Chapter 146: Divine Wind's Light Sound
Chapter 146: Divine Wind's Light Sound
Don't underestimate Sylla just because it has short legs - its massive body makes it surprisingly fast in Kuro's eyes.
Autumn Waterblade shimmered faintly as Kuro vanished from his spot, a black streak of light slicing toward Sylla's metallic limbs.
Kuro reappeared on the other side of Sylla, Autumn Water already sheathed. With a soft click, the last inch of the blade disappeared into its scabbard.
"One Sword Style."
Hiss!
A massive spark erupted from Sylla's metal leg as a blade mark appeared on its surface.
"This hard?" Kuro clicked his tongue. "Harder than Lida's Haki, even."
Of course, he meant Lida's Haki.
"Grraa!" Sylla spun its head toward Kuro, furiously flapping its wings as it charged.
Whoosh!
Kuro instantly appeared atop Sylla's head, eyes narrowing as he drew Autumn Water in a flash.
Another black streak of energy materialized above Sylla's skull.
"Ichiryu Style·Crescent Moon Slash."
Hiss!
A cascade of sparks exploded from Sylla's eye sockets. Those metallic nodules covered the area completely - ordinary slashes proved useless.
No wonder Marco couldn't handle it.
"Grraa!" The monstrous bird spread its wings and slammed downward toward airborne Kuro.
Kuro backflipped effortlessly, dodging the attack before landing on the ground.
"Slow as it is, this thing's defensive power is incredible. New World monsters really are dangerous."
Kuro's expression turned peculiar as he glanced at the villagers who'd fled far away, hiding under rocks or behind trees. Living in this world must be exhausting for them.
Failing to strike Kuro, the monstrous bird angrily flapped its wings before freezing mid-air. Fixing Kuro with a stare, it suddenly opened its beak. Its tongue shot out - covered in backward-facing spines, the flexible muscle writhed menacingly.
"Pretty nimble tongue." Kuro chuckled. "Pity you're a bird - otherwise you'd have plenty of admirers."
The monstrous bird ignored him, swaying its tongue left before suddenly yanking it right.
What was that supposed to mean?
A taunt?
"Grraa!" With a screech, the spined tongue became a blur, rocketing forward at incredible speed.
This speed!
Kuro barely raised Autumn Water in time. The tongue slammed against the blade with a metallic clang.
Clang!
A tremendous force surged through the sword, forcing Kuro backward in a skid that left deep grooves in the earth.
Boom!
Kuro crashed through a house, leaving a gaping hole before flying out the other side. He slid along the ground for dozens of meters before stopping.
The tongue remained connected to the monstrous bird's beak, stretching from dozens of meters away.
Kuro swallowed hard. "Are you some kind of grandma?! How's that tongue so long and fast?!"
Realizing this New World bird had an abnormally long tongue, Kuro's curiosity flared. What evolutionary purpose did this serve? He'd investigate this phenomenon right away -
Like hell he would!
Kuro tightened his grip on the hilt, black Haki seeping from his hand along the blade.
Suddenly, the monstrous bird seemed to sense danger, snapping its tongue back into its mouth.
Kuro froze. His Armament Haki had only reached the hilt!
"Can you even use Observation Haki?!" Kuro shouted, eyes wide with disbelief.
Monsters possessing Observation Haki?
Just how terrifying was this New World?
Flapping its wings, the monstrous bird launched a hail of metallic spines.
"Slash Wave!" Kuro slashed a golden arc that shattered half the incoming projectiles before dissipating. The remaining spines kept coming, joined by more as the monstrous bird continued its assault.
Kuro's expression darkened. Was this thing trying to drain his Haki reserves? These spines proved resistant - slashes only deflected them, not destroying them.
New World monsters really were terrifying!
Clang!
The metallic spines rained down, each about dagger-sized. Excellent quality!
Kuro's eyes gleamed as an idea formed. Abandoning Haki slashes, he raised his hand.
"Lion Might!"
A thick earthen wall erupted before him, swallowing the metallic storm.
Kuro grinned excitedly. Such sturdy projectiles! They could even rival Tina's quality!
Tina might have longer range, but hardness-wise? Not even close.
If only there were more...
Free resources - why not take advantage?
Boom!
The earthen wall shattered under the bombardment, debris scattering.
Kuro stepped back, forming another lion-shaped wall. Let them keep coming!
The wall exploded, Kuro raising his hand again. "Triple Lion Gate!"
Three massive earthen walls formed a towering gateway, crowned by mighty lion heads.
Enraged, the monstrous bird flapped wildly, releasing even denser metallic spines.
"More! More! I love it!" Kuro growled with delight.
The spines shattered the first, second, then third walls.
Just as Kuro prepared to raise another, he noticed the monstrous bird hesitating, suspicion in its eyes.
Perfect timing. Kuro immediately feigned exhaustion, clutching his chest and panting dramatically.
"I... I can't keep going! This monster's too terrifying!"
"Grraa!" The monstrous bird resumed its attack.
"This is my final move, Sylla!" Kuro shouted weakly, raising his fist. "Quintuple Lion Gate!"
Five earthen walls formed.
Behind them, Kuro straightened up and whistled.
More! He'd take as much as he could!
The monstrous bird proved quite useful -
Pity it probably ate constantly. Judging by its metallic projectiles and earlier behavior, it might even consume humans!
Such an intelligent beast might be worth taming, but even without human consumption, maintaining this giant body?
He already had one glutton at home. Couldn't support another metal-eating monster.
The five lion gates shattered.
"Grraa!" The monstrous bird spread its wings triumphantly, beak wide open like some ridiculous crab.
Kuro collapsed to one knee, trembling as he raised his arm. "I... I have one last bit of strength! I'll protect the civilians! That's my duty as a Navy!"
"Navy big brother!" A voice rang from the woods.
Shirui emerged with a determined expression, followed by others who'd made their choice.
"You've done enough, young man", the burly man said with a smile. "Whatever your business is, we won't let the Navy look down on us. We're protected by Whitebeard! We don't need Navy protection!"
"Exactly! If anyone protects the Navy, it'll be us - proving Whitebeard's strength!"
More villagers stepped forward, weapons in hand.
"Young man, run! This isn't your fight!"
Bang! The burly man fired into the air. "Let the Navy see the spirit of Whitebeard's people!"
"Charge!!!"
Men, women, and children charged toward Sylla.
Kuro stared blankly.
What were they doing? He'd been faking being a bird, not a human!
But it was too late now.
The monstrous bird screeched, metallic spines forming across its wings.
"What a mess", Kuro sighed, his plan failing.
He raised Autumn Water, Haki surging as he dragged two fingers along the blade.
"Unenlightened Divine Wind Murderous Sword!"
Golden light mixed with black energy along the blade.
"Grraa!" Sylla shrieked, metallic nodules trembling in fear as it retracted its spines, trying to take flight.
Kuro gripped Autumn Water with both hands above his head.
Whoosh!
His form rippled like a reflection on water, vanishing from dozens of meters away.
The next instant, Kuro appeared before the monstrous bird, cleaving downward.
Hiss!!!
The Haki-infused black blade slashed across the monster's belly, sending sparks flying as it pierced the metallic defenses, unleashing a torrent of blood.
"Azure Dragon (Jiaolong)!"
The charging villagers froze, staring at the wounded Sylla.
"He actually pierced Sylla's defense!" the burly man stammered.
That was a defense even Marco couldn't breach!
"Grraa!!!" The monstrous bird cried in pain, lifting into the air.
"It's escaping!" the burly man shouted.
After breaking through Sylla's defense, they let it escape?
A priceless opportunity lost forever!
Another villager patted the burly man's shoulder. "Enough already. He's done more than enough."
"What a shame", the burly man sighed, watching Sylla ascend past the buildings. "If only we were stronger..."
Kuro turned away, expressionless as he flicked blood from Autumn Water before sheathing it slowly.
"Did you hear that?"
Boom!!!
Sylla's body suddenly expanded like a balloon mid-air before exploding, scattering blood and metal fragments across the sky.
"Divine wind's light sound."
Click.
The final inch of the blade slid home.
