Chapter 144: On the Way

Something to do? Liam and the other young Wizards looked baffled. However, they followed the professor's instructions and sat down at the long tables according to their year, all eyes on the professor.
Professor Sprout waved her wand, and a scroll and a quill appeared in front of each student. "The teachers have already informed you that you need to self-study Spanish, so let's start with a test to see how well you've done."
Thank goodness, Liam had been busy researching magic and hadn't had time to study languages. But he had luck on his side, as the language memory implant he received in the Radiation World included Spanish.
Naturally, with his cheat, Liam easily aced the language test. After collecting the scrolls, Professor Sprout used her wand to levitate a blackboard in front of the class, preparing to give them a lesson.
Liam had initially thought that this year's educational trip would be busy enough with attending classes at Castrobrusso and self-studying Hogwarts' textbooks. He hadn't expected there would be additional things to learn.
For instance, on the train, they needed to study etiquette, common herbs and their uses in the Amazon region, and even some unique South American attack magic.
Attack magic? Wasn't this supposed to be an academic exchange? Etiquette made sense, to avoid any faux pas during the exchange. And since Castrobrusso specialized in magical plants, it was useful to know their expertise. But why attack magic? It sounded like they might be getting into a fight.
Seeing everyone's confusion, Professor Kettleburn tapped his wooden leg with his wand and said, "You are all top students from your respective years, so there are some things you need to know. In the Wizarding world, strength is a crucial part. Our headmaster, Dumbledore, as one of the most powerful White Wizards, is a key reason why our school has been dominant for decades.
So, during this visit, friendly sparring with students from other schools is inevitable. Therefore, I will teach you some self-defense techniques on the way. Lastly, I know there are some tensions between the houses at school, but I hope you can maintain unity during this activity."
At that moment, Liam recalled that Kettleburn was a daredevil, having set a record of 62 detentions during his tenure as a teacher. Like Hagrid, he had a penchant for dangerous magical creatures, often getting into trouble because of it. This year, he retired with only half a leg and one arm. If not for the importance of this exchange and Dumbledore's personal request for him to help out for the semester, he would likely be at the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary, interacting with those dangerous creatures.
However, this also indicated that, despite his injuries, his ability to survive decades of dealing with dangerous magical creatures likely made him no less capable in combat than many elite Aurors. Thus, his appointment as one of the lead teachers for this trip suggested that the exchange might not be entirely peaceful.
After the first class, they had a quick meal. The food wasn't as good as what they had at school, but it was much better than the boxed meals Liam had on trains in his previous life. For a simple meal on the road, it was quite decent, far superior to instant noodles.
Professor Sprout checked with the driver at the front of the train after the meal and then informed the young Wizards that they would arrive in Castrobrusso by dusk the next day.
Since the journey wasn't long, both professors pulled out all the stops, trying to cram as much knowledge into the students' heads as possible. By the time the classes ended at 9:30 PM, every student's face showed extreme fatigue.
After the classes, the two professors opened the door and returned to their rooms. At that moment, a sixth-year Slytherin girl stood up, her badge on her robe marking her as a Prefect.
She walked to one end of the carriage and addressed all the students, "I know our house might not be very popular, and we don't particularly like students from other houses. But this time, we all represent Hogwarts, so I hope we can set aside our conflicts during this exchange. Let's unite and show those Castrobrusso students what we're made of."
Her words were met with a moment of silence. Then, a sixth-year Ravenclaw student stepped forward, shook her hand, and said, "You're right, good luck." Everyone followed suit, shaking her hand and showing a united front.
As the students returned to their respective carriages, they didn't notice two professors standing out of sight, watching them with a sense of relief.
Clearly, the exchange between magic schools wasn't just about interaction; it was also a form of competition. Since it was a competition, there had to be winners and losers. To achieve victory, the students from the four houses, who often had deep-seated conflicts, began to try to unite. While the collaboration wasn't entirely smooth, it was at least a good start.
This situation was partly due to the fact that in houses like Ravenclaw and Slytherin, where there were more Purebloods, students from major Pureblood families often had ambitions beyond their studies and spent a lot of time building social networks. As a result, they weren't always the top performers academically. The Pureblood students participating in this exchange were from smaller, more marginalized Wizarding families and didn't have as strong racial prejudices. This made it easier for everyone to unite.
In theory, long journeys in the Wizarding World were often enjoyable. However, none of the students felt particularly happy on this trip. The outside view was just a monotonous blue sky and white clouds, with no scenery to admire. They also had to endure intense studies, and the food was extremely bland, lacking the delicious meals prepared by House-Elves.
Fortunately, this tedious period didn't last long. The next day, when the clock in the common room started playing music, Professor Sprout told everyone to change into their dress robes, as they were about to reach their destination.
Liam's dress robes were a deep navy blue. When he finished dressing and stepped out of his room, he saw Hermione emerging from the adjacent room. She was wearing a pale yellow gown that made her look much more radiant than usual.
In the common room, Professor Sprout, dressed in a brown silk gown, called out, "Everyone, form two lines by year, and follow Professor Kettleburn and me when we disembark. Check each other's clothes to make sure everything is in order."
Then, Professor Sprout selected Zhang Qiu and another fifth-year Slytherin boy, giving each of them a silver instrument that Liam had never seen before. She instructed them to present these gifts to the Castrobrusso headmaster after the two professors had greeted them.
Even in the Wizarding World, the tradition of exchanging gifts, similar to the Muggle world, was still observed. Luckily, the overall appearance of Wizards was generally good, so Professor Sprout could select representatives who wouldn't tarnish Hogwarts' image.
After about ten minutes, as everyone grew slightly impatient, the train began to slow down, and a sensation of weightlessness followed.
A few minutes later, after a slight jolt, the carriage came to a complete stop. They had arrived at Castrobrusso.
