Chapter 149: Dumbledore's Compensation (Third Update)
Chapter 149: Dumbledore's Compensation (Third Update)
Dumbledore was clearly used to Snape's tough stance.
The only time Snape had shown any weakness in front of him was when he pleaded for Lily Evans's life.
"The original purpose of establishing the Quidditch matches was to strengthen students' cohesion, cultivate their courage and resilience, foster a spirit of self-transcendence, and instill a will to meet challenges, a competitive mindset, a spirit of cooperation, and a sense of fairness.
However, Mr. Carmen is so exceptional that if he continues to participate in the school's Quidditch matches, the matches will lose their meaning. No one can surpass him, and the outcome is predetermined before the match even begins.
After a few more games, even the other members of the Slytherin Quidditch team might stop training, knowing that as long as Jerry is there, they will win.
This is not a good thing for the growth of the Slytherin team or the entire school!"
Hearing Dumbledore's words, Snape fell silent.
Indeed, if Jerry remained on the Slytherin team, the Slytherin Quidditch matches would always end in victory, as the match would be over before it started.
But was this really fair to the other members of the Slytherin team?
They trained hard, hoping to prove their worth in the matches, but all the glory would go to Jerry, and they wouldn't even be considered as supporting players.
If this continued, it wouldn't be a good development, at least not for the entire school.
The school is not the real world. Its purpose is to educate students, not just to pursue victory. There needs to be a sense of suspense in the matches to motivate everyone. Without that, the matches would become stagnant.
"But this is unfair to Jerry!"
While he understood Dumbledore's reasoning, Snape felt it was very unfair to sacrifice Jerry's interests for the sake of the whole.
Dumbledore turned to Jerry and smiled.
"I'm just making a suggestion. The decision is ultimately up to Mr. Carmen. If Mr. Carmen disagrees, everything will remain as it is. If he agrees, I can offer him some compensation!"
"I have no objections. I am willing to follow the Headmaster's and the Head of House's arrangements!"
Seeing Dumbledore look at him, Jerry immediately broke into a big smile.
Whether Dumbledore was really considering the school's best interests or just Harry's fame, Jerry didn't really care.
Joining the Slytherin Quidditch team was originally to get the Nimbus 2000 from Snape and to boost his own reputation.
Now that he was already a school legend and had joined the national Quidditch team, he didn't need to worry about his reputation anymore. So if Snape agreed, he would actually be quite happy to not have to participate in the school matches.
Seeing Jerry's willingness to prioritize the bigger picture, Dumbledore nodded in satisfaction.
Snape, however, sighed and then said in a low voice:
"Since Jerry agrees, we will follow the Headmaster's suggestion. But I would like to know what kind of compensation the Headmaster can offer Jerry?"
Though he felt it was somewhat unfair to Jerry, Snape, as the Head of Slytherin, sometimes had to consider the bigger picture.
Now, he could only try to secure the best compensation for Jerry.
"That will depend on what Mr. Carmen needs. As long as it doesn't violate school rules, I will consider it favorably!"
Dumbledore smiled.
Jerry, hearing this, also flashed a row of bright white teeth, and without hesitation, presented his request for compensation:
"Well, my dream is to become a just auror, and it's said that to become an auror, one must have very strong Magic abilities.
So, so, so I was wondering, if Headmaster Dumbledore isn't too busy, could you spare some time each week to allow me to come and consult about Magic?"
Nothing could be more beneficial than learning Magic from the greatest wizard of the century!
Gold galleons, he would have plenty after joining the national Quidditch team. Asking for something too excessive, like access to the library's restricted section, would likely be a no-go for Dumbledore.
In that moment, the best and most acceptable condition Jerry could think of was to learn Magic from Dumbledore.
This fit his image as a diligent student and was currently the best choice.
While the professors at the school each had their specialties, none could match Dumbledore's comprehensive abilities and deep understanding and application of Magic. Dumbledore was undoubtedly the most learned and powerful wizard in the entire wizarding world.
Learning Magic from Dumbledore would undoubtedly accelerate his Magic strength, especially since he was trying to combine the advantages of Magic from two worlds to enhance the power of similar types of spells.
However, his foundation in Magic was still somewhat lacking, making progress extremely slow.
If Dumbledore agreed to his request, he believed this process could be significantly sped up.
"Alright, I accept your compensation request!"
Dumbledore was somewhat surprised to hear that Jerry's compensation request was for guidance in Magic, but he didn't say much more. After all, this request wasn't much of a burden for him.
As the headmaster of Hogwarts, he didn't have to teach classes, so he had a lot of free time. Most of his days were spent in the headmaster's office, researching various knitting techniques for sweaters and socks, eating some toffee, drinking sweet beverages, or taking a nap.
Moreover, as headmaster, he had no aversion to teaching students Magic. Before becoming headmaster, he had taught Defense Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration at Hogwarts.
Now, the professors at the school were highly skilled and more than capable of teaching students Magic, so he wasn't needed in that role.
Since Jerry's compensation request was this, he readily agreed.
Snape, standing beside Jerry, also nodded.
Snape knew Jerry's Magic talent the best, as he had given Jerry the most private tutoring.
Sometimes, the Magic questions Jerry raised were even beyond Snape's ability to answer completely.
Snape's specialties were potions and Dark Magic, and while he was competent in other areas, he wasn't at the top of his game.
Dumbledore, on the other hand, was a master in all fields, nearly reaching the pinnacle in each. With Dumbledore's guidance, Snape believed Jerry's talent could be fully realized.
So, he also thought Jerry's compensation request was excellent.
With all conditions settled, Snape and Jerry bid farewell to Dumbledore and left the headmaster's office.
"Headmaster, about the Slytherin team—"
In the corridor, Jerry feigned a hint of worry.
Snape waved his hand dismissively:
"Don't worry, I'll have Draco Malfoy replace you as seeker. I'm sure he won't be any worse than Potter!"
