any battles."
Last time, if it weren't for finding the kids, Rod wouldn't have rushed up the mountain, plunging into a horde of beasts.
The mission was to find herbs, not to slay beasts.
The two of them put on their warm coats and set out again. They returned to the village before nightfall.
Without any of his own people causing trouble, Rod's plan was executed smoothly, and the efficiency was outstanding.
Not only did they bring back a large bag of herbs, but they also managed to catch two Rambans on their way back.
Rod thought they might have been suffering from heatstroke and planned to strip their hides to cool down, then take a hot bath or warm up by the fire.
"Elfman, what do you think about making a fur coat out of this?"
"Coat?" Elfman touched the Ramban's fur. "It feels pretty good. My sister would be happy if I gave it to her."
Rod nodded, "Yeah, I think so too."
"It's me who's giving it!" Elfman glared.
Rod quickly nodded, "Sure, sure, you give it. I'll keep mine for myself."
After all, they were both his kills, and he came up with the idea. So, you giving it away means he had a hand in it too.
And... hehehe.
Elfman couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
---
Rod hadn't expected the new name to be so poorly received...
But since he had already changed it, he would give it a couple of months to see how it goes. If it doesn't work out, he'd think of something else.
Thank you all for your concern. The book is doing well, and it should earn the premium badge around 400,000 words. No matter what the title is, it won't affect the story's style going forward.
And while I'm a new author, I'm not that new. I'm committed to finishing this book, so there's no need to worry about that.
