Chapter 146: Cedric to the Rescue
Chapter 146: Cedric to the Rescue
On the first day of the new school year, Fred and George Weasley became the center of attention for everyone.
Even upon returning to the common room, the young witches and wizards couldn't stop talking about the twin troublers.
"Do you think the Weasley brothers will actually be able to sell those candies?"
Sitting on a sofa, Cedric voiced his doubt. "I can't imagine Professor McGonagall approving of them."
"They probably won't be able to do it openly," Kyle replied after a moment's thought. "But as long as they aren't caught, it should be fine. The school already prohibits bringing in Filibuster Fireworks and Stink Pellets, yet we still see them around, don't we? The professors are usually too busy to bother with such minor matters."
"This feels different," Cedric frowned.
He recalled Fred and George mentioning before the start of term that the candies were meant to help students skip classes... Surely the professors wouldn't turn a blind eye to that?
Kyle shrugged, indicating that he wasn't sure either. However, based on his knowledge of the mischievous twins, he suspected they already had a plan to circumvent any obstacles.
Moreover, as long as they weren't caught red-handed, the professors were unlikely to suspect Fred and George. They would probably assume the candies were a Zonko's product or from some other joke shop, eventually adding them to the list of prohibited items.
Well, that was likely how things would play out.
As was customary for Hufflepuffs, the post-holiday homework session was inevitable.
As the common room filled up, Kyle and Cedric returned to their respective dormitories, leaving space for students eager to attempt miraculous last-minute assignments.
Their dormitory remained the same as last year, except for a new sign on the door that read "Second Year."
The room's furnishings were unchanged, and it was spotlessly clean, thanks to the diligent house-elves.
Lying on his bed, Kyle gazed at the familiar surroundings and soon drifted into a hazy state of mind.
Having gone to bed early, Kyle woke up bright and early the next day and made his way alone to the eighth floor of the castle.
Thanks to the Room of Requirement's ability to perfectly simulate natural environments, coupled with the daily fertilizing by the Mooncalf, his garden had thrived even during his two-month absence.
However, there were noticeable changes.
The most apparent was the Devil's Snare, which had grown significantly due to its proximity to the Mooncalf's lair. Its tendrils were now as thick as wrists and had darkened in color.
Additionally, the Muggle-Repelling Plants he had planted before the break had already sprouted. Their fist-sized mouths opened and closed, and Kyle estimated that they would start developing teeth in a week or two.
The White Willow and the Rue were also thriving, forming a lush, verdant patch.
The Mooncalf was asleep.
The Billywig was buzzing about excitedly, and upon spotting Kyle, it flew over, its propeller-like appendage whirring.
Kyle instinctively took a step back and offered a brief greeting before leaving the Room of Requirement.
The little creature seemed overly exuberant today, zipping around him in circles, seemingly forgetting about the venomous stinger it possessed.
Kyle had no desire to be stung.
After exiting, Kyle made his way down the stairs and back into the Great Hall.
The hall was already occupied by quite a few students, huddled in small groups, whispering and glancing towards the Gryffindor table.
"There he is, look."
"Where?"
"Next to that tall red-headed boy, the one with glasses."
"Harry Potter!"
"Did you see his face... that scar!"
Harry seemed uncomfortable with the attention, keeping his head down as he hastily ate his breakfast.
George shuddered. "Snape will have our heads."
"I could lend you my work," Cedric offered. "But class is about to start. Are you sure you'll have time to copy it now?"
"We should be fine," Fred nodded vigorously. "Our next class isn't Potions; we have Divination next, so we can copy during that."
"Alright then," Cedric thought for a moment. "I'll go get it for you after breakfast."
"We're so grateful!" Fred and George exclaimed together, their faces filled with relief.
"You've saved our lives!"
Cedric merely smiled faintly. Since the night before, he had been the savior of many a student.
Kyle sat down next to the Weasley twins, curious. "So, you two picked Divination?"
"Divination and Care of Magical Creatures," Fred replied. "Divination was a must-pick, according to Charlie. He said it's an easy class to get a high score in, and it's pretty relaxed."
"Just make sure you tell Professor Trelawney what she wants to hear when she asks how you're feeling, and you're free to do whatever you like," George added. "I'd recommend you take Divination next year, Kyle. It's a godsend for students."
"I'll definitely consider it," Kyle agreed, looking between the two. After a moment's hesitation, he continued, "If you're interested, I'd suggest you also take Ancient Runes. It'll be useful if you're serious about opening a joke shop."
"Why's that?" Fred asked, perplexed.
"It's supposed to be incredibly difficult," George frowned. "Percy spent most of the holidays poring over those books."
"That's true," Kyle nodded. "But if you want to create joke products, which are a type of alchemy, then Ancient Runes will be a big help."
Alchemy? Fred and George exchanged a glance, suddenly understanding Kyle's suggestion.
Their joke products did fall under the category of alchemy, and if Ancient Runes could aid in that, it would be invaluable.
"Kyle, why are you just telling us this now?" George exclaimed, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
It was too late to change their elective choices now. If they wanted to take Ancient Runes, they'd have to petition Professor McGonagall to add an extra class.
Three electives... that would undoubtedly eat into their free time. If they went ahead and asked Professor McGonagall, they'd have less time for their hobbies and interests.
But having their own joke shop had always been their dream, and if Ancient Runes truly helped with alchemy, they couldn't pass it up.
The twins were torn.
"What if we go talk to Professor McGonagall?" George suggested after a moment's thought. "Do you think she'd agree to let us swap out Care of Magical Creatures for Ancient Runes?"
...
Apologies, I was away last night and forgot to schedule the release.
