Chapter 136: The Link System
Chapter 136: The Link System
"The Link System?" Yu Xuan asked as he walked alongside Gui Ping in the long corridor.
"Yes," Gui Ping replied, "In fact, we've been working on something related for years. My brother developed a new type of Duel Disk that can link card data quantum intelligence with brain memory areas. All duel information is converted into brain images and visualized in space."
"I think I've heard of this," Yu Xuan said, recalling the information.
It was the kind of Duel Disk that Kaiba developed in the movie "Dimension of Dark Shadows," a blend of technology and idealism. It could digitize card data, interact with human memory, amplify the dueler's self-awareness, and even, under certain circumstances, print cards from memory data images.
The famous scene in the movie where Kaiba Corporation's CEO dramatically 'duel-summons' by slashing his hand across the floor was made possible by this system. In a desperate move, he summoned the "Obelisk the Tormentor," a card that should not have existed in this world, shocking Blue God for an entire year.
"But that development was just a prelude to something bigger, and now we're finally ready to unveil it."
Gui Ping led Yu Xuan to another laboratory. As they entered, someone handed them duel disks and headset-like devices, which Gui Ping then handed to Yu Xuan.
"This," he said, "is the key to unlocking a new world."
A light blue duel disk with a futuristic design, intricately carved edges, and a circle of transparent displays and indicator lights surrounding it.
Gui Ping had already put on his duel disk and headset and gave Yu Xuan a mysterious smile. "Go ahead and turn it on, you'll see."
As he spoke, he activated his device.
Yu Xuan followed suit and activated his system. The indicator lights on the duel disk lit up one by one, and a soft buzz echoed through the headset. Suddenly, it was as if a stream of data washed over him, like a vast blue sea of zeros and ones, quickly engulfing his entire field of vision until everything around him was swallowed up.
When he came to, he looked around and found himself standing on an unfamiliar street.
He was in an unknown city.
The skyline was defined by bizarre skyscrapers that seemed like something out of a sci-fi movie, towering spires piercing the clouds. But they weren't made of concrete and glass; instead, they had a structure that changed color and texture with the light, making the entire city look like a gigantic gem.
Yu Xuan paused, looking down at his body.
His vision, sense of touch, and all other senses felt as real as they would in the physical world.
But something instinctual told him that this world was illusory.
"This is amazing, isn't it?" Gui Ping appeared beside him and said with a smile.
"Since this is just a test model that hasn't been fully developed yet, we're using our real-world appearances. Otherwise, you could choose to log in with any virtual avatar you want."
"Is this a fully immersive online game?" Yu Xuan asked.
"Well, it's a bit different from what you might have read in fantasy novels," Gui Ping thought about it, "but in terms of the outcome, you could think of it that way."
"In fact, the prototype of this technology has existed for many years, even before my brother and I took over the company. Our adoptive father, Gozaburo Kaiba, had already developed a very mature version of it back then."
Yu Xuan understood what he was referring to.
It was the story of Noah Kaiba from the DM anime.
Gozaburo's son, Noah Kaiba, had died in a car accident, so he downloaded Noah's consciousness into a supercomputer used for military operations at Kaiba Corporation. Over time, this consciousness evolved into a highly intelligent AI, and it created a massive virtual world during its growth.
In the anime, Noah quietly pulled Yugi and his friends into the virtual world he had created, but at the end of the Noah arc, that data space was destroyed.
However, Kaiba must have kept the technology.
Based on that, they developed the "Link System," a similar vast virtual world space, like an enormous open-world online game. According to Kaiba's vision, duelists from all over the world would be able to log in and duel each other online.
Hearing this description, Yu Xuan wondered if the system Kaiba was developing had anything to do with that future technology.
Yu Xuan then tried calling out to Silence, and after only a moment, the silver-haired wizard appeared from his Duel Disk in spirit form, tilting his head.
"What is it?"
"Oh, it's nothing. Just calling out for fun," Yu Xuan smiled.
Silence: "."
Of course, he wasn't just calling out for fun. This confirmed that even though his current state was a projection of his consciousness into a data world, the power of the spirits and the attributes of destiny still applied.
However, this was to be expected. Supernatural powers were metaphysical, and they would work in data space as well, which had already been proven in the original series.
In the original story, when AI Noah tried to take over the game's body in virtual space, he was countered by the divine power of the Millennium Puzzle.
"It's amazing, isn't it?"
Gui Ping said proudly.
"This is still just a prototype, and only testers can log in for now. But we'll improve the facilities as soon as possible so that duelists from all over the world can duel happily without being restricted by their location.
My brother invited you to participate in the 'Duel City GX' tournament, didn't he? We're actually planning to hold this tournament in the Link System as an online event and also as the opening ceremony of the Link System."
He paused as he spoke.
He had just received a message from a technical staff member at the Kaiba Corporation headquarters.
"Illegal login? Here?" Gui Ping exclaimed, "But the Link System isn't even officially open yet."
He immediately made a connection.
"Could it be that hacker from last time again?"
"I don't know, sir," the technician said, "But we've detected an abnormal data space in the Link System. We're trying to clear it now."
"No, send me the coordinates first," Gui Ping interrupted, "I want to see it myself."
"Yes, sir."
With the coordinates from headquarters, Gui Ping snapped his fingers. Suddenly, the scene around them began to distort, and everything spun wildly.
In an instant, they had teleported to another corner of the virtual map.
This was one of Gui Ping's GM privileges, allowing him to teleport to any coordinates on the map.
Where they landed, they faced only a gloomy castle. In stark contrast to the futuristic sci-fi architecture they had seen before, the castle's walls were weathered and dilapidated, and its sinister shadow loomed large, like a gigantic monster lurking quietly in the darkness.
Gui Ping frowned, "Strange, we didn't design this area."
"Of course not."
A voice emerged from the shadows.
A man in black with sunglasses slowly walked out, smiling.
"Because it was designed by our master, lurking in the shadows of your shiny virtual world."
"Are you the hackers who invaded our company's system? Who are you, and what do you want?" Gui Ping asked sternly.
The man chuckled, not answering directly, but instead said,
"Now that we've been discovered, it should be easy for Kaiba Corporation to kick us out of the Link System or delete this stronghold in the shadows.
But if you do that, you won't get the answers to the questions you want, will you?"
"Oh?" Gui Ping smiled as he crossed his arms, "I smell conditions. So, what do you want?"
"It's simple," the man replied, "We'll use the only rule that Kaiba Seto, the CEO, advocates, and the only rule in this 'Link System' to decide."
The man revealed his Duel Disk and deck.
"Let's duel. If you win, we'll gladly provide you with answers to any questions you seek."
