Chapter 137: Turned into a Birdman
Chapter 137: Turned into a Birdman
The 'script' was, of course, pre-planned. After all, Rod had promised to team up with Elfman whenever the opportunity arose.
He had to inform Mirajane about helping Alzack out.
Mirajane, wanting to help the Guild Master reduce his stress, supported Rod's actions—plus, it gave her more gossip to enjoy.
However, when it came to delivering her lines, Mirajane found Alzack's reaction intriguing and decided to improvise a bit.
Rod, knowing it wouldn't affect the outcome, was happy to play along.
As for Bisca, there was little doubt she would agree.
Rod had done some preliminary research—mostly through Mirajane, with occasional eavesdropping.
They had already confirmed with a few girls that Bisca had some interest in Alzack, making the success rate quite high.
Of course, there was a minor scare during the investigation.
It happened when they asked Erza, "Does Bisca have anyone she's particularly interested in?"
Erza thought for nearly a minute before giving her answer: "Yes, it's Rod."
Rod nearly had a heart attack. Was it really a good idea to say that in front of Mirajane?
Fortunately, she added, "And Laxus."
Mirajane found Rod's flustered reaction amusing and pressed for more details.
"Because Bisca likes animals, and Rod summons creatures like Poro, wolves, and birds, which she really enjoys. Also, Laxus's animal drawings are a hit with her."
"Ah, we weren't asking about that kind of interest…" Mirajane realized Erza might be a bit insensitive to such matters and didn't press further. "I heard from Levy that Bisca turned her room into a mini-zoo, right?"
"Yes, she keeps many cute animals."
The two of them enthusiastically discussed Bisca's animal-filled room, while Rod was still recovering from the shock.
He later realized that the girls' dorm had an incredibly high tolerance for room modifications.
Like Levy's room turned into a library, Cana's… better not to mention, Erza connecting five rooms, and Bisca even keeping large animals…
It was something he never thought a landlord would allow.
Rod refocused his thoughts as Mirajane waved to the bar, "Bisca~ can you come over here for a moment?"
The beautiful woman with long green hair pointed to herself, confirming with Mirajane.
Seeing her nod, Bisca crossed her legs and stood up, walking over to the counter with a smooth, confident stride.
Rod elbowed Alzack, reminding him to maintain his composure.
Alzack straightened up, trying not to stare at Bisca.
Bisca's gaze lingered on the Guild Master and Rod for half a second, then on Alzack for a full second, before shifting away uncomfortably.
She lightly brushed her hair behind her ear, "What is it, Mirajane?"
"Um… Rod and Alzack have decided to team up for a mission and wanted to invite you along."
Mirajane deliberately left out who was doing the inviting, looking at Bisca. "I think your styles match well. What do you think, Bisca?"
"Since you put it that way…" Bisca was curious about who had actually invited her.
Thinking about it, she could rule out Rod. If he made a move, he'd likely be killed.
And so would anyone who supported him.
So, the one who really wanted to invite her must be… Bisca glanced at Alzack, and their eyes met for a brief moment before they both quickly looked away.
"I, I'll join," Bisca said, more decisive than Alzack, despite her shyness.
She even agreed without asking about the mission details.
Mirajane and Rod exchanged glances, both wearing a knowing, maternal smile.
Rod nudged Alzack again, signaling him to explain the mission.
The man stammered, barely managing to say, "W-welcome to the guild."
Bisca, taken aback by his reaction, replied hesitantly, "T-thank you?"
Mirajane had to stifle a laugh as she explained the mission details to Bisca.
Bisca nodded, "No problem. When do we leave?"
This time, Rod didn't expect Alzack to answer, so he said, "We'll set off at eight tomorrow morning. We should arrive by noon, check into a hotel, and then meet the client. After that, we'll scout the area and assess the enemy's positions. We'll decide whether to strike at night or wait until dawn. This is just a rough plan, so let me know if you have any issues with the schedule."
Bisca replied, "I'm good."
Alzack followed, "Me too."
Rod nodded, "Alright, it's settled. Prepare well today, and we'll meet at the guild entrance tomorrow morning."
Bisca said her goodbyes to the Master and Mirajane, then left the guild. She had some things to handle at her dorm.
Alzack was about to leave when Rod suddenly asked, "Did you pay Bisca for her drinks?"
Alzack froze as if hit by a paralyzing spell.
Mirajane laughed, "Already taken care of."
The spell was broken.
"But—"
Alzack froze again.
"No, it seems fine."
Makarov couldn't help but intervene, "You two..."
"Alright, let's get serious," Rod said. "Alzack, should I pretend to be sick tomorrow so you two can handle the mission alone?"
"Rod~" Alzack was moved, feeling like they were closer than brothers, despite the slight tease.
"Don't joke around, Rod," Makarov said sternly. "Once you take a mission, you must complete it properly. Alzack, it's time to get your act together."
"Yes, sir," Alzack replied obediently, knowing he had to make a good impression after his recent mishap.
"I understand, Master. I'll be very serious," Rod said, thinking it might be better to pretend to be sick on a future mission. This time, he would go with them, but he wouldn't be careless, even if the target was just a group of ordinary bandits. He would prepare as if they were facing a dark guild.
Makarov almost said, "That's a bit excessive," but decided against it. Caution was never a bad thing.
Speaking of preparation, Rod was a bit troubled. "Master, do you know any way to learn how to fly quickly? Like a bird?"
Makarov knew Rod was working on his bird form. "Why not ask Happy? Mirajane should know as well."
"It's different," Rod shook his head. He had already asked Mirajane and Happy, but their method of growing wings on their backs didn't apply to him.
After summoning the Beakbird, he transformed into a bird-man, not like the champions Ashe and Lux from League of Legends, but more like the Yunzhongjun from a mobile game. His arms sprouted red feathers to serve as wings.
Unlike the instinctive earth magic he gained from the Stone Beetle, flying was more of a 'physical skill.' It required Rod to practice flapping his wings repeatedly.
In comparison, using the feathers as throwing knives was relatively easy, though his accuracy needed improvement.
Regarding how people addressed Mirajane, there were a few variations. The more formal would call her Mirajane or Miss Mirajane. Those closer to her might call her Mirajane or Mirajane-nee. Elfman called her Onee-san, and Lisanna called her Mirajane-nee or Elfman-nii.
And then there were the shameless ones like Wakaba, who would call her Mirajane-chan, but the author mercilessly banned that nickname.
