Chapter 136: The Young "Pokemon Breeder"
Chapter 136: The Young "Pokemon Breeder"
Thursday morning, the town of Shinen was shrouded in a light mist.
"Hmm, that's strange."
Jing He looked at his phone, which wouldn't turn on, with a puzzled expression.
Is it out of battery?
He glanced at Gastly.
Seeming to understand Jing He's thoughts, Gastly quickly raised its claws to indicate it had nothing to do with it.
Fortunately, after plugging it in, the phone turned on smoothly.
He carried Glaceon to Cynthia's room.
They had arrived in Shinen quite late yesterday, and with the late-night snacks and other activities, they didn't go to bed until around two or three in the morning.
"Are you awake?" Jing He knocked gently on the door.
"Coming."
A lazy yawn came from inside the room.
Then, with a bang!
"Roar?!"
"Lucario!"
"Bu-yi~"
After a series of thuds, Cynthia opened the door, her hair slightly disheveled.
Under the watchful eyes of her Garchomp and Lucario, Jing He said awkwardly:
"Because I didn't know the exact address, so..."
At this moment, Cynthia finally realized what was happening.
She had almost forgotten that today was the day of the Pokemon Researcher Conference.
Bang!
The door closed again.
"Wait a moment!"
Jing He and Gastly exchanged a glance.
They decided to wait outside.
It had snowed all night, so the entire town of Shinen was now covered in a layer of silver.
"Oo-woof!"
"Chirp!"
Seeing this, Glaceon and Beldum immediately dashed into the snow.
This scene made Glaceon feel like it had returned to the snowy mountains of Alola.
As for Beldum, this was the first time it had seen such a vast snow-covered landscape.
Gastly placed its hands on its hips, shook its head, and sighed, looking like an old, wise being.
"Kee~"
In the end, they're just kids, unlike me.
Jing He shot it a sidelong glance.
The next second.
Bang!!
A snowball exploded on Gastly's face.
"Kee!! (´´)"
You forced me to this!
With a series of eerie cackles, Gastly dove into the snow.
Before long, Cynthia's Pokemon also emerged from the house.
But what greeted them was a barrage of snowballs.
Especially Garchomp.
As soon as it stepped out of the house, it was immediately enveloped in a massive shadow.
"Roar?"
When it looked up in confusion,
"Roar?! Σ(дlll)"
Gastly, holding an enormous snowball, grinned wickedly and hurled it with all its might.
Bang!!
In an instant,
Garchomp was buried in the snow.
Realizing something was wrong, Gastly muttered to itself.
"Kee~"
You can't... be a sore loser, can you?
Then,
it was the start of Garchomp's "high-speed chase" and Gastly's "great escape."
In any case,
Jing He had never seen "Dragon Rush" used to clear snow before.
After passing through a series of large and small streets, Jing He and Cynthia arrived at the Shinen Historical Institute at 8:30 AM, after about half an hour.
The director of the Shinen Historical Institute was Cynthia's grandmother, and the institute was quite large.
In front of the institute was a large white brick square, with the snow already cleared away.
Behind the institute was a vast forest, connected to the body of Mt. Coronet.
At the entrance of the institute, many scholars and experts from various fields of research had already gathered.
They were grouped in twos and threes, discussing and sharing their research findings.
"Here you are."
Dr. Fuji, carrying a briefcase, saw the two and waved to them.
He then introduced them briefly:
"This is Dr. Oak, you should be familiar with him."
Dr. Oak!
"Ha ha ha, is that you, Cynthia? Fuji has been telling me about you. You're an excellent researcher and a very skilled trainer."
Dr. Oak had none of the airs of a Pokemon research authority, his smile was warm and friendly, giving the impression of a kind neighbor.
"You flatter me," Cynthia smiled faintly.
Dr. Oak's gaze then fell on Jing He. "And this is—"
"Jing He."
Jing He introduced himself with a smile.
He and Dr. Fuji had spoken on the phone a few times but had never met in person.
As for Dr. Oak, their only connection was a decent comment he had left on one of Jing He's papers.
Dr. Oak wore a "I knew it" expression and praised him:
"Your paper was excellent. I've heard about the research you and Dr. Fuji have been doing; it's impressive!"
At the same time, Dr. Fuji took out a file, a badge shaped like a pin, and a name tag from his briefcase, handing them to Jing He.
"This is—"
The name tag read: Researcher · Jing He
Researcher?
Jing He was taken aback.
The pin-shaped badge was the symbol of a League researcher, with a chip inside recording some information.
The file contained Dr. Fuji's report on the progress of the Manaphy natural evolution research over the past period.
So, this is how I became a researcher?
"So... you knew?" Jing He lowered his voice and asked Cynthia, who wasn't surprised.
Cynthia smiled slightly and said to Dr. Fuji:
"Dr. Fuji, where's my grandmother?"
"She's inside."
"Talk to the two doctors. I'll go see my grandmother."
After offering a brief apology to the two professors, Jing He darted off at a brisk pace.
Later on, people began to approach him, indirectly introducing Jing He to many of the industry's top figures.
For example, there was Professor Elm, who specialized in Pokemon eggs in the Johto region and was a student of Professor Oak. Then there were Professor Rowan, Professor Kukui, and the "heartthrob" of the Kalos region, Professor Sycamore, who was a student of Professor Birch.
Looking at these esteemed professors, Jing He couldn't help but remark, "They’re all the ones who give out the starter Pokemon, aren't they?"
Professor Kukui was already acquainted with Jing He, though their previous interactions were under the guise of the "Royal Masked Man." Nevertheless, he still greeted Jing He warmly.
To Jing He's surprise, Professor Sycamore also engaged him in a detailed discussion about his research and hypotheses, showing a genuine interest in his work.
It wasn't until later that Jing He realized why.
Professor Sycamore's research focused on Mega Evolution, which heavily involved the bond between trainers and their Pokemon. This was somewhat related to the hypothesis Jing He had proposed.
"Perhaps you could visit Kalos sometime in the future," Professor Sycamore smiled.
"Sure, if I have the chance."
Jing He didn't decline, as there was no specific time mentioned, and it wouldn't do to offend anyone.
The conference officially began shortly after. Professor Oak, the leading figure in Pokemon research, took the stage to a thunderous applause. Following his speech, various researchers began sharing their experiences and findings.
This part didn't concern Jing He much, so he took Gengar, Weavile, and Beldum for a stroll nearby.
As they rounded the back of the Shrine Town Historical Institute, Gengar seemed to hear something.
"Kya!"
"What is it?"
Jing He asked. Weavile's ears perked up, indicating she had also heard something.
The two Pokemon exchanged glances and ran in one direction, straight into the forest behind the institute. Jing He, though still uncertain of the situation, picked up Beldum and followed them.
Soon, even Jing He could hear the commotion.
It sounded like a Pokemon battle?
Bang!
Another loud noise.
Jing He finally saw the source of the disturbance.
A boy with short brown hair, wearing a black jacket, stood there, holding a wooden stick with a serious and focused expression. In front of him was a bright orange Pokemon with a flame on its tail—Charmeleon!
Seeing the boy's appearance, Jing He was momentarily taken aback.
Is it Gary? Or Green?
The Charmeleon suggests it's Green?
Professor Oak's grandson!
Across from Green and Charmeleon was a Pokemon with its fur standing on end, its back arched, and a purple coat—Skuntank!
The scene was peculiar.
A spontaneous wild battle?
Skuntank bared its teeth, releasing a pungent odor and charging at Charmeleon and Green.
"Charmeleon, Ember!"
Green commanded, gripping the wooden stick tightly. When Skuntank focused on Charmeleon, Green, despite the stench, delivered a strong strike.
Jing He remembered that Green had learned martial arts from the Gym Leader of Saffron City in Johto, Koga. Though young, he was skilled, with a warrior's demeanor.
However, despite his martial training, Green was still a novice trainer, and his attack didn't cause significant damage to Skuntank.
It did, however, draw Skuntank's attention, giving Charmeleon the opportunity.
A precise Ember hit Skuntank, causing it to panic and screech as it fled into the forest.
Seeing Skuntank run away, Green let out a deep breath and sat down on the ground.
He didn't forget to encourage Charmeleon.
"Good job."
"Kar!"
Charmeleon called softly and sat beside him.
The "young trainer" was still quite inexperienced.
It seemed he had only recently obtained Charmeleon.
While Jing He observed Green, Green's gaze also turned toward him.
Green had noticed Jing He's presence earlier.
He could tell that if he and Charmeleon hadn't been able to handle Skuntank, the cool-looking guy would have stepped in.
However, Green had no intention of talking to Jing He. He nodded slightly and then stood up, leading Charmeleon away.
"Tsks."
Jing He clicked his tongue.
Before losing to Red and becoming a "few-minute champion," Green's personality was quite arrogant.
Jing He couldn't help but think that time was running out for Team Rocket's boss, Giovanni.
He wondered if this world's Red and Green could achieve the same feats as their counterparts, reaching the peak at age ten.
It seemed a bit unrealistic.
