Chapter 148: The Brave Savior
Chapter 148: The Brave Savior
The next morning, Kyle walked into the Great Hall, rubbing his eyes and sporting a pair of dark circles under them. He was so drowsy that he almost took a seat at the Slytherin table; thankfully, Mikel, who was walking alongside him, stopped him in time.
"Kyle, what's wrong?" Cedric asked, handing him a cup of milk. "Didn't sleep well last night?"
Kyle sighed. He hadn't just slept poorly; he hadn't slept at all. He had spent the entire night in the Restricted Section of the library, and instead of finding Advanced Guide to the Dark Arts or any substantial information on Horcruxes, he had only come across a single vague mention of the topic.
In a book titled Making Souls Boil, there was a cryptic sentence: "Only by finding a vessel to contain the soul can one grasp the key to eternal life."
That was it. Talk about a disappointing Restricted Section!
Ugh, false advertising!
Of course, it was impossible for Kyle to have searched through the entire Restricted Section in one night, but he had given up. It was clear that Dumbledore had removed all the books related to Horcruxes, and any remaining mentions were scant and useless.
Kyle looked up at his concerned friends, forced a smile, and shook his head. "It's nothing. I just had a strange dream last night, and it left me feeling a bit disoriented."
"A strange dream?" Cedric frowned. "I remember that Hufflepuff has Divination class today. Do you want me to ask Professor Sprout to excuse you from class?"
Influenced by Fred and George, Cedric had also opted to take Divination.
"No, it's fine," Kyle yawned again. "I just dreamt about studying all night. I guess I'm still adjusting to the new school year and got a bit too excited. I'll probably be fine tomorrow."
Hmm...
Upon hearing Kyle's explanation, everyone except Cedric turned away, losing interest.
Even dreaming about studying all night... Is this what it means to be the top student? Unbelievable!
Even Cedric couldn't help but smirk, suppressing a laugh.
"Hey, want to hear something interesting?" Mikel leaned in mysteriously. "I heard from a first-year Gryffindor student that Harry Potter and Ron Weasley fed Professor McGonagall fish treats during their Transfiguration class."
"They fed treats to Professor McGonagall?" Cedric's eyes lit up with curiosity. "You're kidding! Is that true?"
He knew that Professor McGonagall had a habit of demonstrating her Animagus form during the first class, but he never expected someone to dare provoke her like that.
In Cedric's eyes, it was clearly intentional. Who would bring fish treats to class unless they already knew Professor McGonagall would turn into a cat? They must have prepared the treats in advance.
It was no wonder he was the chosen one; his courage was truly remarkable.
"Of course, it's true," Mikel said through stifled laughter. "The news is spreading like wildfire through the school. A first-year student named Justin Finch-Fletchley said they fed her like a stray cat, throwing the treats from across the classroom. Professor McGonagall's face turned purple, and she made them... stand for the rest of the class."
At this point, Mikel couldn't hold back his laughter any longer and burst out laughing, his head on the table.
Over there, Harry and Ron were huddled in a corner, not daring to lift their heads, while Fred and George stood beside them, laughing and patting their shoulders vigorously.
In their opinion, what their younger brother and junior had done was undoubtedly a very brave act, so brave that even they couldn't help but admire it.
"The first-years these days sure are bold."
Kyle turned back, calmly picked up a piece of toast, and popped it into his mouth, followed by a few slices of fried eggs and bacon.
When he was nearly finished eating, he tapped his fingers on the table and said softly,
"Could I have a cup of tea, please?"
As soon as he finished speaking, a cup of steaming tea appeared in front of Kyle, along with a small jar of sugar cubes.
Kyle picked up the cup, tested the temperature, and finding it just right, drank the entire cup of tea in one go.
"May I have another cup, please?"
...
After drinking two cups of tea in a row, Kyle finally felt less drowsy. But to be safe, he asked for a third cup.
After all, the first class of the day was Transfiguration, and if he fell asleep in class, his fate would undoubtedly be worse than Harry's.
After leaving the Great Hall, the group bid Cedric farewell and headed together to the fourth-floor classroom for Transfiguration class.
Perhaps due to the influence of yesterday's incident, Professor McGonagall looked even sterner than usual.
And unlike Professor Flitwick, she didn't leave time for students to review what they had learned the previous year but instead dove straight into new material.
Transfiguring a beetle into a button was a challenge that was more difficult than anything they had faced the previous year.
The beetles were fast and agile.
Mikel waved his wand, spending quite some time just to make the beetle stretch its body.
Ryan was more clever; he directly held the beetle with his hand so that he didn't have to worry about missing his target.
However, just as he was about to raise his wand, Professor McGonagall appeared beside him and said sternly, "I already told you not to touch the beetles with your hands, didn't you hear me? Or do you think your left hand is superfluous?"
The beetles weren't large, and holding them with your hand made them seem even smaller. One wrong move, and the spell might hit your hand.
If you were lucky, nothing would happen, but if you weren't... Well, who knew what could happen?
Something like this had occurred last year, and as a result, a young wizard's fingers had fused together, and he had spent two whole days in the school hospital recovering.
Ryan was so scared that he stuttered, "P-Professor McGonagall, I... I forgot."
"Ten points from Hufflepuff!"
Professor McGonagall glared at him and turned away.
After witnessing Ryan's experience, the others dared not try any funny business and obediently chased the beetles around the table, frantically waving their wands.
However, most of their results were less than ideal.
The beetles were too agile, and many of the students gradually lost patience, waving their wands with increasing force.
A series of crackling sounds filled the classroom, accompanied by sparks that flew in all directions.
The beetles' mortality rate began to rise sharply, some being squished by stray wand movements, others blasted across the room, causing Professor McGonagall's expression to darken further.
