Chapter 139: Anchor Point
Chapter 139: Anchor Point
"Snip! Snip! Snip!"
Lyon winced as he watched the burly old man in the foyer of the Happiness Apartment, brandishing a large pair of scissors and glaring at him.
Damn it, Lyon thought. Ever since his Demon Badge evolved to the Golden level, the 'demon aura' in his soul seemed to have intensified. Before the Holy Spirit Badge reaches the Golden rank, I'll probably have to sleep in the office.
Or maybe...
Lyon glanced at the apologetic Manager Grandma in the foyer and cautiously asked, "Um... Mary, would you mind if I use some methods to tie up your husband for a while? I haven't been home in over a week, and I really want to go back..."
"Go ahead and tie him up!"
Lyon twisted the old man's waist a few times, but the man remained stubborn, refusing to budge. Manager Grandma, with her white curly hair, sighed helplessly, "I know you're a good person, and the Soul Issue should be the responsibility of the Cleanup Bureau. There's no reason to stop you from going home. But my old man is just impossible to reason with... Sigh, as long as you don't hurt him, you can tie him up for the night."
"No, no, that won't be necessary. A little while will do."
Lyon still held these two elders in high regard, whether in life or death, as they had always done good deeds. He quickly declined her suggestion, then slowly activated the power of the Holy Spirit Pendant, forcing the burly old man to stay in place. Without looking back, Lyon rushed up the stairs.
"Snip!"
The burly old man's eyes widened in disbelief as he saw the "Wicked Devil Brat" climbing the stairs. His broad back muscles tensed, and he managed to push back the binding of the Holy Spirit Pendant slightly, waving his scissors as if to chase after Lyon.
However, after taking only a couple of steps, he was entangled by multiple strands of yarn, tightly bound to the side of the stairs. His soft waist was painfully pinched.
"You stubborn old man! Stubborn in life and even more stubborn in death... Stick your neck out, and I'll measure you!"
Manager Grandma shook her head helplessly as she watched her husband, still holding the scissors and trying to rush upstairs. She brought a small board and sat in the hallway, knitting a scarf to measure the old man's neck.
After waiting on the third floor for a while, Lyon breathed a sigh of relief when the old man didn't catch up. He quickly rushed towards the sixth floor.
"Bro?"
As usual, the door opened ahead of time. As Lyon reached the sixth floor, the nearby door suddenly swung open, and a warm orange light spilled out, illuminating the dim hallway and Lyon's body.
Although she had already heard Lyon's footsteps, Anna, with her slightly haggard appearance from the dust and fatigue, couldn't help but feel a surge of relief in her eyes, as if a burden had been lifted.
However, before Lyon could open his mouth, the relief in Anna's eyes turned into deep concern and grievance.
Biting her lower lip, the frail girl turned her head slightly, her voice carrying a hint of reproach as she spoke softly, "Are you done with your work?"
"Er... Not yet..."
Sensing the slight resentment in his sister's eyes, Lyon stopped in his tracks and spoke apologetically, "Sorry, Anna. There's been a lot going on at the bureau lately. I just came back to check on you all. I have to leave again soon..."
"Alright..."
After hearing Lyon's words, Anna was still a bit upset about his sudden disappearance without a word for seven or eight days. But seeing his weary and exhausted appearance, she bit her lip again, unable to hold back her concern. "Remember to take care of yourself. Don't carry everything on your shoulders. If necessary, take some time off and accept a lower salary."
"Life at home has improved, and my body is much stronger than before. If we both work, we can still afford to support Melani and the others, so you don't have to push yourself so hard..."
"Don't worry, I'm fine."
Looking at his sister's concerned expression as she gave him instructions, Leon couldn't help but smirk, feeling a sense of relief and a long-lost lightness and ease wash over him.
Whether it was the ruthless killing of the Bishop earlier or the lingering scent of blood from the Lane Blood Night that had haunted him, it all seemed to wash away as he returned to this warm home and was bathed in the comforting light.
At this moment, he was no longer the decisive and ruthless cleaner from the Cleanup Bureau, nor was he the outsider struggling with anger and resentment, feeling out of place in this world. Instead, he was an ordinary person longing for a quiet rest in a haven after a busy day's work.
"Anna, I'm glad you're still here..."
After a heartfelt sigh, Leon, who had regained some of his "humanity," took a step forward and gave his sister a tight hug. He then buried his face in Anna's still-slender shoulders and took a deep breath.
Reflecting on his time in the Cleanup Bureau, which had only been a month, he realized that he had become almost like a different person. At the very least, the Leon from a month ago would never have been able to hear the words "Scale Gold Sect" and not immediately crush someone's head.
While he could console himself that it was a work requirement, the truth was that he was drifting further from normalcy and rapidly advancing towards a "non-human" state.
Anna's shoulders were slender, but just like how she supported the family and kept it from falling apart, her presence and that of the two little ones also supported his sense of "humanity."
"Oh my! You...you're being too..."
Anna was startled when Leon suddenly hugged her tightly and buried his face in her neck. She instinctively tried to push him away, blushing.
But after a few seconds of being embraced, she seemed to sense something from the intensity of the hug. She paused, then stopped struggling and, ignoring the dirt on Leon's body, wrapped her arms around his waist, tightening their embrace.
Resting her chin on Leon's shoulder, the frail girl turned her head slightly, feeling embarrassed as she gently pressed her cheek against his jawline. Suppressing the hot and ticklish sensation on her neck, she caressed Leon's back with one hand and whispered softly,
"Brother...no matter what, if you ever feel tired, come home. I'll always be waiting for you."
