Chapter 1458: Killing the Innocent for Glory
Chapter 1458: Killing the Innocent for Glory
To be honest, Victor felt that his trip to Britain was quite surreal, even making him wonder if he had traveled back to the era of Grindelwald's rule over Europe. But upon further reflection, not even the dark period of Grindelwald's reign seemed to parallel the events occurring within the British wizarding community.
This situation went beyond mere catastrophe, and Victor suspected that the individual known as Voldemort was nothing but a raving lunatic.
How else could one describe the devastation he had wrought upon his own homeland?
What was his ultimate goal? To establish a lawless nation ruled by Dark Wizards?
Regardless, ever since following the wizard named Kingsley to visit several Muggle villages ravaged by Death Eaters and witnessing the hordes of Inferi, Victor had not wanted to remain in this accursed place for a single moment longer.
He wanted to go home.
Fortunately, he was not alone in this sentiment. One of his companions, an older and more level-headed Auror, was the first to voice this proposal.
"We have found the resistance organization against the Dark Wizard, so let's leave Britain as soon as possible," the middle-aged Auror suggested. "There is an air of malevolence about this country that gives me an uneasy feeling."
"It's best to leave now. Staying here may not be safe, and I believe we have gathered sufficient information," Victor immediately agreed, making the decision to depart from Britain.
To be frank, normal Dark Wizards would never engage in such atrocities. That group controlling the Ministry of Magic, self-proclaimed Death Eaters, were nothing but a band of lunatics.
After deciding to leave Britain, the trio hurried towards the coast of the English Channel near Dover, intending to Apparate directly across the channel back to mainland France.
When they finally set foot on French soil, they heaved a collective sigh of relief. However, the young Auror, who had been silent until then, suddenly spoke up, "I can't shake the feeling that this Voldemort character is even more insane than Grindelwald ever was!"
"Don't mention that name," Victor snapped at the young Auror, his heart clenching with anger. "Didn't you hear..."
"Calm down, Victor. We're back in France now," the middle-aged Auror soothed, sensing that Victor's emotions were running high.
However, before Victor could say anything further, a deafening blast echoed through the air, signaling the arrival of an uninvited wizard who had Apparated nearby.
"Damn!"
Victor drew his wand and took down the intruder, attempting to Apparate away with his colleagues. But they were quickly surrounded by seven or eight wizards, their wands pointed menacingly at the trio. A barrage of curses flew towards them, forcing them to dodge haphazardly and miss their best opportunity to escape.
"Drop your wands and raise your hands! This is your only chance!"
The opposing group of Dark Wizards shouted menacingly, demanding their surrender while continuing to cast spells at them. The three Aurors had no choice but to engage in a fierce duel.
The battle erupted suddenly and inexplicably.
Fortunately, Victor and his companions, elite Aurors sent to investigate the situation in Britain, were adept at dealing with such ambushes. They seized the initiative by leveraging their quick reactions.
As casualties fell on both sides and a temporary stalemate ensued, Victor angrily shouted at their attackers, "Damn you! Are you mad dogs to ambush us like this?"
Victor had no intention of compromising with these Death Eaters, but their group was outnumbered, and the situation was worsened by the fact that these Dark Wizards fought like crazed fanatics.
Victor, of course, had no idea that these individuals were seeking "glory" through their actions. In his eyes, they were nothing but a pack of mad dogs.
"Drop your wands and surrender peacefully," the cloaked Dark Wizard facing them sneered. "As long as you're not from the Order of the Phoenix, we'll let you go."
"Damn the Order of the Phoenix! We were just buying some prohibited items on the black market," Victor retorted.
As he spoke, the middle-aged Auror beside him reached into his pocket, intending to produce evidence to support their claim.
However, he unknowingly made a fatal mistake. Any wizard who had faced off against members of the Defense Association knew that those cunning individuals always carried a variety of objects in their pockets, ready to be drawn at a moment's notice.
And so, he died.
Multiple streaks of dark magic struck him, sending his body flying.
"Gael, no!"
Watching his colleague die unexpectedly, Victor was driven to the brink of madness. He realized that these assailants had no intention of letting them live, so he brandished his wand and fought back with all his might.
However, Victor was not Albert. While he possessed considerable combat experience from his years of battling Dark Wizards, he stood no chance against a group of veterans forged in the crucible of the Wizarding War.
Victor perished, brutally slain by the Dark Wizards.
But his enemies had also paid a steep price, as most of their group had been decimated in the skirmish.
"These three must be members of the Order of the Phoenix. Ordinary wizards wouldn't possess such skill," the leader of the Dark Wizards asserted, setting the tone for the interpretation of events. Regardless of the truth, these three wizards were now their "trophies." In Britain, only one group dared to openly resist them with such prowess—the Order of the Phoenix.
But how could they be certain?
It seemed impossible to verify, as both members of the Defense Association and the Order of the Phoenix were known to disguise their movements with Polyjuice Potion when traveling abroad.
The problem now was that the bodies had been mangled beyond easy recognition.
These Dark Wizards failed to realize that they were no longer in Britain, nor did they comprehend the identities of those they had just slain. Or perhaps, it simply didn't matter to them, as they had already concluded that their victims were undoubtedly members of the Order of the Phoenix or the Defense Association.
After the Dark Wizards returned with the bodies, an unknown amount of time passed before a group of French Ministry of Magic Aurors rushed to the scene and used magic to temporarily reconstruct the events that had transpired.
"So, you're telling me that our Aurors were killed on our own soil by a group of strangers, and we are just finding out about this now?" The French Minister of Magic glared at the Director of the Auror Office, nearly crumpling the simple report in his hands before tossing it back at him.
"Enough! I don't want to hear any explanations," the Minister continued. "Do you have any suspects?"
"We suspect it was the work of Dark Wizards from Britain," the Director replied. "It's likely that their identities were exposed, leading to their pursuit and assassination."
"And what do those Dark Wizards call themselves?" the Minister inquired.
"Death Eaters," the Director answered.
After repeating the word "Death Eaters" twice to himself, the Minister turned to his assistant and issued a set of instructions. "Very well, I believe it's time to write a letter and prepare for a press conference. We cannot keep this incident under wraps. Also, send our people to deal with those damned Death Eaters. I hope that Victor and his companions are still alive."
