Chapter 145: Ruin Town
Chapter 145: Ruin Town (Monthly Vote Requested)
Martial Dao Calendar, April 23, 2046
The next morning at 8 a.m. at the United Training Base, the sky stretched clear and cloudless. On the wide plaza below the dormitory building, clusters of students dressed in crisp uniforms gathered, backpacks slung over their shoulders.
“Did you hear? Lin Qi snapped the Training Spear in the Martial Arts Hall last night.”
“Snapped it? You sure he didn’t break it in a fight?” someone asked curiously.
“No, just wore it down through pure practice. Can you believe the power he’s got?”
“Whoa! What kind of strength does that take to snap a spear like that?” A student widened his eyes in shock.
The murmurs spread outward like ripples.
Among the students from Tianhai No. 2 High School, Jiang Tao nudged Lin Qi with a grin.
“Brother Qi, looks like everyone’s talking about your spear-breaking feat.”
The group around them exchanged glances of admiration. The sheer strength required to snap a steel spear was staggering.
Lin Qi remained unfazed. The broken training spear didn’t cost him anything to replace—it was the sudden notoriety that irked him.
A deep rumble cut through the air. Rows of olive-green Imperial Military transport trucks rolled into the plaza.
“Form lines! Twenty per vehicle!” barked a burly officer, his voice echoing.
Students shuffled onto the trucks. Inside, Lin Qi settled into a black leather seat beside his classmates from Tianhai No. 2. He pulled a file from his bag, flipping through pages to review. Others followed suit, some scrolling through e-books on tablets.
“The moment the Spatial Gate opens, Disaster Beasts will flood out,” Qiu Jie said. “They’re drawn to humans like prey.”
“First- and second-level beasts in Zone One, third-level in Zone Two. We’re all Tendon Cultivation disciples—let’s stick to Zone One.”
“This Spatial Gate tech’s insane, though,” Jiang Tao mused. “Who built something that can control space itself?”
Li Zhou interjected, “History says the first Disaster Beasts came through space rifts—random tears in reality. No warning. Cities fell overnight.”
“Then twenty years ago, Bam—this tech just appeared. We learned to contain the rifts, redirect them.”
“A miracle,” someone sighed. Lin Qi wondered the same. His mind flickered to the Vermin Race—their rumored technological edge.
---
Thirty minutes later, the trucks groaned to a halt. Towering steel structures loomed ahead, swallowing sunlight. The convoy passed through gleaming alloy gates into a warzone.
“Ruin Town! Disembark!”
Students spilled onto the cracked pavement. The air reeked of oil, metal, and old blood. Clad in silver-gray armor, a fortress loomed behind them.
“Collect your gear!” ordered an officer.
Nearby, nine zones buzzed with activity. Electronic screens hovered above stacks of weapon crates.
At the Tianhai City station, Wang Qiufeng strode past, a Wildgoose Saber gleaming in his grip. He paused by Lin Qi.
“Looking forward to going head-to-head today,” he smirked.
“Try not to disappoint,” Lin Qi shot back.
Wang laughed as he left.
“Lin Qi!” a soldier called. Handing him a black metal case, he added, “Your Smartwatch: red for rescue, yellow for the Points Leaderboard and map, green to deploy drones. Stay safe.”
“And your spear,” another soldier grunted, hefting a pitch-black polearm. A 100-pound monstrosity, it dwarfed his frame.
Inside the barracks, Lin Qi swapped into sleek black combat gear—boots, pants, vest, and jacket. A med-pack hugged his spine. He gripped the unadorned black spear, its matte surface reflecting nothing.
---
In a command center, Yuan Ji stood on a circular dais. “Open the Spatial Gate,” he ordered.
Machines whirred. Outside, a colossal cylindrical device hummed to life. A tower of light erupted skyward, warping space into a swirling portal.
“Hssk! Hssk!”
“Roar!”
Shadows burst from the vortex, slamming onto the ground. Dust plumed.
On the central plaza, Yuan Ji’s hologram flickered. His voice rang out:
“Students! Today, you face humanity’s greatest threat—Disaster Beasts. This is your first trial: spill their blood to forge your transformation! Strike true! Pierce their throats, sever their heads, and claim your place as warriors!”
The crowd’s pulse quickened.
“Points will be tallied via your Smartwatches. Top 500 earn ¥100,000. Top 100, ¥300,000. First place… ¥3 million!”
A screen lit up with rankings. The hunt was on.
