Chapter 14: The Last Shall Become First
Chapter 14: The Last Shall Become First
"I'm a little nervous about the first exam. I wonder how difficult it will be," one student remarked.
"I hope it's not too hard. If I don't pass, I'll get a beating when I get home," another student added, a hint of worry in their voice.
"It shouldn't be that bad, right? Teacher Mu Yue gave us practice tests, and the passing grade was quite manageable," a third student offered, trying to reassure the others.
The classroom of Class 1-1 buzzed with nervous energy as many students fretted over their first exam. They feared the questions might be too challenging and that their scores would disappoint their parents.
"Anko and Iruka, are you two nervous as well?" TenTen asked, turning to her friends.
"Why be nervous over a mere exam? Watch me ace it with ease," Anko replied with a playful smile.
"Of course, you're confident. But this time, it's different. The results will be posted publicly," Iruka pointed out, a hint of concern in his voice.
"I'm a bit nervous too," TenTen admitted. "On the last practice test, I only scored eighty. I think the actual exam will be tougher, and I might only manage a score in the sixties or seventies."
"My practice score was a bit higher, eighty-seven, but I still think I'll only manage sixty or seventy this time," Iruka said, his face reflecting his worry.
"Wait, are you two saying you usually score that high?" Anko asked, a little dazed. Her confidence took a hit as she recalled her own practice test score, which was only in the sixties.
"Practice scores don't count for much. They're not a true reflection of our abilities," Iruka sighed.
"Let's just do our best. I heard that if our scores are too low, they might replace Teacher Mu Yue with another teacher," TenTen said, sharing a piece of gossip she had overheard.
"Change teachers? Any other teacher would be fine, but please, not for Teacher Mu Yue's class," Anko said, her expression turning serious. She had grown fond of their homeroom teacher.
While Teacher Mu Yue was their homeroom teacher, she only taught a few classes to Class 1-1; the rest were handled by other instructors.
"Yeah, the other teachers are so boring. Teacher Mu Yue's classes are always interesting and easy to understand," Iruka agreed.
"Why don't we share this news with the whole class? It might motivate everyone to do better," Iruka suggested, recalling how characters in the novels he read would boost morale before a big battle.
Anko thought it was a great idea and immediately stood up on her chair to announce it to the class.
Her words stirred the classroom, as Teacher Mu Yue was a favorite among the students.
"Let's all work hard and get good scores so that Teacher Mu Yue won't be replaced by some boring teacher like the one we had for Taijutsu class," TenTen added, seizing the opportunity to rally their classmates.
"Let's strive for excellent scores! We won't let Teacher Mu Yue be replaced!"
"I'll be frank. Anyone who fails to pass this exam loses my respect. Teacher Mu Yue has taught us well," another student declared.
Kakashi, who had been quietly observing, didn't join in. He knew he would excel and secure the top rank for the grade, ensuring that Teacher Mu Yue's position remained secure.
"Everyone, calm down. The exam will start soon. Just do your best," a familiar voice said.
The classroom fell silent as they turned toward the source of the voice. There stood Teacher Mu Yue at the doorway, a gentle smile on her face. "I believe in all of you, and I know you will do well," she added before leaving to supervise another class.
Teacher Mu Yue was pleased to know that her students wanted to perform well to keep her as their teacher.
However, she knew their worries were unfounded. Even if a change in teachers were considered, it would be based on performance over an entire semester or academic year.
The proctors for the exam were assigned randomly, and it just so happened that he was assigned to Grade 4, Class 2.
"Teacher Mu Yue,"
Many students in Grade 4, Class 2 greeted Mu Yue, and he responded with a smile and a nod to each of them.
Not only was this class home to his disciples, Might Guy and Obito, but he had also substituted for their regular teacher on multiple occasions, so the students were quite familiar with him. Coupled with the comparison to their regular teacher, Chi Valley, the students had grown fond of Mu Yue.
"With Teacher Mu Yue here, I have to pass this time!" Might Guy took a deep breath, looking like he was facing a formidable foe.
If given a choice between taking a theoretical exam and engaging in a battle with a fully-fledged ninja, Might Guy would rather choose the latter.
With graduation looming next year, he figured he might stand a chance in battle if he gave it his all. However, when it came to some of the theoretical exam topics, he felt helpless no matter how hard he tried.
"Just you wait, Rin. This time, I'll definitely prove you wrong," Obito whispered proudly.
"You'll definitely pass this time, right? I believe in you, Obito," Rin encouraged him with a smile.
Although Obito had said this countless times before, and failed each time, Rin still wanted to believe in him and offer her support.
"Just focus on getting the easy questions right and double-check your answers. Leave the difficult ones for last," Rin whispered softly, offering him advice.
As a good friend, she genuinely wanted Obito to shed his reputation as the class dunce.
"Mmhmm," Obito nodded in agreement.
Soon, another proctor entered the classroom—Kimura Sugito, a teacher who shared an office with Mu Yue. Each exam room had two teachers supervising the students.
As the bell rang, Mu Yue and Kimura Sugito distributed the exam papers.
The two teachers then proceeded to supervise the exam, one moving around the classroom while the other remained stationary. Occasionally, they would chat while sitting at the front of the classroom.
"Teacher Chi Valley must be having a tough time. I guess his bonus for this term is gone, having to deal with two of the biggest dunces," Kimura Sugito sighed softly.
"It's hard to say. Maybe they'll study hard this term and pass the exam," Mu Yue shook his head and smiled.
Mu Yue felt that Obito and Might Guy's performance this time would shock a lot of people.
"They haven't passed a single theoretical exam in three years. If they were capable of passing, they would have done so by now. The courses only get harder from here," Kimura Sugito believed Mu Yue was being too optimistic.
"It's a good thing they'll be graduating at the end of this school year, otherwise..." Kimura Sugito shuddered to think what it would be like to have such students in his class.
After their brief chat, Mu Yue resumed patrolling the classroom.
He felt a bit nostalgic for the classroom as the entire Ninja Academy was closed for three days due to the exams. The first day was dedicated to various theoretical exams, followed by two days of practical battles that would determine the year's rankings.
These three days off meant he had missed out on practicing several ninjutsu and refining chakra.
Fortunately, he could still use the 'Apprentice Rebate' ability, and after the theoretical exam, Mu Yue gave Obito some shuriken, causing a small explosion that yielded fifty chakra.
"Watch, Teacher Mu Yue. I'll definitely use the shuriken you gave me to defeat them all and claim the top spot!" Obito expressed his gratitude.
The practical exam was about to begin.
