Chapter 152: An Unexpected Surprise (4k)
Chapter 152: An Unexpected Surprise (4k)
"Obito, what did you do yesterday after you left?" Mu Yue asked, looking at the progress Obito had made with the Fire Style: Fire Breathing Technique on his data tablet.
"Not much, just went out to play with Rin." Obito replied.
"Just the two of you?" Mu Yue sensed that Obito might be holding something back.
"There was also this annoying guy with us." Obito answered honestly, though he felt that Mu Yue and Kakashi weren't exactly close, so he didn't mention Kakashi's name.
Hearing this, Mu Yue knew exactly who it was—it had to be Kakashi.
She gave Kakashi a mental thumbs-up. Not only had he helped trigger Obito's training mission, but he had also stimulated Obito's strength, and he wasn't even officially teammates with Obito yet. Truly, he was already showing his worth as a future teammate.
"Today, you don't need to do any other practice. Just familiarize yourself more with the Fire Breathing Technique. You've already completed the introductory stage of breath training." Mu Yue said with a smile.
"Huh? I've learned it?" Obito scratched his head. He had been so engrossed in his battle of wits with Kakashi yesterday that he hadn't even realized he had completely mastered the breathing technique.
"Yes, you've learned it. You're the first one to master the breathing technique." Mu Yue praised.
"Haha, is that so? Shisui and the others should be close behind, then." Obito's face lit up with a bright smile.
"The first..." Shisui, who was still practicing the breathing technique, felt a twinge of dissatisfaction. Despite his diligent training, he was still a step behind Obito.
Mu Yue used her appraisal ability to check on Shisui and saw that his proficiency had reached ninety points; he was very close.
Her disciples' progress in cultivating the breathing techniques was much faster than she had anticipated. Even though Shisui was slightly slower than Obito, Mu Yue felt that he would be able to complete the training by the end of this semester.
As for Might Guy, Mu Yue wasn't sure. His proficiency was currently at seventy points.
However, Obito and the others had only started to make rapid progress after they began combat training. If Guy could also make remarkable strides in combat training, he might be able to catch up with Shisui and Obito.
"Next, Shisui, you and Guy will have a sparring match." Mu Yue said after some thought.
Guy had recently completed all the basic training, and Mu Yue had assigned Obito to be his opponent, as she felt that their similar strengths would allow them to hone each other's skills mutually.
But now, she felt that to truly master the breathing technique, they needed to fight stronger enemies and face greater pressure.
"Hey, what about me?" Obito pointed to himself and asked, eager to try out his newly learned Fire Breathing Technique on Guy and experience the feeling of an undefeated streak like Shisui.
"Go familiarize yourself with the Fire Breathing Technique." Mu Yue tapped Obito's head and said.
Although Guy had just started his training, considering the difference between the Fire Breathing Technique and the Rock Breathing Technique, Mu Yue decided to move directly to the third stage. This meant that Shisui could use all his abilities except the Sharingan, and Guy could also go all out.
After all, the Rock Breathing Technique purely enhanced physical strength, and Guy didn't know any ninjutsu. If they maintained the same rules as before, it would simply restrict Shisui's strength.
"Shisui, please take care of me!" Guy gave Shisui a thumbs-up, his fighting spirit brimming.
Shisui was Mu Yue's youngest disciple, but he was also the strongest. In Guy's eyes, Shisui was an undisputed genius, and he loved nothing more than challenging geniuses.
"Please go easy on me." Shisui nodded in reply.
"Begin!" Mu Yue announced.
As soon as Mu Yue's voice fell, Guy immediately changed the rhythm of his breathing technique and charged forward, kicking out with his signature move.
"Konoha Senpuu!"
His incredibly fast spinning leg flew towards Shisui.
Since the summer training camp, Shisui hadn't sparred with Guy, so he wasn't clear about Guy's exact strength. Therefore, he chose to start with a probing attack and also used the Konoha Senpuu kick.
The powerful force caused both of them to retreat several steps, with Shisui taking the brunt of it.
"What strong strength." Shisui was a little surprised.
At this moment, the power Guy was displaying was even greater than Obito's after he entered the full concentration breathing state.
"I can't compete with Guy in taijutsu head-on." Shisui thought to himself.
Without even using the full concentration breathing technique, Guy was already displaying such terrifying strength. Shisui could imagine how much of a boost the Rock Breathing Technique gave to physical defense. Sparring with Guy in taijutsu would be unwise, as it would be playing to Guy's strengths and ignoring his own.
Boom!
Sensing danger, Shisui used the Body Flicker Technique to leave his original spot. In the next moment, the tree where he had been standing was kicked and shattered by Guy.
Guy's display of taijutsu strength didn't fluster Shisui. This level of strength was not enough to make him lose in front of Mu Yue.
"Katon: Goukakyuu no Jutsu!" Shisui quickly formed the hand seals and spat out a huge fireball towards Guy. At the same time, he used shuriken to predict Guy's evasive movements and finally used the Instantaneous Movement Technique to teleport to an area that Guy couldn't block.
Guy hadn't expected Shisui to think of so many things in the time it took to perform a ninjutsu. When he dodged Shisui's attack, Shisui sent a fireball palm strike towards him.
"Rock Breathing Technique, full concentration breathing!" With no way to dodge, Guy had no choice but to use full concentration breathing to strengthen his body.
The Rock Breathing Technique provided a huge boost to physical abilities, including defensive strength.
If Mu Yue had her Sharingan active, Shisui's small fireball wouldn't have been able to break through her defense. But Guy was still in the introductory stage of the breathing technique, so he could only reduce the damage he took. The high temperature of the flames still made Guy uncomfortable.
With his physical abilities enhanced once more, Guy directly released his chakra and kicked towards Shisui.
Shisui had also considered that the Rock Breathing Technique's full concentration breathing would greatly enhance Guy's body, so he didn't have any thoughts of pressing his advantage. After sending out the fireball palm strike, he immediately used the Instantaneous Movement Technique to leave, causing Guy's attack to miss again.
"As expected, he's strong." Shisui thought as he looked at the small pit that Guy's kick had created in the ground.
The rest of the battle made Guy feel extremely frustrated. Apart from the beginning, he hadn't even touched Shisui once.
"Got you!" Just as Guy was using all his might and on the verge of using full concentration breathing for the second time to stop Shisui, his leg suddenly passed through Shisui's body.
"Illusion?" Guy froze.
In that instant, a kunai with a flame passed by Guy's side.
"It's over." Shisui said. He could have easily attacked Guy while he was caught in the genjutsu, but he didn't because they weren't enemies.
"This was truly a battle full of youth!" Guy admitted his defeat and laughed, giving Shisui a thumbs-up.
"Shisui has no rivals among his peers now. Even Kakashi, who is two years older, wouldn't be his match.
Mu Yue felt that Tobirama was slowly being groomed into a boss-level character. In the original story, it was unlikely that Tobirama would possess such strength at his age.
With the early activation of the Sharingan, his spiritual power surged, and his training in the breathing technique further honed his physique. From here on out, Tobirama's growth would become increasingly exaggerated.
"You all did very well. Take a short break before continuing your training." Mu Yue said gently with a smile.
After letting her disciples rest, Mu Yue began to ponder how she could raise Might Guy's trust level during his birthday celebration.
It was already December 10th, and there were only 21 days left until Guy's birthday.
Based on her observations of her students' expressions and actions, Mu Yue was confident that helping Tobirama celebrate his birthday would also increase the trust levels of the other disciples. Therefore, she expected Guy's trust level to be significantly higher than it was before his birthday.
However, she wasn't sure of the extent of this increase, as trust levels couldn't be appraised or seen; she could only make guesses based on their behavior.
To be safe, Mu Yue wanted to do her best and boost Guy's mood as much as possible, aiming to break through to Trust Level 4 in one go.
Guy's case was a bit more challenging. Unlike Tobirama, who had become an orphan at a young age, Guy had a good relationship with his father and didn't lack paternal love.
Sending him ninja tools as a gift wouldn't be very meaningful, especially since Tobirama had just given him a present, and sending another one from the second disciple might seem perfunctory.
Mu Yue had been brainstorming ideas for a long time, but she still couldn't come up with a great plan for Guy.
"Maybe I can start with Guy's father," Mu Yue suddenly thought, feeling that her previous ideas had been too narrow-minded.
Improving the trust levels of her disciples didn't necessarily require her to focus solely on the disciples themselves; she could also explore other avenues.
With over half a month left, Mu Yue wasn't in a hurry to finalize her plan just yet.
In the afternoon, since it was Sunday, Mu Yue went to Asuma's home for tutoring.
"Teacher Mu Yue, how's your progress with Wind Release?" Asuma asked curiously during their break.
"Although I haven't become the Wind Release genius you expected, I don't think I'm doing too badly," Mu Yue replied with a smile.
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!" Mu Yue quickly formed the necessary hand seals and unleashed a gust of wind toward a large tree.
Whoosh! !
The tree bent under the force of the wind, its leaves rustling wildly, but it didn't break.
"It's still far inferior to my Fire and Water Release." Looking at the slightly bent tree, Mu Yue sighed.
To maintain her persona, Mu Yue had prepared extensively, borrowing many books on Wind Release from the library and even seeking advice from Minato. She presented herself as a Wind Release beginner.
"You're already very strong, Teacher Mu Yue. You've only been learning for a little over a month," Asuma said, feeling more hopeful about his own Wind Release.
"You also need to work hard on your Fire Release. Don't let me finish learning Wind Release before you've fully mastered the training content," Mu Yue said, ruffling Asuma's hair playfully.
"I definitely won't disappoint you. I feel like my Fire Release has gotten much stronger recently," Asuma assured her.
After sending Asuma home, Mu Yue returned to the classroom and spotted Hiruzen Sarutobi smoking.
"Third Hokage," Mu Yue greeted him.
"Training's over? Good work," Hiruzen acknowledged with a smile and a nod.
As Mu Yue was about to leave, Hiruzen called out to her, having remembered something.
"Mu Yue, have you decided on the candidate for the internship program?" Hiruzen inquired. Not long ago, he had approved Mu Yue's revised internship program and appointed her as the person in charge.
"Yes, it's done. The groupings and mentor teachers have been determined," Mu Yue replied affirmatively. With only ten days left before the ninja school's winter break, she certainly wasn't going to procrastinate.
"The list should include Might Guy and Uchiha Obito, right?" Hiruzen continued.
"Yes, they were the top two in the fourth-grade exam last time," Mu Yue confirmed.
"Then I'll trouble you with this, Mu Yue. Modify the list by removing one person or adding two more. There's a graduate ninja on my end whom I'd like you to help instruct. Put him in the same group as Guy and Obito, and you'll be their mentor teacher," Hiruzen explained his arrangement.
Looking at Mu Yue, Hiruzen recalled Kakashi, who currently had no team to join.
Hiruzen didn't want Kakashi to continue wallowing in his depression. Obito and Guy were among the few people Kakashi still cared about, and Hiruzen believed that Mu Yue was an exceptional teacher with strong mentoring capabilities.
With a month of winter break and a three-month internship in the third semester, totaling four months, Hiruzen didn't expect Kakashi to completely emerge from his shadow during this time. However, he hoped to see some improvement in his current state.
"Is it appropriate for a graduate to participate in the internship?" Mu Yue asked, getting a general idea of who this person might be from Hiruzen's words.
The opportunity to become Kakashi's mentor teacher was an unexpected bonus, but Mu Yue decided to play it up a bit.
"Common sense would say it's inappropriate, but we're left with no other choice," Hiruzen sighed and proceeded to tell Mu Yue about Kakashi's past.
From being a super genius who rapidly graduated and became a jonin, he had fallen to the point where he couldn't even find a mentor teacher.
"So, he's White Fang's child?" Mu Yue feigned surprise and regret, as if she were worried about Kakashi.
"Third Hokage, rest assured. I'll take care of Kakashi. I'll do my best to help him overcome his shadow and reclaim his life," Mu Yue said earnestly.
"White Fang was a ninja I deeply respected. I must not let his child continue living in darkness," Mu Yue added.
"With those words, I'm relieved," Hiruzen said, beaming at Mu Yue.
It was an unexpected bonus that Mu Yue happened to be a fan of the White Fang.
After returning, Mu Yue modified the internship plan. She had originally planned to group Rin, Obito, and Guy together, but since the Third Hokage wanted to include Kakashi, she decided to remove Rin from the internship plan.
Following middle-level ninja teachers around wouldn't be as beneficial as learning from her shadow clones for four months.
