Chapter 1429: Astonishment
Chapter 1429: Astonishment
It was going to be a long night.
Being rudely awakened from sleep is never pleasant, but for Yaxley, the current exception.
"The prey has finally taken the bait," Yaxley muttered.
"Yes," replied the excited Death Eater who had been tasked with delivering the news. "Our people have moved according to plan, and they should be able to temporarily block them on the tenth floor underground."
"Hmm, don't alert them yet. Gather all the Death Eaters and send them to the Ministry immediately. This time, we must catch those scoundrels," Yaxley added as he draped his cloak over his shoulders. "Also, inform our new Minister, Mr. Thicknesse, to bring Aurors for assistance. We must not let them escape, not after all we've endured."
"What about Lord Voldemort? Should we notify him?"
The Death Eater hesitated, unsure if he should involve the Dark Lord. After all, if Albert Anderson showed up at the Ministry, they would need his power. Otherwise, it was uncertain if the Death Eaters alone could match him.
"There's no need to disturb the Dark Lord until we confirm the mudblood's presence at the Ministry," Yaxley decided after a moment's hesitation. He was well aware of the terrible consequences of bothering the Dark Lord without a clear understanding of the situation.
Thanks to prior arrangements, Yaxley's actions were highly efficient. Within minutes, he appeared in the Ministry office via the Floo network. As he rushed toward the Great Hall, a wizard approached him with an update.
"The employees assigned to night watch have been found, but they seem to be under a Stunning Spell that doesn't respond to regular counter-curses. They remain unconscious," the wizard reported.
Yaxley, indifferent to their fate, asked the older wizard beside him, "How many of us are here?"
"About a dozen, I believe," Walton MacNair replied grimly. The number of Death Eaters who had arrived promptly was far fewer than they had anticipated.
When had the Death Eaters become so inefficient, or were they deliberately stalling?
The others would likely cry foul at MacNair's thoughts, arguing that the Death Eaters had never been particularly efficient. The only reason they were functioning at their current level was due to the pressure from the Defense Association.
However, this was far from satisfactory.
MacNair hesitated to act prematurely due to their lack of numbers, fearing that it might alert the enemy and cause them to attempt a breakout.
The intruders must have brought a sizable force to dare to infiltrate the Ministry in the middle of the night. Following past precedents, they were probably looking at a group of at least twenty.
With just a handful of Death Eaters present, there was no way they could stop the enemy if they decided to rush out and take them by surprise.
"We need more hands, and let's not alert them yet," Yaxley said rationally, opting not to send the Death Eaters into a direct confrontation. Who knew what might happen if they sent them into harm's way?
Unfortunately, their current squad was woefully inadequate, whether facing the Order of the Phoenix or the Defense Association.
Sometimes, Yaxley wished he could train those useless Death Eaters the way Aurors were trained. But he knew such wishes were in vain.
However, Yaxley was unaware that their supposedly covert operation had already been exposed, thanks to Albert's surveillance.
"What did you ask her to do?" Kingsly asked in confusion as he watched Umbridge walk away. They were in the process of moving people into the boxes.
"The Death Eaters are outside," Albert replied.
"What?! How is that possible?! We've been so discreet, and yet they detected us so quickly. This must be a trap!" Kingsly exclaimed in shock.
"They're probably still waiting for more of their people to arrive. They'll likely storm in together soon," Albert said calmly, as if he had anticipated all of this.
"So, you're sending Umbridge to buy us time?" Kingsly guessed Albert's intention but still felt perplexed. "But will that really work?"
"I don't know. How many are left?" Albert checked his pocket watch. Nearly ten minutes had passed.
If it were any other day, their progress would be considered swift. But with the enemy already at their doorstep, the anticipated fifteen minutes might be too slow.
"They should be here soon. Those bastards deliberately spread out, causing us quite a delay," Kingsly said as he prepared to head to the passage to buy some time for the others.
When he arrived, he was astonished to see Umbridge stripping off her clothes in the corridor leading upstairs and then breaking into a scandalous dance without an ounce of shame. It was almost too much for his eyes to bear.
"This..." Kingsly stood there, mouth agape. It took him a moment to recover, and he eventually retreated silently.
He figured Albert's strategy might work. At the very least, when the Death Eaters charged into the passage and witnessed this spectacle, they would undoubtedly be stunned.
It was just too horrifying.
Indeed, Kingsly's guess was correct.
The Aurors, urged by Yaxley to investigate the situation, were left dumbfounded by the sight of Umbridge, clad in scant undergarments, performing a risque dance. Many of them even questioned if they were still asleep and having a nightmare.
Umbridge's erotic dance was quite a shock to the Ministry's Aurors, and it took them a long while to recover. They exchanged bewildered glances, unsure of their next course of action.
The most sensible thing to do would be to knock Umbridge unconscious and proceed deeper into the courtroom to capture the bold intruders who had dared to breach the Ministry. However, as most Aurors were reluctant to work for the Death Eaters, they decided to report the matter to their boss, Minister Thicknesse, and let him make the decision.
Thus, Minister Thicknesse, along with Yaxley, the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and MacNair, the Director of the Auror Office, led a group of people to assess the situation personally.
And there, they witnessed Umbridge, nearly naked, dancing provocatively in the corridor.
In that moment, they all felt like their eyes had been severely polluted.
"Dolores, what are you doing?" Thicknesse asked, raising his hand to cover his face in dismay.
Those who had accompanied them pointed and whispered, their attention fully captured by Umbridge's bizarre behavior, momentarily forgetting why they were there in the first place.
"She's under the Imperius Curse," Yaxley said, his face twitching. He raised his wand, cast a Stunning Spell on their deputy minister, and then motioned for someone to take her to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. However, no one stepped forward willingly, as if afraid of contracting some terrible disease from her.
