Chapter 1403: Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Chapter 1403: Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Ding Dong! Ding Dong! On a secluded and deserted street one snowy winter night, the abrupt ringing of a doorbell shattered the silence.
Not long after the ringing, there was stirring within the house, accompanied by the occasional meows and scratching at the door. The owner of the house had been startled awake by the insistent chiming of the bell.
"Who is it at this late hour?"
Mrs. Figg, clad in her sleepwear and wrapped in a thick cloak, cautiously peered through the peephole. Recognizing the familiar voices outside, she opened the door and stared in confusion at the group of Order of the Phoenix members gathered at her doorstep.
"I apologize for coming at this hour, but that idiot Mundungus has been captured by Death Eaters, and we cannot be sure how many secrets he might divulge. We believe this place is no longer safe, so we plan to move you to a secure location tonight," explained Mrs. Hestia, stepping forward to clarify the situation to Mrs. Figg.
Mrs. Figg looked bewildered and at a loss.
"Mrs. Figg, we should leave as soon as possible," urged Harry, dispelling his disguise and appearing out of thin air, addressing the dumbfounded Mrs. Figg. "If you have any questions, we can explain everything once we reach a safe place."
"Harry, y-I understand, but I can't leave my cats here!" Although Mrs. Figg was unclear about what was happening, Harry's appearance made her realize the potential danger. She turned and went back inside to gather her belongings, intending to take all her pet cats with her.
Mrs. Figg couldn't bear to leave her beloved pets behind, or they would surely starve.
"We'll help her."
Mrs. Hestia and Hermione followed Mrs. Figg inside to assist with the packing.
Not long after Mrs. Figg had gone inside, all the members of the Order of the Phoenix felt a sudden burning sensation from the detection watches in their pockets—an alert indicating that a Dark wizard or creature was approaching.
"There's only one," someone whispered. "A Dementor, perhaps, or..."
Harry glanced at his own detection watch and then toward a particular corner.
It appeared that only a handful of Order members had arrived, but in reality, they had used Disillusionment Charms to conceal themselves in case Death Eaters showed up unexpectedly.
"I'll take care of it," Kingsley offered, about to move to shoo away the intruder, but Moody grabbed his shoulder.
"What is it?" Kingsley asked, turning in confusion.
"It's...Voldemort," Moody replied, his eyes wide with disbelief at encountering Voldemort in this place.
This statement startled everyone, but after a moment of panic, they drew their wands and fired spells in the direction Moody had indicated.
Moody wouldn't lie, so they had to strike first.
A barrage of spells ripped through the snowy night, illuminating the dark street, and forcing the figure lurking in the shadows to reveal himself.
With the light from their extinguished wands, they finally got a clear look at their enemy—a hooded figure with blood-red eyes.
It was indeed Voldemort.
"Oh, what a delightful surprise to find so many members of the Order of the Phoenix gathered here," Voldemort said, sliding across the snow-covered road, unharmed by the onslaught of spells that had been deflected by his magic.
Voldemort's gaze swept over the group, finally settling on Harry Potter.
"Harry Potter!" he exclaimed. "An unexpected bonus."
"Voldemort," Harry said, pushing through the crowd to face Voldemort directly, ignoring the protests of the others.
"I thought you would continue hiding behind others and watching as they die for you?" Voldemort's voice was soft, but Harry could hear the thick layer of scorn in his words.
Ignoring the taunt, Harry asked, "Why are you here?"
"Why? That's an interesting question," Voldemort replied.
Naturally, Mundungus had no idea where Mrs. Figg lived, but when Voldemort learned that she was also a member of the Order of the Phoenix, he employed some simple means to locate her residence.
And so, the events of this night had unfolded.
However, what surprised Voldemort was how quickly his prey had taken the bait, luring out all the members of the Order of the Phoenix in one go. Even he found it unbelievable.
"That wretched little thief, to ensure his survival, spilled all his secrets. Of course, Voldemort allowed him to live on, perhaps setting a nice example for the rest of you."
Voldemort raised his yew wand, preparing to seize this opportunity to capture the Order of the Phoenix in one fell swoop.
"Let's duel! Just the two of us," Harry suddenly said.
"Oh, how surprising, the famous Harry Potter intends to duel with me," Voldemort said, eyeing Harry up and down. "You're not thinking of pulling a Scrimgeour, are you?"
"Harry!"
Sirius tried to grab Harry, stopping him from rushing to his death.
"Our day to duel to the death will come," Harry said, waving his hand to signal the others to make space for the duel. "Even though it has come sooner than expected, I don't mind."
Of course, Harry was lying, but he knew he had to step up; he would never stand by and watch others die for him.
"Then go to your death, Avada Kedavra!"
The emerald light illuminated Voldemort's hideous face, and before anyone could cry out, Harry had raised his wand, casting the Disarming Charm on Voldemort's Killing Curse.
The two spells met in midair, and Harry's wand began to vibrate violently.
The dueling spells vanished, replaced by a dazzling golden light that connected the two wands.
Voldemort was stunned by this sudden change, his wand trembling in his grip.
The members of the Order of the Phoenix were equally dumbfounded, staring foolishly at the two floating figures caught off guard by this force, utterly confused about what was happening.
"Avada Kedavra!"
An untimely voice suddenly rang out.
A deadly curse flew towards Voldemort without warning. Just as it seemed it would strike him down, Voldemort, who had been holding his wand to face off against Harry, suddenly came to his senses, his eyes falling on the emerald light! The golden light vanished, and Harry fell back to the ground as Voldemort disappeared.
Only the yew wand remained, lying quietly in the snow.
He had fled.
Voldemort had actually run away.
The members of the Order stood there dumbfounded, clearly not processing what had just occurred.
"Are you all idiots? You had a perfect opportunity, and you just stood there gawking!" Moody couldn't help but curse loudly, furious at the Order members for their inaction.
"What just happened?" someone whispered.
"Let's leave this place first. We can discuss it when we're safe," Moody snapped, his anger evident as he chastised the group for their stupidity.
Scolded by Moody, the group realized the magnitude of their mistake and hung their heads in shame.
If it weren't for Moody's use of the Killing Curse to drive Voldemort away, who knows what would have happened tonight.
With Voldemort's power, even if they joined forces, they might not have been able to force him to retreat.
Crack! To everyone's surprise, Harry snapped Voldemort's yew wand in two.
As Dumbledore's wand was rather ordinary and not very handy, Voldemort had been using his original yew wand again.
But no one expected Harry to break it in half.
"This place isn't safe. Let's head back to headquarters first," Harry said, cutting off the hesitant group with a raised hand. He warned, "Be cautious; the Death Eaters might return with the Dark Lord."
To be honest, Harry was disappointed in the others' performance. As Moody said, with Voldemort's power, they wouldn't have been able to drive him away without using some special means. If they hadn't, everyone would have died, and they didn't seem to realize this, standing there foolishly instead.
