Chapter 147: Harry's Misadventure and a Bag of Cat Food
Chapter 147: Harry's Misadventure and a Bag of Cat Food
If it were just adding a single class, Professor McGonagall would likely not refuse, but switching classes... Kyle honestly felt the chances were slim.
However, looking at Fred and George's hopeful expressions, he merely shrugged and said nothing.
Letting them try wouldn't hurt, and who knows, maybe Professor McGonagall would be in a good mood today and agree to it.
The first class of the year was still Spellcasting, and after leaving the Great Hall, Kyle bid farewell to the Weasley brothers and Cedric, heading to the fourth floor of the castle on his own.
As he reached the second floor, Kyle suddenly spotted two new students spinning around on the stairs.
Harry and Ron.
They circled around two fake staircases, constantly hovering on the second floor, looking flustered and lost.
After watching them for a while, Kyle couldn't help but speak up, "What are you doing... exercising?"
Ron suddenly turned his head, as if seeing a savior, and pulled Harry to rush over.
"We're trying to get to the Transfiguration classroom, but we're lost," he panted, asking, "Can you tell us how to get there?"
"Follow me," Kyle said, "I'm heading to the fourth floor anyway."
"Thank goodness!" Ron's face relaxed with relief.
"Th-thank you," Harry said, glancing at Kyle with some awkwardness.
"It's no problem, it's on my way anyway."
Kyle led the two to the correct staircase, asking curiously, "Didn't you guys buy the Hogwarts Map?"
Upon hearing this, Ron's face turned red, and he kept his head down without saying a word.
Harry also felt a bit embarrassed, "Twenty Galleons is too expensive, I... we can't afford it."
Although his vault was filled with piles of gold, he hadn't brought much for this school year. After deducting the cost of his wand and textbooks, he had just over twenty Galleons left.
It was only the beginning of the school year, and there was still a long way to go. Naturally, Harry didn't want to spend all his money on a map.
"I'm not talking about that," Kyle said as he led them around a corner, "There are two types of maps, besides the twenty Galleon one, there's also a more affordable version for ten Sickles... What, didn't Fred and George tell you?"
Harry and Ron were both stunned.
After Kyle's mention, Harry suddenly remembered the flyer about the map posted on the door of the common room.
Both he and Ron had subconsciously assumed it was the kind they had seen on the train, and neither of them had paid much attention.
Thinking of this, Harry's face immediately scrunched up, feeling regretful.
If he had taken the time to read it carefully, he could have afforded the ten Sickle version.
"We're here, the Transfiguration classroom is over there," Kyle pointed in a direction after reaching the fourth floor, then took something from his pocket and handed it to Harry.
"Consider this a small gift for meeting you," he said.
Harry looked down and realized he now had two maps and a bag of... jerky?
"What's this?" Ron asked.
"It looks like cat food," Harry said, "Does Kyle have a cat?"
Ron thought for a moment, "He does have one."
Harry quickly raised his head and called out, "Kyle, you gave us an extra bag of cat food!"
"It's for you too!"
Kyle seemed eager to get to class, and without turning back, he said, "I have plenty of it, take it back for your owl to eat."
As he spoke, he turned a corner and disappeared at the end of the corridor.
This...
Harry stood there, holding the bag of jerky, looking dazed.
"Let's go, Harry, class is about to start."
Ron suddenly tugged at him and spoke urgently, "That's Professor McGonagall's class, we better not be late."
"Okay, okay."
Harry snapped out of his daze and put the jerky into his pocket, following Ron as they ran towards the other side.
At this moment, Kyle had already entered the Charms classroom.
On the first day of the new school year, Professor Flitwick didn't immediately teach new content but instead reviewed the spells they had learned last year.
He spent half the class period checking everyone's Levitation Charm and Softening Charm, only returning to the platform of books when he was sure most students could cast these two spells skillfully.
"Today we will learn the Universal Unlocking Charm, which can eliminate the effects of ordinary spells... Watch my movements, and be firm when waving your wand, and your voice should be clear... Finite Incantatem!"
After Charms class, Kyle went to Magical History.
In the afternoon, there were two consecutive periods of Snape's Potions class.
Like last year, Snape still didn't give Kyle any good looks.
"Who let you chat while brewing potions?" Snape stood next to Kyle, looking grim. "Don't affect others if you're not learning yourself, Hufflepuff minus one point."
Then he turned to Conna.
"Well done with the lionfish bones, Hufflepuff plus one point."
Kyle looked at Snape with a calm expression. He was used to the professor's double standards, and compared to the previous year when he started with five points, this year was still not bad.
...
The first day of the new school year passed like this. Although some classes weren't very pleasant, overall, it was still a fulfilling day.
Nighttime.
The library on the second floor of the castle was very quiet, with no sound at all. The tall bookshelves blocked the moonlight coming through the windows, making it seem even darker than other places.
"Creak..."
Suddenly, the door opened just enough for a person to enter, creating a narrow gap.
"Clack, clack..."
After the door closed again, a clear set of footsteps echoed in the library.
"Tsk, Filch is too dedicated," Kyle said, shaking his head.
He had just removed the Disillusionment Charm and was patting his chest in relief. Earlier, when he was on the stairs, Filch had suddenly appeared from somewhere, almost brushing past his shoulder.
Kyle also noticed that Mrs. Norris had stopped beside him and looked at him suspiciously.
Kyle guessed that she might have sensed something unusual, but she wasn't entirely sure yet.
Fortunately, Filch seemed to be chasing someone at the time, and with his urging, Mrs. Norris left.
"It seems that using just the Disillusionment Charm isn't enough for night excursions. I need to find a spell that can conceal my scent."
Kyle took a deep breath and walked straight towards the Restricted Section.
He remembered the book that introduced Horcruxes; it was called 'Unveiling Advanced Dark Magic,' if he recalled correctly.
Kyle suddenly felt a bit of a headache coming on.
The Restricted Section, although only a small part of the library, still had thousands of books.
Without using magic, finding the book 'Unveiling Advanced Dark Magic' precisely among them was no easy task.
"I hope I can find it tonight."
Kyle sighed, lit his wand, and walked into the rows of bookshelves.
