Chapter 136: You Can't Just Get Seriously Injured and Be Picked Up by the Master, Can You?
Chapter 136: You Can't Just Get Seriously Injured and Be Picked Up by the Master, Can You?
The eyes of the other patrons in the bar turned toward them, and the two of them apologized in hushed voices to those they had disturbed.
Rod sat down and continued to glare at Alzack.
Alzack quickly apologized, "Sorry, sorry, I was just curious to see how you do things, so I followed you... I promise it won't happen again!"
Rod was puzzled, "Then why didn't I find you after searching for so long? Even Mira didn't notice you."
Alzack sheepishly replied, "Well... because I specialize in gun and bullet magic, which works best at a distance. So, to support my fighting style, I’ve picked up some skills in stealth and observation."
"Stealth and observation... you mean you've developed some top-notch stalking and spying skills!" Rod thought for a moment. He could probably learn those skills too.
Alzack raised a finger, "I promise this is the first and last time I’ll use them for this kind of thing!"
"I appreciate that," Rod said, not really in the mood to be gracious. "Thanks for following me, I guess."
He couldn’t help but think, "You followed me for the first time, and it had to be me? Should I be grateful?"
Because of this, he had to split his attention, looking for the stalker instead of enjoying Mira’s company. Wouldn’t it have been better to just enjoy the view?
Alzack, feeling guilty and needing Rod’s help, apologized profusely. He even opened the menu and offered to let Rod order anything he wanted.
Today, Rod could have ordered the entire menu, and Alzack would have accepted it. If the owner caught him, he could always wait for Chico to come back from the guild and beg her to help.
Rod, however, couldn’t be that cruel. He only ordered three of the more expensive desserts, one to eat there and two to take away.
Seeing the pained expression on Alzack’s face, the matter of the stalking was put to rest.
Free desserts always tasted better.
Alzack then tried to steer the conversation back to the topic of love.
Rod wasn’t sure how to help, as he didn’t really understand Alzack’s mindset.
If you like Bisca, why not just go talk to her, invite her out for a meal, or go shopping?
If you can’t just say it, find an excuse. For example, "My cat can do backflips, do you want to see?"
But these suggestions didn’t help Alzack at all, because the hardest part for him was opening his mouth.
"How about writing her a letter? You can always write down what you want to say when you can’t see her."
Alzack despondently said, "I can’t do it. Just thinking about writing a letter to her feels like she’s standing right in front of me."
"..." Rod was impressed. The legendary "seeing the person in the words," right? And it’s seeing your own words to imagine the person you want to see.
"So, what do you want to do, make Bisca come to you first?"
"If I could do that..." Alzack thought it might be a bit much. He asked, "How did you and Mira start?"
"Actually, Mira and I haven’t started anything yet..." Rod saw the disbelieving look on Alzack’s face and explained, "If I have to say, it started when I first woke up in the guild and she took care of me.
You can’t just go get attacked by wild beasts in the forest, be picked up by the Master, and then have the Master hand you over to Bisca to take care of, can you?"
"That’s true..." Alzack rested his chin in his hand, actually considering it.
"Hey! Get a grip."
This guy was beyond help.
Rod thought about his own experience and said, "Since I joined the guild, Mira has been taking care of me. We work together, and we chat a lot.
If I have to say there’s been any progress, it might have been during our first mission together."
Rod wasn’t entirely sure.
But ever since then, he felt a bit closer to her, and whenever he asked her out for a meal or something, there was always a good reason.
"So, you should try building up some courage and invite her to team up with you..."
At the mention of teaming up, Alzack became even more dejected, "I just got into trouble, and the Master told me to take some time off."
"..." Oh, this is partly my fault. Rod felt a twinge of guilt as he savored the sweet cake.
"Use this time to build up some courage and find a suitable mission."
Rod tried to salvage the situation. "I'll keep an eye out for you, and if you still can't muster the courage by the end of the month, I'll help you out."
Alzack brightened up. "Great! Thanks, Rod. You're the most reliable summoner around!"
What does being a summoner have to do with this? "Good luck."
Rod took the two packaged desserts back to share with Mira, who offered him a new drink concocted by Mr. Kuro.
Rod found joy, and Alzack found hope. Everyone had a bright future ahead.
...
After that day, Rod observed Alzack's progress in building up his courage every day.
He kept watching until the end of the month.
This kid was as stubborn as a mule. While Rod had even learned how to fly in Harpy form, Alzack hadn't even gathered the courage to take a single step.
It dragged on until October 31st, when Alzack finally came to Rod for help, fidgeting nervously.
"Ah..." Rod sighed and looked at Makarov. "Master, I'd like to team up with Alzack for a mission."
"Sure, no problem!" Makarov, who had been dozing off, suddenly perked up. "When are you leaving? Do you need any magic books or magic crystals?"
Rod squinted at him. "Are you trying to get rid of me?"
"Hahaha, not at all. I just think Alzack has had enough rest."
Makarov wouldn't admit that he hoped one less person would restrict his drinking.
"It's the mission to arrest the bandit gang. We don't need any magic books."
Makarov's face lit up. Had Rod changed his ways?
"...We won't need much."
Alright, some things just don't change easily.
Makarov nodded. "Do as you please. Mira, what's the situation?"
"The intelligence says the bandit gang has over sixty members. Two people might be a bit too much to handle."
Mira winked at Rod, signaling him not to focus only on the magic crystals and to remember his lines.
Rod nodded. "That's true. Are there any other mages in the guild who would be a good fit for us?"
Alzack, who had been a bit out of it, hadn't realized that the plan had changed from teaming up with Bisca to just the two of them.
Now, hearing that they might need to add someone else, he looked at Mira with hopeful eyes.
Bisca, Bisca... Alzack silently repeated the name he most wanted to hear, wishing he could use a telepathy spell to transmit it directly to Mira's brain.
"The area the bandits occupy is quite treacherous, so long-range attacks would be more suitable."
Mira saw Alzack's face light up but quickly changed the subject. "But both of you have long-range magic. How about teaming up with Natsu and Happy? They can provide close combat support and attack from the air."
Alzack's face turned red. Teaming up with Natsu and Happy wasn't bad, but it was far from what he had hoped for!
Rod was also confused. Why wasn't this going according to plan?
He noticed the mischievous smile on Mira's face—oh, he got it.
Rod said, "That makes sense, but Natsu has been quite diligent this month. He should take a break, and it's exhausting to team up with him."
Mira considered this. "How about Gray? You've worked together before, and he's very strong. He can handle both close and mid-to-long-range combat."
Rod looked at her, trying to convey with his eyes: Haven't you had enough fun? Alzack is about to cry.
Mira looked back, holding up one finger to indicate it would be the last time.
"Gray seems to have been on a mission with Loki for the past ten days."
Rod sighed, feigning regret. "We just need someone good at long-range combat. My close combat skills are decent enough."
"Then, how about Bisca?" Mira finally said the name Alzack had been hoping to hear. "She hasn't gone on a mission in a week. She might be worried about her rent."
Makarov watched the young mages bicker back and forth, not quite understanding what was going on.
When did Mira start helping with team recommendations and even consider tactics?
