Chapter 150: Earth Wasteland Arc (Sixteen)
Chapter 150: Earth Wasteland Arc (Sixteen)
Ten minutes later, the four had reached the boundary between the Fourth District and Third District. This area was clearly different from the earlier zones. A towering, thick metal perimeter wall separated the two regions, with guards stationed at every entrance. The guards wielded the same anti-gravity launchers as the patrol officers, but their shields were different. While patrol officers carried only standard metal shields, these guards used anti-gravity shields.
[Name: Anti-Gravity Shield]
[Type: Armor]
[Quality: Fine]
[Defense: Medium]
[Attribute: Cushion]
[Special Effect: None]
[Equipment Condition: Martial Arts Proficiency F, Level 10]
[Background: This armor can halt airborne objects smaller than one cubic meter and weighing less than 25 kilograms, such as flying baseballs or crashing suitcases. However, if someone hurls a refrigerator at you or launches a close-range attack, this shield’s defensive capabilities are no different from a standard metal shield.]
“Alright, Miss Mo Li, you may leave now,” Feng Bu Jue suddenly stopped as they approached the perimeter wall, just one street away. “For your safety, I’d advise you to keep your distance from here on.”
Though Mo Li halted, she wasn’t ready to give up. She still tried to persuade Hank: “Hank, think this through. What he’s saying—Darwin, evolution, freedom—it’s all unheard-of madness. These could be the heretical doctrines of heretics. You’ve been deceived.”
“Thank you for your concern, Miss Mo Li,” Hank replied. “If I don’t return, please tell my mother I’m sorry.”
Mo Li stood frozen, watching Hank turn away. She had no words left. The three companions didn’t exchange further words with her, striding toward the checkpoint at the perimeter wall’s entrance. As they walked, Feng Bu Jue and Kuangzong Jianying tore off their protective suits and discarded them.
Kuangzong Jianying retrieved the anti-gravity launcher confiscated from Hank and handed it back: “We’ll try to cover you, but it’s safer if you’re armed.”
“Don’t tense up, Hank,” Feng Bu Jue added. “These guards, who spend their days idling at posts, are no match for a Scavenger who battles mutated organisms daily. If you don’t let fear cloud your mind, you’ve got nothing to worry about.” He paused. “Once we storm through the perimeter wall, we’ll head straight for the Temple. Keep up.”
Hank nodded. “I’ll try.”
As they spoke, the three had already lined up at the checkpoint.
The on-duty guards were already stunned, staring blankly at Feng Bu Jue and Kuangzong Jianying’s appearance. They wondered in their minds… Could these two be the legendary “Foreigners”? Though they’d only heard rumors and propaganda about them, they’d never imagined actually encountering them, leaving them flustered and unsure what to do.
The man trailing the two uninvited guests wore the same village garb as residents of the First District, but he carried a Catapult and wore a resolute expression. Could he be planning to force his way into the priests’ quarters?
The guards were baffled, but a squad leader stepped forward, regaining his composure. He raised his anti-gravity shield and blocked the trio’s path, barking in an intimidating tone: “Halt! What do you want?” He glared at Feng Bu Jue and Kuangzong Jianying. “You two… Why are you wearing such strange clothes? Who are you?” His eyes shifted to Hank. “And you—what are you doing with a weapon?”
The three remained silent.
After a few seconds, Hank suddenly chuckled. “If this were yesterday, even if I did nothing, being stopped by a patrol officer would make me tremble with fear. But now, facing a squad leader, I feel nothing. Heh… I finally understand. This is what Kouben did to us.”
“You dare speak the Chosen of God’s name directly?” the squad leader gaped at Hank.
“If I still saw him as the Chosen of God, I’d never dare,” Hank replied. “But if I see him as a pile of dung, I’ll call him whatever I like.”
“Blasphemer!” the squad leader roared. “Seize him!”
The seven or eight surrounding guards surged forward.
In that moment, Kuangzong Jianying moved.
Within ten seconds, the sound of fists striking flesh—thud, thud—and a few muffled groans filled the air. The guards collapsed, some unconscious, others writhing on the ground, unable to rise.
Kuangzong Jianying hadn’t even drawn his sword. Partly because he didn’t want to recklessly kill innocents, but mostly because he could handle them barehanded.
“Wow… Impressive. No skills needed to take them down like that,” Feng Bu Jue remarked.
“They’re just too weak,” Kuangzong Jianying replied. “Their physical condition and reflexes are worse than ordinary civilians. From a game design perspective, they’re like players weaker than Level 1 by 30%. I’m a Level 7 Class player. This is nothing worth praising.” Since Hank and the squad leader wouldn’t understand these terms, the two players spoke freely.
By now, the squad leader was paralyzed with fear. From his perspective, this felt like an alien invasion.
In truth, these guards had little to do in their daily lives. Divine Protection Village was a small, tightly-controlled society with strict laws and few criminals. Rebels capable of challenging the upper class hadn't existed in centuries. Patrol officers handled public order, while guards were only tasked with guarding priests and the Kouben Family. Their combat experience was virtually zero. They'd never even dealt with a villager spitting on the ground near the perimeter wall. Today, three checkpoint breakers appeared out of nowhere and flattened them in ten seconds. The squad leader's reaction was completely normal.
“Drop the Catapult,” Feng Bu Jue told the squad leader, stepping forward.
The squad leader swallowed hard and wisely obeyed, tossing the Catapult aside.
Feng Bu Jue stared at the squad leader’s deathly pale face and smiled, patting his shoulder. “Why so serious? Smile a bit.”
Faced with the grim reaper before him, the squad leader forced a stiff grin.
The trio continued calmly, brushing past the squad leader and passing through the checkpoint into the Fourth District beyond the perimeter wall.
The squad leader stood frozen. After several dozen seconds, he collapsed to his knees, breathing rapidly as if suffering an asthma attack. Soon, many Third District residents gathered on the streets, murmuring in confusion. Even those who’d witnessed the incident couldn’t grasp what had happened.
Two minutes later, the squad leader suddenly leapt up as if waking from a dream, his face contorted with panic. “Foreigners! Foreigners have invaded!” he screamed.
