Chapter 136: The Eight Inner Gates Begins Teaching (4k)
Itami had just returned home when he received a visitor he hadn't expected.
"Head Clanman." Itami greeted Uchiha Fugaku.
"There's no need to be so formal. Just call me Uncle, your father and I fought side by side." Uchiha Fugaku said with a smile.
"Yes, Uncle Fugaku." Itami nodded in agreement.
"Is there something I can help you with today?" Itami asked.
He didn't think that Uchiha Fugaku, the head of the Uchiha clan, would pay him a visit out of idle curiosity, especially since he wasn't his real uncle.
"It's nothing much. It's that time again when the clan rewards outstanding Uchiha members, and I happened to be free, so I thought I'd bring it over and take a look at our Uchiha genius." Uchiha Fugaku said cheerfully.
"Thank you for your trouble." Itami expressed his gratitude.
He wasn't particularly concerned about the so-called reward. Although Itami had neither parents nor grandparents, he wasn't lacking in money.
His parents had left him a substantial inheritance, enough for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life even if he didn't become a ninja.
"Hahaha, it's no trouble at all, and it's not that far." Uchiha Fugaku laughed.
"Itami, what are your plans from now on?" Uchiha Fugaku asked suddenly.
Uchiha Fugaku placed the items he was going to give Itami on the table and continued, "I heard that you already possess the strength to defeat a graduating genin. Have you considered graduating early? The ninja school curriculum probably isn't of much help to you anymore."
"If you graduate early, I can make an exceptional request to have you transferred directly to the Police Force. Then you can learn from the jounin in the clan."
Usually, freshly graduated genin couldn't directly join departments like the Police Force; they would first need to be guided by a jounin for a period of time. But since Uchiha Fugaku was the director, he believed that making such a request to the Third Hokage shouldn't be a problem.
Upon hearing this, Itami shook his head inwardly. He had already discussed the matter of graduating early with Mu Yue, and he felt that her suggestion was excellent. Moreover, he didn't think that the Uchiha jounin could surpass Mu Yue in terms of strength and teaching ability.
However, since Uchiha Fugaku, the head of the Uchiha clan, had come to see him in person, Itami didn't want to be too direct. After a moment's hesitation, he politely declined,
"Uncle Fugaku, I feel that I still have some way to go before I can become a full-fledged ninja, so I don't plan to graduate early for now."
"Well, that's fine too. I didn't expect you to be so mature at such a young age. You will surely achieve great things in the future." Although he was refused, Uchiha Fugaku's face didn't show any displeasure. Instead, he praised Itami.
"Itami, are you still on good terms with Uchiha Obito? I heard that he has made great progress recently and has also been recognized as an outstanding Uchiha." Uchiha Fugaku continued the conversation.
"Yes." Itami nodded in acknowledgement. Mu Yue had only asked them not to reveal that she was their teacher, but she hadn't told them to pretend to be strangers as disciples.
"What do you think of Uchiha Obito?" Uchiha Fugaku asked casually.
"He is a very talented Uchiha and trains diligently." Itami replied.
Uchiha Fugaku asked directly, so he answered directly.
"You outstanding Uchiha should interact more with each other. The future of the Uchiha clan will depend on you." Uchiha Fugaku nodded with a smile.
When Fugaku was about to leave, Itami saw him out to the door.
"The Konoha Police Force..." Itami shook his head.
What Uchiha Fugaku had said held no appeal for him whatsoever.
...
"Dad, I'm home." Might Guy's injuries weren't serious, and after being treated with medical ninjutsu, he was soon discharged and returned home.
"Guy, how was your exam today? Did you unleash your youthful passion to the fullest!" Might Dai asked.
"I lost to Obito today, so I only got second place in the grade." Might Guy answered.
"But Obito was really strong today. Even though I gave it my all, I still couldn't beat him."
Pa!
Might Dai slapped Might Guy heavily on the shoulder, his face wet with tears, and said, "Guy, even if you fail, as long as you burn your youth to the fullest, you don't have to be discouraged. Besides, coming in second is also a good thing. It means that from now on, you won't lack opponents to fight against."
"I'm not discouraged. I lost that battle fairly and squarely, and for now, I've won more of my fights against Obito!" Might Guy said, giving a thumbs-up.
Today's battle with Obito had simply been a matter of a slight difference in strength. Might Guy was clear about this, but he believed that he would be able to catch up soon.
Just as Might Guy was about to start eating, there was a knock on their door.
"We rarely have visitors. I wonder who it could be. Could it be a client?" Might Dai walked towards the door to open it.
"No way," Might Guy scoffed. "Who would come looking for a genin for a mission?"
"Hahaha! Stranger things have happened. Don't forget, I'm the cat-finding expert recognized by the Hokage himself!" Might Dai laughed heartily.
Might Guy opened the door, and to his surprise, he saw two unfamiliar ninjas standing there.
"Who are you?" Might Guy asked, his curiosity turning to concern as he recognized their faces.
He didn't know their names, but he remembered their appearance—they were the same two ninjas he had chased down and beaten up for insulting his father not long ago.
"Are they here for revenge?" Might Guy wondered aloud, forgetting about his meal as he put down his chopsticks and rushed to stand protectively beside Might Dai.
"What are you two up to?" Might Guy asked cautiously, his eyes narrowing as he watched their every move. He was ready to enter the Rock Breathing state and defend his father if they made any hostile moves.
"Guy, do you know them?" Might Dai asked, perplexed by the situation.
The skinny and tall ninja and his slightly plump companion took a step forward, standing side by side.
Might Guy quickly adjusted his breathing rhythm and scanned the area for the best direction to attack, determined to protect their home from any potential damage.
However, something unexpected happened.
The two ninjas bowed in sync, apologizing, "We're sorry!"
Might Guy quietly retracted his leg, which had been poised to kick, and resumed his normal breathing.
"Guy, what's going on? Why are they suddenly apologizing?" Might Dai was still unclear about the reason for the sudden apology from these two strangers.
"We were wrong to mock you for being a perpetual genin. As fellow Leaf ninjas, we should respect each other," the slightly plump ninja explained.
"And I was wrong to attack a student of the Ninja Academy as a ninja myself," the skinny and tall ninja added.
Not long after Might Guy had left, the two ninjas regained consciousness. In their anger, they hadn't thought they were in the wrong and still felt resentful.
However, as time passed, they began to calm down and reflect.
They realized that Might Guy's display of strength was extraordinary. Although they hadn't used ninjutsu or ninja tools, and Might Guy hadn't employed any underhanded tactics, the fact that he had knocked out two chunin was astonishing.
Even if they had underestimated Might Guy and hadn't used their full strength, they were still chunin, not freshly graduated genin.
They inquired about Might Guy and learned that his reputation as a 'dead last' was outdated. The current Might Guy had risen to the top of his class at the Ninja Academy.
After discussing the matter, they decided to pay him a visit and apologize.
With the strength Might Guy possessed, in a few years, they would be no match for him. Although ninjas from the same village wouldn't typically kill each other, a brutal beating was not out of the question.
They felt it was unnecessary to hold a grudge over a verbal spat, especially against someone who might become a powerful figure in the future.
"These are our apologies. Please accept them," the skinny and tall ninja said, handing over some health supplements and a large bag of assorted vegetables.
"And here's some money for your medical expenses," the slightly plump ninja added, offering a stack of paper bills.
Might Dai looked at Might Guy, unsure of the situation's background, so he left the decision to his son.
"We'll accept the goods, but you can keep the money. I didn't get injured, so I don't need treatment," Might Guy replied, taking the supplements and vegetables but refusing the money.
Might Guy reasoned that he had already settled the score with them for insulting his father—each insult repaid with a punch. The supplements and vegetables could make up for their rudeness, but he wouldn't take their money.
Although he knew their family wasn't wealthy, he was certain his father would never accept such compensation.
"Please, just take it. It's not that much, only two ryo," the skinny and tall ninja urged.
"Admitting your mistakes is also a part of youth. However, we insist you take the money back," Might Dai refused politely.
Since Might Guy had made his decision, Might Dai wouldn't take the money either.
Finally, the two visitors exchanged glances and reluctantly took back the money.
"If someone gossips about you behind your back, it only means you're living a more colorful life than them. Scoffs and ridicule are their way of applauding your brilliance, their victory songs sung in your honor. Because, you see, I don't live to please them." Might Dai spoke with a fatherly tone of wisdom.
He had always maintained this mindset, ignoring the opinions of those around him. He took their words as a form of encouragement, for they were not people whose opinions he valued.
Might Guy did not respond to his father's words. While he could tolerate others calling him a dead-last, he could not stand anyone insulting or looking down on his father.
"However, the fact that you were able to gain the upper hand against a fully-fledged ninja shows that your youth is truly flourishing!" Might Dai said, giving his son a thumbs-up.
"You've grown so much, and I think it's time to pass on that technique to you." Might Dai said.
Although Might Dai himself had been a genin for many years, he believed that Might Guy's future would be different from his. Guy was more talented, and he had always intended to teach him the Eight Inner Gates.
However, because of the dangers of the Eight Inner Gates, Might Dai planned to wait until Guy became a ninja before teaching him. Now, he felt that Guy was ready to begin his training.
"What technique?" Might Guy asked, puzzled.
"You'll find out later tonight," Might Dai replied.
That evening, Might Dai brought Might Guy to his training ground and, with a solemn expression, said: "What I'm about to teach you is the Eight Inner Gates, not an ordinary taijutsu, but one of the forbidden techniques!"
"A forbidden technique!" Might Guy exclaimed, surprised.
Mu Yue had once told them that their breathing technique could be considered a secret art or a forbidden technique.
Might Guy was well aware of the power of the breathing technique, even though he had not yet mastered it. He knew that it could enhance his strength considerably and improve the effectiveness of his training.
The fact that his father might possess a taijutsu on par with Rock Breathing astonished Might Guy, for he knew that his father was a ninja who had never risen above the rank of genin.
"That's right. It took me a full twenty years to master the Eight Inner Gates, and it's the only taijutsu I can teach you," Might Dai continued.
"Open the Gate, Open! Life Gate, Open!... Gate of Limit, Open!"
Might Dai opened six gates in quick succession, unleashing an incredibly powerful chakra. The dense green aura enveloped his body, and the sudden burst of power stirred the air, pressing down the grass and rustling the leaves.
"So powerful!" Might Guy exclaimed, his eyes wide with amazement as he sensed his father's formidable aura.
"This forbidden technique is very strong, but it's also very dangerous, which is why I'm only teaching it to you now," Might Dai said gravely.
The Eight Inner Gates were too dangerous, and he felt it was important to make Guy understand the risks.
That night, Might Guy found it hard to fall asleep.
Earlier that day, his father had truly shocked him.
While he had always loved and respected his father, he hadn't thought of him as particularly strong. When the two ninjas had come to their door, Might Guy had deliberately stood in front of Might Dai.
He had never expected his genin father to be able to unleash such terrifying power, and Might Guy felt both excited and delighted.
However, he also had his concerns. The previous night, he had spent hours trying to learn the Eight Inner Gates and found it to be just as challenging as his father had warned. It was indeed a forbidden technique that had taken his father twenty years to master, and it was no simpler than Rock Breathing.
Might Guy worried that by practicing both Eight Inner Gates and Rock Breathing, his progress in the latter would slow down even more, disappointing Mu Yue.
Might Guy was a man of action, and the next morning, he spoke to Mu Yue about it.
"Teacher Mu Yue, I'm sorry, but my progress with the breathing technique might slow down from now on," Might Guy said.
"Not necessarily," Mu Yue smiled. "Perhaps the combination of two forbidden techniques will create a positive reaction."
"The Eight Inner Gates require a strong body, and Rock Breathing is the best way to train it."
"By the way, I also know a bit about the Eight Inner Gates. If you have any questions during your training, feel free to ask me."
"You also know the Eight Inner Gates, Teacher Mu Yue?" Might Guy was astonished. He knew that Mu Yue was not yet twenty years old, yet she had already mastered several forbidden techniques.
