Chapter 143: Ambush!
Chapter 143: Ambush!
"What should we do with this guy? Should we just kill him?"
Nightingale glanced at the lifeless Yue Shan, who stood behind them like a puppet.
Her tone was noticeably lighter.
This trip had earned them a whopping 900,000, enough to cover several missions.
But this money wasn't meant to be spent freely.
"Wait."
Jiang Cheng quickly interjected, "We haven't found out who's behind him yet."
"Okay."
Nightingale repeated Jiang Cheng's words.
"It's Gao Songbai from the Law Enforcement Team."
Yue Shan blurted out, "But he's just a messenger. The real mastermind is someone high up in the Law Enforcement Bureau."
The woman beside him wanted to cover her ears, but it was too late.
She knew all too well the consequences of hearing what she shouldn't have.
"The Law Enforcement Bureau," Jiang Cheng muttered the three words.
As the name suggested, this department was responsible for maintaining order in the city, even in the slums.
But the situation in the slums was self-explanatory.
"Knowing this doesn't really make a difference."
Nightingale spoke slowly, "Even if you eliminate the people from the Law Enforcement Bureau one by one, there will still be many who slip through the net. Moreover, they are a significant force against us. Sooner or later, you'll come face to face with them."
"Knowing is better than not knowing."
Jiang Cheng smiled.
He made a mental note of Gao Songbai's name.
As the saying goes, when you do something good, do it to the end.
The leader of the Wild Wolf Gang, the deputy leader, and even this gang leader were just accomplices. How could he let the true mastermind get away?
Moreover, if a gang leader had a million on him, the mastermind would have even more. But taking down these guys would be challenging, so it was best to start with the one named Gao.
"Take care of him and them."
Jiang Cheng's eyes flashed with determination, momentarily revealing the hidden resentment in both their eyes.
There was no room for luck, especially since their conversation had revealed his origins in the slums.
Nightingale nodded.
The woman woke up, trying to scream for help.
Several steel needles pierced through the chests of the captives.
The mother and daughter duo grimaced in pain, soon losing their breath.
Yue Shan suddenly jolted awake, feeling a sharp pain in his chest.
"No, please."
He pleaded, his face filled with desperation as he reached out, trying to grasp something.
But the person before him merely stared coldly.
"Help, help, I don't want to die..."
Yue Shan shed tears.
All he wanted was to survive in this cruel world. What was wrong with that?
If he didn't form the Wild Wolf Gang and exploit others, other gangs would come to exploit him. So, he might as well exploit others instead.
Darkness engulfed him like a tidal wave, drowning him completely.
Jiang Cheng took one last look at the corpses in the room and sighed. He breathed in deeply and followed Nightingale to the door.
Yue Shan had received the fate he deserved.
But was delayed justice still justice? Jiang Cheng sighed, relieved that this trip's earnings were decent. Even as a bystander, he had managed to earn 100,000, which could speed up the progress of his Lotus Meditation Technique by half.
Nightingale peered through the peephole at the door, just in time to see several guards passing by.
She waited for a while, then opened the door and stepped out onto the road after the guards had turned the corner.
"Let's go to Coke's place first. He'll send us out, and when we get back to headquarters, we'll count the money. I'll give you your share."
Nightingale emphasized the last four words.
"Okay."
Jiang Cheng couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
Suddenly, Nightingale's expression changed, and she pushed Jiang Cheng aside, shouting, "Quick, hide!"
In an instant, Jiang Cheng felt something fly over his head, hitting the trees and walls behind him with a series of loud cracks.
Nightingale's body began to glow with white light, a sign of her defensive items activating.
"There's a marksman!" Jiang Cheng's mind raced as he quickly dove for cover, searching for something to shield himself.
The road was wide open, and even if there was cover, it was just low bushes, useless against the sniper. His only option was to retreat towards the houses and use the walls or dash inside.
Jiang Cheng dodged and hid behind one of the stone pillars at the entrance, one side open to the spacious gate and the other shielded by a low wall, barely enough to cover his body.
Just as he hid, he stumbled, as if hit by a bullet in the back. Fortunately, the Iron Wall Charm activated, and a white light flashed over his body, keeping him safe. But the charm had lost its effect.
"Damn it!" Jiang Cheng felt both lucky and furious.
The 30,000 yuan bounty was gone just like that! He drew his handgun, ready to return fire, but as he peeked out, a bullet struck the stone pillar, sending sparks flying.
"Don't go out there!" Nightingale's voice sounded from the side.
At some point, she had hidden behind the other stone pillar, her shoulder bleeding profusely.
"Are you hurt?" Jiang Cheng was shocked.
"It's just a minor wound," Nightingale shook her head, her hand pressing down on her shoulder, covered in blood.
"I'm sorry," Jiang Cheng felt a surge of guilt.
If it weren't for her pushing him away at the critical moment, those bullets might have hit him.
Even with the Iron Wall Charm, it couldn't block so many bullets.
As a result, Nightingale had been shot multiple times, and her defensive items were probably depleted.
"Don't worry about it," Nightingale remained calm. "There's a sniper with a heavy sniper rifle. He shattered my Vajra Talisman with a single shot. He's probably on the second floor of the house, aiming at us. Don't make any rash moves."
"Aside from him, there are a few others with handguns. If they were Fifth Rank Force Warriors, we could charge through the bullets, but I'm not. This wound was from a rifle bullet, luckily just my shoulder."
Jiang Cheng's face turned grim as he listened.
What if he had been alone or with a weaker partner? What would have happened then?
"They know we're hiding here. They'll come soon. As long as they enter my mental sensing range, I can kill them."
"How far is your mental sensing range?" Jiang Cheng asked urgently.
Nightingale paused before answering, "Thirty meters."
Jiang Cheng fell silent.
He didn't think the enemy was that foolish.
To approach with guns from the front and enter Nightingale's 30-meter attack range seemed unwise.
If he were in their shoes, he'd surround the area from multiple directions. If someone approached from the side, they'd easily spot them hiding behind the pillars.
As for running...
"Nightingale, if you want to escape, can you get away?" Jiang Cheng asked.
After all, the enemy included a Fifth Rank Mind Master, and even with a strength and speed gap compared to a Fifth Rank Force Warrior, it wouldn't be by much.
Plus, there were steel needles controlled by mental power protecting vital points.
"The chances are high. If I run with you, we might both make it," Nightingale nodded. "But I'll do my best to get us both out of here. If you die here, I'll recover from my injuries and avenge you."
"Then I truly owe you," Jiang Cheng said.
"It's my duty," Nightingale replied.
Jiang Cheng took a deep breath.
"Nightingale, I have a way to deal with them, but I need your help."
