Chapter 152: Hagrid's Dragon Egg (Third Update)
Chapter 152: Hagrid's Dragon Egg (Third Update)
April 19, 1992, and the Easter holidays had arrived.
The Easter break is similar to the Christmas break, both lasting about two weeks.
However, unlike Christmas, students are generally not allowed to go home during Easter, and the break is far less relaxed.
With final exams just two months away, professors assign a lot of homework, and students use the time to review intensively.
Hogwarts' final exams are quite rigorous, and failing them can result in being held back a year.
Last year, a young wizard from Gryffindor failed to progress to second year due to poor grades, becoming a laughingstock throughout the school.
So during the Easter holidays, the busiest place in the school was undoubtedly the library.
Jerry, of course, had no such worries, but he spent most of his time in the library, not for revision but to search for more spellbooks on Flame Magic.
He was determined to improve his dragonfire spell, making it even more powerful.
His goal was to be able to summon ten dragons, a hundred dragons, a thousand dragons, even ten thousand dragons, with just a flick of his finger.
He wanted to transform the Rising Dragon of Mount Lu into the Hundred Dragons of Mount Lu!
How to Enlarge Flames with Magic by Cecil Hillbert.
Among the countless bookshelves, Jerry finally found another spellbook related to Flame Magic. He pulled it out happily, intending to take it to the reading area for a thorough study.
At that moment, a large figure in a mole-skin coat appeared not far from him.
"Hagrid, you're here to borrow books too?"
Jerry noticed Hagrid hurriedly hiding several books behind his back.
"Hey, Jerry, I'm just... just browsing!"
Hagrid's voice was clearly evasive.
"It looks like you've got a dragon egg!"
Although Hagrid moved quickly, Jerry's keen eyes caught a glimpse of the books in his hands: British and Irish Dragon Species, From Dragon Egg to Hell, and Guide to Raising Dragons.
Drawing from his memory of the movie, Jerry immediately realized that Hagrid must have already obtained the Norwegian Ridgeback dragon egg from Quirrell, who was disguised as a passerby.
However, he didn't immediately expose him. Instead, he smiled and said, "Hagrid, could you take me to see thestrals again sometime? I'm really interested in them!"
"Of course, I'm glad you like them!"
Hagrid's face lit up with joy at the mention of thestrals.
While he generally disliked Slytherins, Jerry was an exception. Jerry's personality and overall demeanor made him hard to dislike, and he was also very interested in fantastic beasts.
Every time Jerry visited Hagrid's hut with Harry and the others, they would discuss topics related to fantastic beasts.
Hagrid noticed that Jerry had a genuine understanding and appreciation for fantastic beasts, making him a true enthusiast.
Young wizards with such an interest in fantastic beasts were rare, which is why Hagrid had a particular fondness for Jerry.
Jerry nodded, chatted a bit more with Hagrid about thestrals, and then headed to the reading area with his spellbook.
Jerry, who had seen both Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, knew well that many of the magical creatures in the wizarding world possessed incredible magical abilities. If harnessed properly, they could be incredibly useful in the future.
So, while studying magic, Jerry also dedicated some time to learning about Fantastic Beasts from spellbooks. Whenever he visited Hagrid with Harry and the others, he would chat with the master of Fantastic Beasts about these creatures.
During one of these visits, at Jerry's request, Hagrid had even shown him a thestral and taught him how to feed it.
"Oh, Merlin, I can never remember all of this; it's just too hard!"
As Jerry approached the reading area, he heard Ron's agonized complaint.
Ron had thrown his quill aside and was staring longingly out the library window at the clear, blue sky, looking thoroughly defeated.
Meanwhile, Hermione was diligently marking her notes with different colors, meticulously planning her revision schedule.
Those who needed to work hard were unwilling to do so, while those who didn't need to were working even harder. Jerry shook his head as he observed the stark contrast between Ron and Hermione.
"Hagrid! What are you doing in the library?"
Ron, who was in no mood to study and was slouching in his seat, happened to see Hagrid finishing up with his books and leaving. He waved loudly to get his attention.
Hagrid, hearing Ron's call, reluctantly walked over with his books slung over his shoulder.
Seeing Hagrid, Harry, who had been diligently working on his homework, put down his quill and tried to extract some secrets about the Philosopher's Stone on the fourth floor from him.
Hagrid found it difficult to answer Harry's questions and could only sneakily suggest that they all come to his hut later for a more detailed chat.
So, an hour later, Jerry joined Harry, Ron, and Hermione at Hagrid's hut. Inside, they saw a black, scaly dragon egg by the fireplace.
Jerry was not at all interested in Harry's attempts to get information about the fourth floor. From the moment they entered the hut, his attention was fixed on the dragon egg.
In this world, dragons were indeed powerful. They had massive bodies, immense strength, the ability to fly and breathe fire, and their claws and teeth were deadly weapons. Some even possessed venom, and their tough scales provided excellent physical and magical resistance.
It was said that to subdue a dragon, at least ten Auror-level wizards would need to cast a Sleeping Charm simultaneously, and even then, it might not be enough. Alternatively, a specialized Blinding Curse could be used, but it would only cause temporary blindness and wouldn't render the dragon harmless. One misstep, and it could still incinerate you with a blast of fire.
For Jerry, having a powerful dragon as an ally in battle would be an incredible asset.
However, dragons had a significant drawback: their intelligence was relatively low, even among Fantastic Beasts, often lower than that of ordinary animals. This made them difficult to train and nearly impossible to ride.
Moreover, they were highly aggressive. Even if you raised one from birth, there was always a risk of it turning on you. Many wizards who studied and raised dragons had scars from their encounters.
For example, Ron's brother Charlie Weasley.
Despite these challenges, Jerry still wanted a dragon. He believed that if he could get a dragon to obey him to some degree, it could be a valuable asset during the Avengers One battle.
Furthermore, there might be spells in other Mini Worlds that could help control dragons.
