Chapter 151: The Role of Parents
Chapter 151: The Role of Parents
Naoki had no choice but to get up and answer the call.
As the video call connected, Dr. Olin's spirited face appeared on the screen.
The sight of her instantly energized Naoki.
"Dr. Olin?" he asked.
With a smile, Dr. Olin replied, "Long time no see, Naoki. How have you been lately?"
Thinking about the events of the past few days, Naoki smiled and nodded. "Everything's fine."
Knowing the purpose of Dr. Olin's call, he shouted out to the room.
Soon, Goulet's crimson figure appeared in the room.
"Want to say hello to the doctor?" Naoki asked, looking at Goulet.
Goulet turned to the person on the screen and happily exclaimed, "Agasi~"
Dr. Olin looked at the person and Pokemon in front of her, their faces close to the screen, and smiled.
"You two seem to have grown even closer," she observed.
"In fact, Goulet has always been very well-behaved," Naoki said, glancing at Goulet.
"That's quite surprising," Dr. Olin mused. "Maybe your Goulet is special."
She recalled the events of the past period.
To verify whether Goulet and Miltank could get along with humans, she and her husband, Dr. Fort, began trying to get their son, Papa, to interact with them.
However, the results of these interactions were not ideal.
Why was that?
Dr. Olin fell into deep thought once more.
Staring at Dr. Olin on the screen, Naoki once again thought about her future with Dr. Fort and the tragic fate that awaited Papa.
After a moment's consideration, he decided to intervene.
"Doctor, have you encountered any bottlenecks in your experiment?" Naoki inquired.
Dr. Olin was taken aback that he would ask about this proactively. After a moment's thought, she shared that Papa's interactions with Miltank and Goulet had not been going well.
"I don't understand..." she began, "After being captured by a human's Poke Ball, while Goulet and Miltank no longer attack humans, they still maintain their wariness."
Goulet and Miltank? Naoki thought of the Goulet in the game, which had a more aggressive personality, and speculated, "Maybe it's because of its temperamental nature. Even among the same species of Pokemon, there can be differences in temperament."
Dr. Olin nodded. "That's a possibility. Their personalities are indeed not as gentle as the Goulet by your side."
Naoki hesitated before adding, "There's one more thing."
Dr. Olin looked at him, surprised. "Oh?"
"It's because of Papa," Naoki said.
At these words, Dr. Olin paused.
Naoki continued, "You and Dr. Fort have devoted all your energy to your research, neglecting Papa. He's still young, and he may feel that Goulet and Miltank are taking away his parents' attention, so..."
He left the rest unsaid, but Dr. Olin understood.
She furrowed her brows slightly and fell silent once more.
Naoki remained quiet, giving Dr. Olin ample time to ponder.
It was Dr. Fort, not visible on the screen, who snapped out of his reverie first.
He stepped into the screen, appearing calmer than Dr. Olin.
"It's our oversight," he acknowledged. "Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Naoki."
Naoki thought to himself that he just didn't want to see Papa suffer the tragic fate of losing both his parents.
However, seeing their pensive expressions, he refrained from saying more, instead pondering how to warn them about the future explosion at the Fourth Observation Station that would claim their lives.
But try as he might, Naoki couldn't come up with a good solution.
If he outright revealed the future, the doctors might not believe him. And even if they did, given their obsession with research, it was unlikely they would give up on their work.
Just as Naoki was about to say something, Dr. Olin spoke up. "Let's end the communication for today."
She paused, then added, "After the research here is concluded, Fort and I will go visit Papa. Until next time, Naoki."
Naoki opened his mouth to respond, then simply nodded. "Okay."
Oh well, he thought, I'll leave it for another time!
After all, the incident was at least seven or eight years away, and he could always bring it up in more detail when he was closer to the doctors in the future.
As he watched the steam rising from the pot of dumplings, Naoki suddenly recalled that the Grass Dumplings could also benefit Tapu Fini.
The dumplings could provide Tapu Fini with Grass-type energy.
As long as it consumed enough grass dumplings and supplemented it with the energy converted from the faith of the nearby farmers, Tapu Fini wouldn't suffer from a lack of energy anymore.
Perhaps it could even cause Tapu Fini to feel uncomfortable if it didn't release its energy daily, just like his riding goat.
Compared to the riding goat's straightforward and aggressive energy release, Tapu Fini could vent its energy by bringing about bountiful harvests and blooming flowers.
The Grass Cake, on the other hand, could induce a chance for mutations in the crops that Tapu Fini brought to life.
Together, they could create a positive cycle.
In the game, after the player helped Tapu Fini retrieve its two horses, it would be willing to travel with the player.
But the question remained: Would the real-life Tapu Fini be willing to do the same?
If Tapu Fini ever decided to visit the ranch...
For some reason, Naoki's mind conjured up a scene:
"...Tapu Fini enjoying afternoon tea in the ranch, gracefully seated in a chair with a small round table before it, adorned with grass cakes and grass dumplings. In its hand, Tapu Fini held a cup of red tea, a specialty of Nothern Village, sipping it elegantly."
Oddly enough, the image was rather heartwarming.
If Tapu Fini ever agreed to come, Naoki wouldn't mind hosting a daily tea party and preparing a sumptuous afternoon tea with snacks for it.
However, all of this hinged on Tapu Fini's willingness to visit.
As the ancient ruler of the Galar region in ancient times, it was uncertain if Tapu Fini would ever leave its homeland.
Therefore, until that day arrived, he had to accumulate enough bargaining chips, like a true believer building a divine nation for their faith, to attract Tapu Fini.
Of course, his ultimate goal had absolutely nothing to do with Tapu Fini's horses.
As if!
---
League Calendar Year 198, April 16th, Summer.
Something big happened at the ranch that morning.
Three more Salandit had evolved into Salazzle.
With three additional Salazzle, their living quarters in the Salt House were becoming cramped.
Early in the morning, Naoki began instructing them to dig and expand their dwelling place.
However, the group of Salazzle, who had grown up in the house, had not mastered the move.
"Lele..."
They looked at each other, their voices heavy with confusion and distress, indicating that they didn't know how to perform the move.
Naoki: "..."
Well, that was a problem.
Naoki fell into deep thought.
At that moment, the only Salandit that hadn't evolved looked at the four large creatures, its eyes welling up with sadness.
Noticing its distress, the considerate Frost Fairy immediately went over to comfort it, gently patting its body with her tiny hands.
Naoki caught a glimpse of this scene from the corner of his eye.
This particular Salandit had left a deep impression on him.
Back when they were in the wild, this Salandit had been the weakest and most malnourished member of the group.
All this time, Naoki had taken a hands-off approach to the Salandit's salt production, which was why he hadn't interfered when several Salandit followed Frost Fairy around the ranch all day.
He didn't want to confine them indoors just for their salt.
Seeing the Salandit's dejected expression, Naoki immediately went over and comforted it with gusto:
"Don't be sad. Even if you never evolve, I'll take care of you for the rest of your life!"
The other four Salazzle were green with envy.
"Salazzle..."
The Salandit's heart was filled with both urgency and warmth.
Although it was touched, it didn't want to remain a Salandit forever! It wanted to evolve like the others and provide Naoki with even more rock salt!
Noticing the Salandit's reaction, Naoki realized he had said the wrong thing.
He scratched his head and quickly changed his tune: "Don't worry, from now on, I'll do my best to help you evolve!"
