Chapter 1460: The Advancing Death Eaters
Chapter 1460: The Advancing Death Eaters
"...regarding the death of the French Auror, Victor, at the hands of a Dark Wizard."
In the morning, as Harry entered the dining hall, he heard Sirius discussing recent important events with the others.
"Why did those Dark Wizards go all the way to France to kill that French Auror? It seems rather odd to me," Harry said, voicing his confusion as he finished off a slice of toast.
"According to the news from over there, it seems those three Frenchmen directly used the name of the Dark Lord, which led to them being killed by Death Eaters who thought they were members of the Order of the Phoenix."
Sirius still believed that the three had died due to their own arrogance. Kingsley had already warned them when he met them that the name "Voldemort" had been enchanted and was a forbidden word that must not be spoken, but they had wanted to test it out anyway, and now they had paid the price.
"There aren't many people left who would dare to be so reckless. These days, not many British wizards dare to openly oppose the Death Eaters," said Diggory, well aware of the current state of the country. Britain was fast becoming a living hell.
Those British wizards who were unwilling to leave or hide had to live in constant fear, worried that Dark Wizards might target them at any moment.
"The Death Eaters believe that a French wizard named Victor was actually killed by Anderson," Moody suddenly interjected, surprising everyone. "They think it's Anderson's plot."
"How afraid of Albert must they be to try so desperately to smear him?" Harry found the Death Eaters' actions quite amusing.
"They think Albert is trying to drag the International Wizarding Federation into this and use the Aurors from various European countries to deal with the Death Eaters," Sirius said. He, too, had suspected that this might be Albert's doing, as the whole situation was rather peculiar. If it really was Albert's handiwork, then he had already succeeded to a large extent.
"That's completely unnecessary. If Albert really wanted to deal with the Death Eaters, he could easily wipe them out by himself," Harry said.
"But that guy has done similar things before. Remember Scrimgeour?" Moody reminded them. "Quite a few Death Eaters were executed on Scrimgeour's orders."
"Scrimgeour didn't have a choice," Harry argued. "Once he became the Minister of Magic, he became a thorn in the Dark Lord's side. In that situation, what else could he do but take out the Death Eaters? Should he have just waited for the Dark Lord to break them out of Azkaban?"
Harry wondered if Moody had some sort of bias against Albert. As for the wedding incident, it could only be described as a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Regardless of whether or not Albert was involved in this incident, the situation was turning in their favor either way.
Moreover, Harry believed that when it came to dealing with the Dark Lord, any means necessary were justified.
Moody and Sirius exchanged a glance but didn't dwell on the topic further.
However, the atmosphere in the dining hall became somewhat subdued, for reasons unknown, until someone else entered.
"How's Bill doing?" Ginny asked, turning to Harry as she sat down with her plate of stewed potatoes.
"He's much better. He's already able to sit up and eat by himself," Ginny said, sitting down next to Harry and asking about something she had just heard.
"Tonks said that the people from the International Wizarding Federation seem to want you to go over there," Ginny said.
"Oh, that," Sirius interjected. "We discussed it recently and decided that Harry shouldn't go. I don't think you'd want to go either, Harry."
"I never intended to go in the first place. I don't really trust those people from the International Wizarding Federation. At the end of the day, politicians have low standards, and I doubt I'd be welcomed there," Harry said.
"Let's just send Kingsley. He's better at dealing with this sort of thing," Ron suggested.
"There's no need for Harry to take that risk," Hermione added.
"Do you think the International Wizarding Federation will really send Aurors to interfere in Britain's situation?" Ron asked as he joined the conversation.
"Not likely. They've been sitting on the sidelines and watching the show from the beginning," Sirius replied, not sounding very optimistic.
"We have to try, though. If we can get them involved, it would be for the better," said Diggory, voicing the thoughts of the group.
As they had suspected, the International Wizarding Federation indeed did not want to get involved in Britain's mess. They argued endlessly, leaving Kingsley, whom they had invited, hanging.
Looking at these "important" people who didn't care about saving face, Kingsley felt relieved that they hadn't brought Harry over.
As the meeting was about to end, Kingsley finally got his chance to speak.
However, the wizards who had invited him were not friendly toward the man who had brought them so much trouble.
"I don't think this is solely Britain's problem. The Dark Lord has already caused a lot of trouble for many countries," Kingsley said, having prepared his arguments beforehand.
"Can't you just use his real name?" someone interrupted before Kingsley could finish.
"And do you think he deserves the title of Dark Lord?" another wizard added, expressing the doubts of many in the room.
After all, the last wizard to be known as the Dark Lord was Grindelwald, and the havoc he had wreaked on the European wizarding world was still fresh in everyone's minds. In comparison, this new Dark Lord seemed a bit unqualified.
To most wizards, he was just a particularly powerful Dark Wizard, nothing more.
"Well, the Dark Lord has placed a curse on his name. If someone speaks it, the Death Eaters will know," Kingsley said, his expression strange. This was the first time he had heard anyone actively asking to bring up Voldemort's name.
"But since everyone thinks it's necessary..." Kingsley took a deep breath and said in a loud, clear voice, "The Dark Lord's name is Voldemort.
"This is the name Voldemort gave himself, derived from his original name. According to Dumbledore's investigations before his death, Voldemort's original name was Tom Riddle, and he was a half-blood wizard."
As he finished speaking, they could hear a series of explosions outside.
Before long, the door to the meeting room was suddenly flung open, and a middle-aged wizard rushed in, panting. "There's a group of unknown Dark Wizards outside! They're attacking us! Our people can't hold them off much longer. I suggest we retreat temporarily..."
Before the wizard could finish, another deafening explosion shook the room, and their enemies seemed to have... broken through.
