Chapter 144: The Invisible Thestral (First Update)
Chapter 144: The Invisible Thestral (First Update)
Riding a small boat across the Black Lake to Hogwarts Castle is a tradition only for first-year students. Normally, young wizards start their school year by riding in self-guided carriages.
Right now, Jerry is sitting in one of these self-guided carriages with Hermione and a few other young wizards, heading from Hogsmeade Station to the entrance of Hogwarts Castle.
However, while the other young wizards might think the carriage moves on its own, Jerry can see that it is being pulled by a magical creature.
Jerry, of course, knows what this creature is, as he has specifically looked up information about it in the library.
It is a branch of the hippogriff family, a magical creature marked with a certain level of rarity—the Thestral.
Thestrals look emaciated, with dragon-like faces and bat-like wings. Only those who have witnessed death and understand it can see their presence.
Since Jerry has died once and has taken several lives, he can clearly see them.
Jerry has always been quite interested in Thestrals, primarily because they are the fastest mounts in the entire magical world.
They are even faster than the best flying broom, the Firebolt.
Traveling from Hogwarts to London by the Hogwarts Express takes half a day, but riding a Thestral would take only a short time.
Moreover, they have a talent similar to owls, but instead of finding a person by name, they can find a location by name, even if they have never been there before. It's quite magical.
However, Thestrals are rare in the magical world and are very difficult to tame. Hogwarts has so many Thestrals pulling carriages thanks to Hagrid, the master of magical creatures.
He successfully tamed the first batch of Thestrals and helped them multiply to their current numbers.
In the magical world, there are many ways to travel: Apparition, Floo Powder, Portkeys, flying spells, flying brooms, flying cars, motorcycles, and hippogriffs, among others. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Apparition is like instant teleportation, but you can only Apparate to places you have been to before, and the farther the distance, the more magical power it consumes.
Floo Powder requires you to establish a Floo Network and have a fireplace.
Portkeys are point-to-point teleportation devices that can cover vast distances, even across countries, but you need two Portkeys, and one must be placed at your destination in advance.
The flying spell is the only way to fly without any magical items. Created by Voldemort, it is known only to Voldemort and Snape. It is extremely difficult to master, very fast, and highly draining of magical power.
Flying brooms are slow but simple and widely used. They can be problematic in bad weather, as they can easily be blown off course or struck by lightning.
Flying cars and motorcycles are generally comfortable and can carry multiple people, but they violate Ministry of Magic laws and can only be used covertly.
Normal hippogriffs are generally slow and are mostly used for flying carriages, but they look grand and impressive.
Special hippogriffs like Thestrals are incredibly fast but are rare and difficult to tame.
Currently, Jerry only has a regular flying broom, which means he has to use a plane for longer trips in the Main World.
That's why he is considering whether he can acquire a Thestral for his use in the Main World.
However, taming a thestral is no easy task, and I'll need to spend more time consulting with Hagrid.
The carriage passed through the Hogwarts gates and stopped on the lawn. Jerry, Hermione, and the other young wizards who were returning to school stepped back into the castle.
"Jerry, you've grown so much in just half a month!"
The first thing Harry and Ron said upon seeing Jerry was their surprise at his sudden height increase.
Jerry used to be about the same height as the two of them, but after the Christmas holiday, which lasted two weeks, he was noticeably taller. This left them somewhat taken aback.
"Yeah, I didn't even notice until you mentioned it!"
After Ron and Harry pointed it out, Hermione immediately stood face-to-face with Jerry and used her hand to compare their heights. She then realized that Jerry was indeed taller than her by about half a forehead.
"Everyone grows at different times. Some grow early, some grow late. I guess I'm one of the early ones, so I'm just hitting my growth spurt now. You're just a bit behind, that's all!"
Jerry said this to reassure them.
There was no helping it. To Harry and the others, they had only been apart for half a month, but to Jerry, it had been over three months.
Two weeks during the Christmas holiday, over a month spent in the Main World Panel upgrading, and another month in the Second Minor World with the cooldown period. Altogether, it added up to more than three months.
At his age, three months can make a significant difference.
It's like when you start middle school, and after a summer break, you notice that some of your elementary school classmates have changed noticeably in height and appearance.
After hearing Jerry's explanation, Harry and Ron didn't dwell on it too much, but they couldn't hide their envious expressions.
For boys, height is a big deal, and every boy wants to be taller than his peers.
Next, Harry and Ron started talking about the interesting things that happened while they were at Hogwarts for Christmas.
For example, on Christmas Day, Hogwarts held a grand Christmas feast with all sorts of delicious food, piles of wizarding fireworks, and a snowball battle among the young wizards. Harry also received a precious invisibility cloak.
In short, Harry and Ron's Christmas at Hogwarts seemed very exciting, and Hermione was so intrigued that she expressed her desire to spend Christmas at Hogwarts next year to try it out.
Jerry, however, didn't have much interest in Harry's invisibility cloak.
Now that he had mastered the Disillusionment Charm, the invisibility cloak seemed like an unnecessary item to him.
To be honest, Jerry didn't think much of the so-called Deathly Hallows in the Harry Potter world.
Once you learn the Disguise Charm, the invisibility cloak becomes almost useless. Its invisibility effect isn't much stronger than the Disguise Charm, and Dumbledore could easily see through Harry even when he was wearing the cloak.
Besides, wearing an invisibility cloak isn't as comfortable as being invisible directly.
The Resurrection Stone is even less useful, as it can't truly bring someone back to life and might even kill the person using it.
The Elder Wand is somewhat better, as it can amplify the power of magic, but it's only slightly more powerful than a regular wand. It doesn't offer a significant boost, and it can easily attract the attention of dark wizards.
In the story of the three brothers, the eldest brother was killed and his wand stolen because he boasted about the Elder Wand's power.
