Chapter 135: The Quirky Snape
Chapter 135: The Quirky Snape
The new student, Hermione, soon departed with her father.
As soon as she was out of sight, Fred wore an odd expression.
"She's memorized all the textbooks..."
"Yes, Fred, you heard right," George said, struggling to hold back a laugh. "We've indeed met another Percy."
Mrs. Weasley had rewarded Percy with a brand-new set of robes before he started school because he had also memorized all the textbooks beforehand.
"Which house do you think she'll be in?" George asked.
Fred raised an eyebrow. "Is there even a question? It has to be Ravenclaw."
"I think so, too," said George.
"No, I think she'll be in Gryffindor," Kyle suddenly interjected. "Don't forget, Percy is in Gryffindor."
"That's different, Kyle," Fred shook his head. "Our whole family is in Gryffindor."
George added, "In fact, we think Percy would have preferred Ravenclaw, but the Sorting Hat put him in Gryffindor."
Stroking his chin, Kyle suggested, "Why don't we make a bet?"
At the mention of a bet, Fred and George immediately pricked up their ears.
"What do you propose?"
"How about one Galleon?"
Kyle took out a gold coin and dangled it between his fingers. "If she's sorted into Ravenclaw, I'll pay each of you one Galleon."
"..."
Fred and George exchanged a glance, their eyes communicating swiftly.
In no time, they reached an agreement.
Fred, with a mischievous glint in his eye, addressed Kyle. "That's too boring. Let's spice things up a bit."
"How so...?" Kyle asked, intrigued.
"We bet on this!" George pulled out a piece of toffee from his pocket. "If that girl gets sorted into Ravenclaw, you have to eat this Fainting Fancy during the start-of-term feast."
"Are you sure?" Kyle's eyes narrowed, a hint of mischief dancing in their depths. "And what if she's sorted into Gryffindor?"
"Then we'll eat it," they said in unison.
Kyle's expression grew even more peculiar, and he struggled to contain his amusement as he took the toffee from George.
"Alright, you're on," he agreed, a smile tugging at his lips.
Fred and George extended their hands. "Then we have a deal?"
"A deal it is," Kyle affirmed, shaking their hands to seal the wager.
He had only intended to earn some pocket money, but since Fred and George were so enthusiastic, he didn't mind adding a bit of excitement to the mix.
The three boys released their hands and shared a smile, each knowing that the matter was settled without needing further discussion.
Kyle glanced curiously at the nearby platform entrance. "It's been quite some time. I wonder why Ron, Mrs. Weasley, and the others haven't come in yet."
"Not sure," Fred shrugged. "They might've run into some lost first-years."
"That happens a lot at King's Cross," George added.
Turning his attention back to the train, George continued, "Never mind that. Let's get on board, too. Lee Jordan mentioned in his letter that he got a huge spider as a pet. Has anyone seen him around?"
Speaking of pets...
Kyle's gaze instinctively drifted to the nondescript box he held in his hands.
Newt had sent a reply that very afternoon, agreeing to Kyle's request to adopt the Sniffle.
Now, the Sniffle was safely tucked away in the box, and Kyle had even given it a lovely name—Jerry.
After boarding the train, Fred and George quickly went off in search of Lee Jordan, while Kyle made his way towards the back of the train with his luggage in tow.
However, he had barely taken a few steps when the door to a nearby compartment swung open, revealing a familiar face.
"Kyle, over here!" Connor waved him over.
Kyle hurried over to join her.
The compartment was empty except for Connor, who eagerly closed the door as soon as Kyle entered.
"Mhm, I know," Kyle replied.
"I couldn't believe it at first, but...uh?" Connor's expression turned incredulous. "You...you knew about this?!"
"Yup." Kyle smiled. "I also know that Professor Snape's mother's maiden name was Prince."
Connor froze, her whole body stiffening in a daze.
This wasn't how she expected the plot to unfold at all.
Shouldn't Kyle be surprised or shocked? But...
Connor opened her mouth, her voice dry as she asked, "How...how did you know?"
"My dad told me." Kyle placed the box on the luggage rack. "He was classmates with Professor Snape, so he knows a bit about the situation."
This was indeed what Chris had told him during his visit to the school before the holiday break.
Kyle had only asked casually, not expecting Chris to actually know the truth.
Frowning, Connor asked, "Then why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"Would you have believed me?" Kyle countered.
Connor hesitated for a moment, then sadly shook her head. Before the events of the summer, she wouldn't have believed such an outrageous story.
"By the way..." Connor suddenly seemed to remember something, asking suspiciously, "Is it because of you that Professor Snape came to find me?"
Kyle didn't deny it.
"Take the money and bear the consequences?" He paused. "So, have those troublesome issues been resolved?"
The letter Kyle wrote on the first day of the holidays was addressed to Snape, and its contents were simple—an update on Connor's recent situation, with some minor exaggerations for effect, but mostly truthful.
"Yeah, it's resolved." Connor looked deeply into Kyle's eyes. "On the second day of the holidays, Professor Snape came to my house. He revealed his identity and took me to Gringotts."
Kyle, who was in the middle of rummaging for snacks, paused. "Why did he take you to Gringotts?"
"He had the goblins reclaim my family's vault and transfer everything inside to his own vault," Connor explained.
"Wait...you mean Snape moved everything from your family's vault to his own?" Kyle's confusion grew as he listened. What was Snape up to?
Was he preemptively stealing everything to prevent others from doing so? How was that any different from the others?!
Sensing Kyle's thoughts, Connor quickly clarified, "He didn't want to keep them for himself. He just wanted to help me safeguard them."
"I've heard that line too many times..." Kyle said with a hint of bitterness. "...anyone who believes it is a fool."
"It's true," Connor insisted. "In fact, there wasn't much gold left in my family's vault, and the only thing of value was probably our property deed. Professor Snape, on the other hand, has piles of galleons. He has no reason to deceive me."
"Let's hope so..." Kyle sighed. "Aside from that, what else did he do?"
"He bought the house next to mine and stayed there for the entire holiday," Connor replied.
A smile crept onto her face as she continued, "During these two months, he turned away everyone who came to my house."
"Snape bought the house next to yours?" Kyle's lips twitched.
Alright, he admitted that his initial thoughts were a bit uncharitable.
