Chapter 147: Naoki the Missionary
Chapter 147: Naoki the Missionary
With the butler issue resolved, Naoki was in high spirits. He treated Evan to a meal in Fuchsia City as a token of his appreciation.
They chose the Fresh Fish Restaurant, a specialty seafood cuisine establishment, and sat under the shade of an umbrella at the entrance with their Motostoke Pokedex in tow. The waiter promptly served an array of fish dishes and four drinks.
As Naoki placed a fresh, plump slice of salmon sashimi in front of his Pokedex, he said, "Today really is thanks to you. Otherwise, it might have taken me a long time to find a housekeeper Pokemon."
"It was nothing!" Evan replied enthusiastically. "Is there anything else you need help with?"
As a matter of fact, there was. Naoki inquired, "Do you know where I can learn how to make Energy Squares?"
"Energy Squares?" Evan took a bite of fish and thought carefully before answering, "I don't know about that. Usually, those skilled in making Energy Squares are Pokemons breeders."
"Then where do they learn it from?" Naoki asked.
"Probably the Pokemon Breeder's Association?" Evan speculated. "I'm not really sure, though, since I'm just a small-town mail carrier. But don't worry, I'll ask around when I'm delivering mail next time."
"Thanks," said Naoki gratefully.
Evan added, "I'll help you, but don't disappoint me at next year's horse race!"
Hearing this, Naoki couldn't help but curse inwardly, "This guy still remembers the 10,000 Pokedollars he lost betting on horses!" However, he dared not make any promises, as he couldn't leave the ranch for extended periods, let alone the Paldea region, for the time being.
Noticing Naoki's expression, Evan started to wheedle, "No way! We had a deal! I help you find a housekeeper Pokemon, and you help me win back that 10,000 Pokedollars!"
Naoki reluctantly nodded, "Alright, alright! How about this, when winter comes and there's less work to do, I'll take the opportunity to see if I can find any horse Pokemons."
By then, the two helpful servants should be able to share the workload on the ranch, allowing him some free time to visit the Galar region.
Only then was Evan satisfied, but he still had his doubts, "Don't horse Pokemons usually hibernate during the winter?"
"It depends on the species!" Naoki recalled the Regirock's Frosted Snowhorse, "Some horse Pokemons are Ice-type and prefer to appear in icy and snowy conditions."
"I've never heard of such a Pokemon," Evan said, sounding skeptical.
Naoki teased, "You'll find out when the time comes."
"Alright, then I'll be waiting for your good news!" Evan said, finally content.
After finishing their meal, the two set off on their Motostoke Pokedex, heading back to the ranch.
By the time Naoki returned, it was already 2:00 p.m.
A group of Pokemons was leisurely sunbathing on the grass, and they eagerly approached him upon his arrival.
Naoki gently patted their little heads one by one and asked with a smile, "Did you have a good day today?"
"Woof!"
"Agasti~"
"Nyhi~"
"Salt, salt!"
"..."
Seeing that everyone was safe and sound, Naoki finally breathed a sigh of relief.
He allowed the Frosted Snover and the others to continue playing while he returned indoors to tidy up the mess the Pokemons had made in his absence.
During lunchtime, when he was away, Gouleston must have helped prepare sandwiches, tree fruit, and juice milk for the Pokemons.
Naoki noticed that the refrigerator was missing a significant quantity of these items.
Empty milk bottles were strewn haphazardly on the table, with one even rolling onto the floor.
Naoki picked them up, cleaned them, and placed them back in the refrigerator for future use.
After cleaning the inside of the house, Naoki went outside with a broom and swept away the fallen leaves and dust near Regirock's shrine.
Gazing at the shrine, which housed a Caulifla Rabbit sculpted from mud, Naoki placed several tree fruits on the altar as an offering.
The mud statue was never sturdy to begin with, and prolonged exposure to the scorching sun had caused it to crack.
Naoki: "..."
He pondered for a moment, thinking that since he had nothing better to do, he might as well make a new statue for Caulifla.
So that afternoon, he gathered his tools and a piece of wood, sitting under the eaves and carving a wooden sculpture while reminiscing about Caulifla's appearance.
In front of him, on the vast lawn, a group of Pokemon were running around, creating a lively atmosphere.
The afternoon sun bathed the grass in a warm glow.
Naoki quietly carved the wood, occasionally glancing up to check on his Pokemon, Dragonite and Golurk.
At 4:20 in the afternoon, a rudimentary wooden sculpture of Caulifla was complete.
To ensure its longevity, Naoki sought out Clery, asking her to help smooth and polish the sculpture, just like she did with furniture.
"What is this? A big hammer?"
Clery's face was filled with surprise as she took the oddly shaped wooden sculpture with its oversized head from Naoki's hands.
Naoki: "......Is it ugly?"
Clery: "Not really."
Seeing the "big hammer" with a face and legs, she asked, "This isn't a Pokemon, is it?"
"Yes," Naoki replied honestly. "It's a Pokemon called Caulifla."
He recounted the legend of Caulifla to Clery, telling her how it could help crops grow. He suggested that she could make a few statues to display or even sell them to nearby farmers.
All of this, Naoki thought, was for the eventual taming of the Frosted Snowhorse and Spectral Steed.
The faith of a single person might be too weak for Caulifla to sense, but if more humans knew of its name, perhaps it could feel their collective devotion.
"Alright, alright, I'll go polish and wax it, but it'll take some time. Come back tomorrow to pick it up," Clery said, not taking Naoki's words too seriously.
"Okay."
Naoki replied and rode off on his Golurk.
Meanwhile, in the distant Galar region, Caulifla once again sensed the actions of its devout follower.
What did it see?!
Not only did this follower worship it alone, but he was actively spreading its name to others in that far-off, unfamiliar land!
"What a wonderful believer I have!"
At that moment, Caulifla's favorability toward its little believer kept increasing.
It sensed the power of faith that had accumulated within itself over time and gently waved its left hand, casting its power and causing its eyes to glow.
Even though its power was still weak and it couldn't make vast fields fertile and abundant, it could manage a plant or two.
Caulifla wanted to give a hint to its little believer, urging him to come to the Crown Tundra to seek it out.
In the depths of the night, all creatures had fallen asleep.
A beam of light representing abundance traveled through time and space, landing on an inconspicuous crop in a field.
In the next moment, the crop began to change at a visible rate.
It sprouted from the ground, turning into a seedling and then a sturdy vine.
Soon, a yellow, fragile flower bloomed on the vine, which gradually matured into a ripe watermelon.
The transformation didn't stop there.
The watermelon continued to grow, encroaching on the space of the surrounding plants until it became a gigantic, nearly two-meter-tall super watermelon.
Caulifla: "The Paldea region feels like my long-lost hometown!"
