Chapter 1457: Terrified
Chapter 1457: Terrified
Now that Babbage had brought up the issue at the International Wizarding Confederation's meeting, they couldn't simply brush it off as they had in the past. After all, they had their reputations and positions to consider.
No, to be precise, if word of this spread throughout Europe and the entire wizarding world, they would be disgraced and forced out of their positions.
So, they needed to take action.
As for how to resolve the issues within the British wizarding community, that would be up to the people present at this meeting to decide.
In order to avoid any blame, the International Wizarding Confederation swiftly assembled an investigative team to secretly infiltrate Britain and verify the truth behind Babbage's claims.
Given the seriousness of the matter, they couldn't simply take someone's word for it.
Of course, sending a team to Britain also served to buy them some time.
The back-and-forth travel, the investigation, and the process of finding members of the resistance would undoubtedly consume a significant amount of time, especially considering the difficulty of the task.
Who knew how long that investigative team would take?
However, things turned out to be smoother than they had anticipated.
Britain, a land left completely undefended, allowed three French Aurors disguised as Dark Wizards to easily infiltrate.
Or, to put it bluntly, they entered the country without any hindrance.
The trio headed straight for Diagon Alley, the most famous wizarding shopping district in Britain, hoping to glean some insights into the situation from what used to be a bustling trade street.
"Damn, it's chaotic here," remarked the youngest of the three wizards, taking in the dense cluster of stalls.
"The more chaotic it is, the better. The question is whether we can make any profit from this," Victor Hugo, their leader, cleverly covered for his colleague's inappropriate comment.
They stopped at a stall selling prohibited items, picking up a unicorn horn to inspect it before inquiring about the price. Then, feigning dissatisfaction with the cost, they placed the horn back on the stall and continued browsing through Diagon Alley, occasionally stopping to chat with the stall owners and gather some information.
Although they had been instructed to prioritize their own safety above all else before coming to Britain, as professional Aurors, Victor Hugo and his team still despised the Dark Wizards they encountered. If they had come across such individuals in France, they would have arrested them and doled out severe punishments.
"This place is on the verge of becoming a den for Dark Wizards."
"No, it already is one."
What shocked the trio the most was the Leaky Cauldron at the entrance of Diagon Alley, where they witnessed groups of wizards openly planning robberies.
After a few days of exploration, the French Auror trio gained a whole new perspective on the current state of the British wizarding community.
Wizards here lived in constant fear of being robbed by Dark Wizards.
While there was no shortage of resistors in this land, the so-called broadcasts from the Wizarding Watch were treated as a joke by the Dark Wizards.
To avoid exposing their identities, the trio decided to change their disguises and dine at a Muggle restaurant, using the opportunity to discuss their next move.
The situation in the British wizarding community was undoubtedly worse than they had imagined, with a large number of Dark Wizards congregating here, which explained the rampant chaos.
However, the idea of helping Britain deal with the current turmoil was out of the question.
Victor Hugo and his team weren't in the habit of fighting other people's battles, especially when Britain had its own notorious Dark Wizard to contend with—Voldemort.
That was the biggest problem of all.
In their opinion, as long as Voldemort was eliminated, the chaos in Britain would naturally be resolved. But it wasn't their place as outsiders to take on that task.
After all, no one wanted to die.
Their assigned mission before arriving in Britain was clear: investigate and assess the situation, not eliminate the Dark Wizard.
"It hasn't even been a year since Dumbledore's death, and it's hard to believe that Britain has transformed into what it is now," they mused as they munched on fried potatoes.
"I'm more curious about what the British Ministry of Magic is thinking, allowing the situation to deteriorate like this. Have their Aurors been scared witless?"
"Especially with that damnable fog outside. I even spotted a Dementor flying over our heads."
After witnessing the Dementor, the trio began to contemplate leaving Britain.
"Yes, they've surrendered," a hoarse voice suddenly spoke up, startling the three wizards, who quickly raised their wands, aiming at the source of the voice.
"Calm down, I mean no harm," the voice added.
To their astonishment, a middle-aged man with brown hair sat down at their table, offering a smile as he introduced himself: "Kingsley, Kingsley Shacklebolt."
"How did you find us?" Victor asked, surprised by the man's sudden appearance. Their movements in Britain should have been discreet, so how did this man manage to track them down?
“Mr. Anderson told me. He's a great prophet, so finding you wasn't particularly difficult." Kingsley explained to the trio with a smile. "I found you on the first day, but I didn't get a chance to approach you, so I'm only meeting with you now."
This statement undoubtedly left the three wizards stunned, but the most pressing issue at hand was how to secure more assistance from the International Wizarding Confederation through the trio sitting before them.
"Mr. Anderson, a prophet master?"
The three wizards exchanged glances, their faces showing confusion as it was apparent they had never heard of Albert's surname.
Typically, those bestowed with the title of Prophet Master ought to be rather famous, yet Albert seemed to be an exception.
As for skepticism?
The fact that this fellow had appeared out of thin air made it less likely that he was lying, as there was no need for such deception.
"Mr. Anderson is still very young, so it's understandable if you haven't heard of him."
"Very young?"
"Yes, younger than you might think. Now, follow me, and I'll take you to the villages destroyed by Death Eaters and the hidden army of Inferi." Kingsley stood up from his seat and asked, "You came to Britain to verify the truth of the information in my letter, right?"
"Yes, to be honest, we were quite startled."
"Why has Britain become what it is today?"
The youngest of the three wizards couldn't help but ask, "What has your Ministry of Magic been doing?"
"Ever since the former Minister of Magic, Scrimgeour, chose to duel with the Dark Lord to save the lives of the Aurors, the entire Ministry has fallen under the control of the Death Eaters." Kingsley glanced at the wizard and said self-deprecatingly, "I know you must think Scrimgeour's decision was foolish, but at the time, there were no other options. It was either Scrimgeour's life or everyone fighting the Dark Lord and his followers and dying together. Scrimgeour chose the former, and he was a remarkable man."
"Indeed, not many could have done the same." Victor sigated.
"But those Aurors whose lives were spared did not continue to resist the Dark Lord as expected. Instead, they lost their courage and submitted to him. Only a small handful of Aurors bravely stood up to resist."
The three wizards fell silent, realizing that the situation in Britain was even worse than they had imagined, having almost turned into a lair for Dark Wizards.
This was undoubtedly a dire sign.
"Those cowards, it's outright betrayal."
"Yes, but how could Scrimgeour have foreseen that his sacrifice would be met with betrayal?" Kingsley said self-deprecatingly.
"Of course, the situation isn't entirely hopeless. We've united those with courage, and we possess considerable resistance strength. However, to counter the Dark Lord and prevent the killing of innocent Muggles, we still need the help of the International Wizarding Confederation."
Subsequently, Kingsley described in detail the grim situation in Britain to his companions, leading them to the villages destroyed by the Death Eaters and showing them the unfortunate Muggles who had been turned into Inferi.
"Currently, we know of dozens of villages that have been transformed by the Death Eaters in this way. Once winter passes, those Muggles won't be able to remain oblivious." Kingsley helplessly stated another reason for seeking help from the International Wizarding Confederation.
"Haven't you tried to stop them?"
"Yes, more than once, but to no great effect. They've even used those opportunities to ambush us, forcing us to retreat for the time being." Kingsley said helplessly, "We brought this matter to the attention of the International Wizarding Confederation several months ago, but they ignored us until now, finally sending you over."
After marveling at the wonders of Felix Felicis in his heart, Kingsley continued to vigorously persuade the group before him.
Regardless, it was imperative to convince foreign wizards to join their cause and divert the Death Eaters' attention.
This wasn't really a deception, as the Death Eaters were indeed ruthless and had committed heinous crimes in this land.
"Do you really think this will work?"
After Kingsley had seen the investigative team off, Sirius Black's figure appeared out of thin air, watching their departing backs and commenting, "They seem to be 'terrified.'"
"I don't know, but we truly need more help." Kingsley whispered, "Even if it's just to divert the Death Eaters' attention away from those poor Muggles."
If he wasn't afraid of leading them to their deaths, Kingsley would have loved to take them on a tour under the Death Eaters' noses, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the Death Eaters.
However, before Kingsley could begin plotting this devious plan, he was pleasantly surprised to find that the three wizards seemed to have already encountered trouble.
