Chapter 137: The Commission and the Martial Arts Academy
Chapter 137: The Commission and the Martial Arts Academy
On February 20th, a leisure day, Chen Chuan and his team gathered at Duyi Hotel for a meal. Many of the team members were there as a favor, but Chen Chuan knew what they enjoyed, so before the meal, he settled the accounts and distributed the rewards according to each person's contribution. He also mentioned that the biological implant and gold certificates had not been processed yet, and he would distribute them later.
This approach proved to be effective, as the team was clearly more cheerful and spirited after receiving their payments.
Wei Chang'an, sitting nearby, raised his cup to Chen Chuan and said, "Junior Brother, now that you've learned to drive, why not get a license and buy a car?"
Chen Chuan considered it but decided to hold off. A car was indeed expensive, and there were many things to consider. Although he had earned a substantial sum, his expenses for martial arts training were undoubtedly higher.
Moreover, when he took on commissions, he had access to company vehicles, so he didn't need to worry. If he needed a vehicle for team missions, renting one would be more convenient.
"Let's talk about that later," Chen Chuan replied. "However, Wei Ge, due to certain reasons, the commissioner for this mission won't be revealed for some time. It might take a year before we can disclose the client's identity, so your promotion to Senior Commissioner may have to wait."
Wei Chang'an leaned back in his chair, appearing relaxed. "Why bring that up? I still owe you a favor, Wei Ge. Even without that, helping a brother is the right thing to do. As for the Senior Commissioner position, it's not a big deal."
Ren Xiaotian sat beside Lin Xiaoti, who, although not part of the raid on the camp, had contributed by guarding the radio and relaying messages. She was also entitled to a share, and now she was happily calculating how many snacks she could buy and how many new headpieces and skirts she could afford.
On the other side, Wei Dong had barely started eating when he began stuffing his mouth, eager to share his experience of the mission. He found it unsatisfying because, aside from the infiltration, the rest was mostly a gunfight. Although he had learned to shoot, he quickly emptied his magazine without hitting anyone. Instead, he managed to take down several crossbowmen with his bare hands, possibly without engaging any of them head-on.
Wu Han, sitting next to Wei Dong, was impressed by his performance. This junior brother was efficient and decisive, always hitting his targets without questioning why.
Wu Han thought to himself that he would bring this junior brother along on his next commission.
Ding Liao, the marksman, raised his cup to Chen Chuan and said, "Chen Xiao, please take me, Ding Liao, along next time you have a mission like this."
Chen Chuan clinked cups with him and smiled, "A skilled marksman like you, Ding Ge, is hard to come by. I'd be delighted to have your help."
Ding Liao laughed, "Then it's settled." He drained his cup and said, "Let's make it official."
Most of the team were martial artists and didn't drink alcohol, and Chen Chuan himself preferred to stay sober to maintain his accuracy.
The meal lasted over two hours, after which the team exited the hotel together.
As Chen Chuan walked out of Duyi Hotel, he glanced up at the entrance, recalling that he had dined here before entering the Wuyi Academy for the re-examination. In the blink of an eye, he had experienced so much since then.
Back then, his sole focus was on passing the Wuyi Academy's re-examination, but now, he was planning his journey to Central City.
He lowered his gaze and looked ahead, his steps more confident than before.
A car horn honked, and Wei Chang'an drove up to them, waving from inside the vehicle, "Junior Brother, and a few other classmates, shall I give you a ride back?"
Chen Chuan accepted without hesitation, "Thanks, Wei Ge."
After the ride back to the academy, Chen Chuan returned to his dorm, freshened up, and sat in the living room, taking out the string of bone beads. He had been observing these beads for several days, and they seemed to have a stimulating effect on transmuted organs. There were thirteen beads on the string, and if used continuously, they could last for nearly two months.
Although he felt there could have been more beads, he wasn't too concerned since he had obtained them for free. He still had commissions to complete, but with the financial support, he didn't feel as rushed.
For the next period, he waited for a response from Gaoming while taking on ghost tale commissions from the company, which had provided him with many conveniences. In return, he decided to increase his commission completion rate to improve the company's reputation in the government hall. He selected some easier commissions to start with.
The first one was "The Never-Ending Corn," discovered in a village outside Yangzhi City. It began when a villager ate half a corncob and left for an urgent matter. Upon returning, he found the corn had regrown.
Initially, he thought someone was playing a prank on him, but after several instances, he was delighted to find that no matter how much corn he ate, it would regrow the next day, and not just one, but seemingly all the corn in the bag.
However, there were only about thirty pounds of corn, not a significant amount, and it wouldn't fetch a high price. He was afraid of losing it if he sold it, so he decided to eat it daily as food. He shared it with some familiar villagers, although some were concerned, but he didn't take it seriously.
Chen Chuan arrived at the village, only to find it completely deserted, with warning signs posted at the entrance. The village management staff who accompanied him were reluctant to step inside.
Chen Chuan entered the village alone and, as he approached a particular house, his second self exhibited subtle signs of etherealization.
He pushed open the half-open wooden door and stepped inside. In the kitchen, he spotted several fresh ears of corn on the stove, their kernels plump and golden, emitting a mouth-watering aroma as if they had just been cooked and taken out of the pot. The sight alone was enough to stimulate one's appetite.
Chen Chuan glanced at the corn a few times before stepping outside. After exploring the entire village, he discovered similar items in other places, almost every household having them.
Before coming, Chen Chuan had reviewed the information, knowing that ordinary people could actually handle this situation, but it couldn't be as simple as burning it all. Doing so would only cause the problem to spread.
In reality, as long as the corn was consumed whole, including the cob, at the earliest sign of discovery, there would be no issue. If someone had provided guidance initially, perhaps the subsequent tragedy could have been avoided.
By now, dealing with the situation had become slightly more complicated. It required feeding the corn to livestock and then distributing the livestock for consumption within a day.
After assessing the situation, Chen Chuan had a plan in mind. He returned to the company and discussed the matter with Ren Xiaotian, asking him to arrange the necessary personnel for handling it.
Upon hearing that he could participate in addressing the odd tale, Ren Xiaotian became visibly excited. The young partners, upon learning of this, were also thrilled. They immediately hired people to purchase livestock, and within a day, the task was completed. After returning, everyone felt a sense of accomplishment.
However, Chen Chuan shook his head. While it was worth celebrating the resolution of the issue, he believed that providing some advice on handling odd tales could potentially prevent such incidents.
Chen Chuan brought up. Perhaps offering advice on odd tale consultations could prevent such incidents.
Chen Chuan brought this up with Ren Xiaotian, and unlike other companies, they didn't hesitate to agree. They had more work than they could handle, and even if they didn't, they could always turn to the Government Hall for more. Odd tales that ordinary people could handle on their own were rare, and addressing them only enhanced the company's reputation.
Most importantly, this suggestion came from Chen Chuan, a crucial partner, so Ren Xiaotian gave his full commitment without any reservations.
As this commission didn't require much effort, Chen Chuan proceeded to tackle a few smaller ones.
However, due to the significant time gap, these smaller commissions not only had the clients disappeared, but the odd tales themselves had left no trace.
Nevertheless, confirming the resolution of these odd tales was beneficial for the company's reputation, and they were compensated accordingly, making the effort worthwhile.
Time flew, and the month's end arrived.
One morning, as Chen Chuan woke up, the phone rang. He answered, and a familiar voice greeted him, "Hello, Uncle Chen? It's me, Gao Ming."
Chen Chuan's spirits lifted. He hadn't rushed Gao Ming, knowing his meticulous and responsible nature. The call indicated that he had found something.
After Chen Chuan acknowledged, Gao Ming continued, "Uncle Chen, I've investigated that case, but there are some details I'd rather discuss in person. Next month, I'll return for a visit, and we can talk then."
Chen Chuan understood the sensitivity of the matter and agreed, "Alright, let's discuss it when you're back next month."
As he hung up and took a few steps, the phone rang again. Answering it, he heard Ren Xiaotian's voice, "Mr. Chen, are you available today?"
Chen Chuan inquired, "Regarding the commission?"
"Yes, the neighboring Jingxian Government Office has approached our company, seeking our assistance with a peculiar case. Are you available, Mr. Chen?"
The Government Office...
Chen Chuan contemplated. Even a county-level Government Office was still a government department, and although he had already obtained the necessary evaluations, it didn't diminish their value. Successfully handling such commissions could significantly benefit his pursuit of the Armor Certification.
After careful consideration, he replied, "Alright, I'll be there shortly."
