Chapter 1439: Ambush
Chapter 1439: Ambush
Looking at the decoys in front of them who were dead and wounded, the Death Eaters had complex expressions on their faces. A few days ago, when Yaxley had proposed this plan during the meeting, many of the Death Eaters present had scoffed at the idea, believing that with the Dark Lord's personal involvement, there was no need to worry about the Mudblood and his followers.
However, from the current situation, it was undoubtedly a very wise decision. Whether it was the Defense Association or those damn Mudbloods, they were not opponents to be taken lightly.
"Kill them all, leave none alive!"
Looking at the group of people in the village who were still defending themselves against the onslaught of spells, Voldemort's eyes narrowed. He knew that Yaxley's plan was not bad. Ordinary people, when faced with a sudden ambush like this, would definitely be thrown into chaos and suffer heavy casualties.
Even he would have to retreat in the face of such a curse bombardment.
However, the reaction of these people completely took Voldemort by surprise. Instead of panicking, they calmly gathered together and erected a magical barrier to withstand the Death Eaters' relentless attack. It was something they couldn't even imagine, as even the best Aurors from the Ministry of Magic wouldn't be able to remain as calm and collected as these people.
This made Voldemort even more determined to kill them all, even though there were quite a few pure-bloods among them.
He knew that even if he killed Albert Anderson, the Mudblood, the probability of these people surrendering to him was minuscule. Instead, they would become a huge nuisance.
Since they were a problem, the natural solution was to get rid of them.
"Yes, my Lord!"
The Death Eaters were a little surprised, but they quickly accepted the order. After all, the ones dying weren't them.
Having learned their lesson from the previous painful experience, none of them wanted to repeat the same mistake. They had no choice but to use their own two legs to sprint towards their target, a mode of transportation that was undoubtedly much slower.
Fortunately, the barrage of spells from behind did not stop, buying the Death Eaters precious time as they approached the village.
But...
"Ah!"
As the group of Death Eaters neared the outskirts of the village, they too encountered some trouble.
In preparation for the Death Eaters' invasion, members of the Defense Association, following Albert's instructions, had set up a large number of bear traps on the outskirts of the village.
Now, with the night at its darkest and the surrounding area pitch-black, the bear traps were concealed by the freshly fallen snow. The overconfident Death Eaters naturally didn't pay attention to their footing and stepped right into the traps that had been set up for them. The outcome was predictable.
A large number of Death Eaters fell victim to the enemy's despicable traps and were now howling in pain, clutching their injured legs.
Their piercing screams startled those who were running behind them.
The Death Eaters stopped in their tracks upon discovering the bear traps and cursed the enemy for their underhanded tactics. However, none of them dared to venture forward recklessly anymore.
Being caught in one of those traps was no joke, and even though they could heal their injuries with spells afterward, not many Death Eaters were willing to take the risk. Who knew what other traps lay ahead, waiting for them?
Knowing the despicable tactics of that Mudblood, it was certain that there would be more traps ahead, and most of the newly recruited Death Eaters were unwilling to gamble with their lives.
"A bunch of useless fools!"
Voldemort paid no heed to the wailing Death Eaters around him. He raised his wand and forcefully created a path forward, his figure resembling a giant bat as he glided through the air.
Several veteran Death Eaters followed closely behind Voldemort, making their way towards the heart of the village.
As for those unfortunate souls who had stepped into the traps, no one had the time to care about their fate. They were left to their misery, their agonized screams adding a touch of color to the quiet night.
As soon as Voldemort and his followers entered the village, their path was blocked by a group of knight statues holding shields.
The Death Eaters flanking Voldemort immediately waved their wands, attempting to blast the statues out of their way and clear a path for their master. However, their efforts were in vain.
The spells they cast were deflected by the shields held by the statues and rebounded towards Voldemort and his group. Voldemort casually waved his wand, and the rebounded spells exploded in a crater in the snow.
Voldemort and his companions were forced to halt their advance as the knight statue swung its Fracture-inducing sword at them.
Although the display was intimidating, it had no real effect on them.
After all, these statues were merely cannon fodder meant to buy time. As long as they could make the invaders stop and deal with them, they had already served their purpose.
Of course, that was the extent of their usefulness.
Voldemort quickly tore the knight statues to pieces.
When Voldemort and his group finally arrived at the site of the fierce battle, they found that most of the people had already disappeared. Only a few young male witches remained with Albert Anderson, maintaining the magical barrier that was deflecting the spell bombardment. At their feet, a house-elf holding a briefcase was looking at Voldemort, who had just arrived, with fearful eyes. Before Voldemort and his group could react, the house-elf quickly disappeared with the remaining witches, using the Disapparition spell.
"I'm surprised you didn't run away."
Voldemort looked at Albert, who had stayed behind to cover their escape, a cruel smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Run away? I think 'tactical retreat' is a more appropriate term."
Albert corrected him with a smile, his wand slowly rising. Even in the face of the infamous Dark Lord and his Death Eaters, he remained calm and composed. "This was a brilliant plan. I must admit, your ambush caught us off guard. If it had been anyone else, I doubt they would have survived."
As he spoke, Albert's lips curved upward, and he added softly, "However, most of the witches and wizards you used as bait were killed by your own spells. I wonder, will those dark witches and wizards still be willing to cooperate with you?"
The more composed Albert seemed, the more vigilant the others became, as if they were the ones being surrounded.
"Kill him!"
Voldemort intended to make sure Albert never left this place alive.
This was a perfect spot to ensure that there would be no escape, not even through Disapparition.
Just as Voldemort was about to make his move, Albert was even faster. Several metal balls dropped to the ground, instantly exploding in front of them, releasing a dazzling white light that forced the Death Eaters to shield their eyes. In that brief moment, Albert raised his wand and unleashed a series of spells, enveloping all his enemies in front of him.
As the white light faded, Voldemort heard a series of thuds as the Death Eaters who had accompanied him were knocked to the ground by Albert's spells. The damn Mudblood, however, still stood there, his eyes calm as he stared at Voldemort.
"Now that there are no more interruptions, if you intend to challenge me to a duel..." Before Albert could finish his sentence, Voldemort had already made his move.
"Avada Kedavra!"
