Chapter 135: Green Grass Trial
Chapter 135: Green Grass Trial
Just like in a video game, players challenge instances and gain a lot of experience from them.
If there are more insightful Pokemon, they might even be able to learn some move usage skills from the riding goat.
And Naoki already had a name for this "instance".
The Green Grass Trial!
If other Pokemon are interested, they might be able to join in too.
Just like the Dragonite, who is single-mindedly practicing to become stronger.
It can test out the effects of Rain Dance + Hurricane + Thunder on challengers.
Naoki's heart stirred, but he needed to figure out the specifics later.
For now, he had to buy a weed whacker first.
Upon entering Shizu Town, the Riding Goat slowed down.
Its hooves clopped on the red brick path of the town, drawing Naoki's attention.
He gazed at the aesthetically pleasing red brick path and thought of the simple wooden trail in the ranch.
It was something he had put together with the extra wood from the ranch, and while it had a rustic charm and a clean look, its lifespan was just too short.
After a few heavy rains, the wood would soften and rot, and Naoki doubted it would last through the summer.
"Hmm, it's about time to properly plan out the roads in the ranch," Naoki thought.
Otherwise, on rainy days, the paths would be muddy, and one would end up with muddy feet after going out.
In such cases, having a red brick path would be a solution.
Since he was going to Claire's shop anyway, he could ask about it along the way.
After a few days of absence, Shizu Town was still bustling with people.
Being by the sea, it attracted many tourists from inland areas who came to enjoy the beach.
Speaking of the beach, Naoki recalled that Ivan had mentioned that every summer, the town held a grand fireworks display by the sea.
During that time, people would gather, setting up a lively market selling sushi, takoyaki, and oden snacks.
However, it was still early in the month, and that day was a long way off.
Naoki snapped back to the present and rode the Riding Goat towards Claire's shop.
When he arrived, Claire was sitting on a log next to the house, surrounded by a group of Grass-type Pokemon.
There were a Summer Form Tosserus, a sweet-scented Sweetly Scoot, an adorable Sprigatito, and a Mankey.
Claire was feeding Pokemon treats to the group, and when she heard Naoki approach, she turned and smiled upon seeing him.
"You've changed your ride," she remarked.
Naoki jumped off the Riding Goat and explained, "The Moto-Lizards are practicing moves back at the ranch, so I had Riding Goat bring me here."
He looked at the group of Pokemon and asked, "Are these Pokemon from the forest?"
Naoki remembered that Claire had mentioned before that some injured wild Pokemon would come to her for help.
Claire nodded gently. "Yes! It's rare for this group to gather together like this. I didn't have much to do today, so I came to play with them. I don't know why, but being with them always brings a sense of peace to my heart."
"Maybe that's the charm of Pokemon?" Naoki suggested with a smile, his gaze falling on the Sprigatito snuggling at Claire's feet. "Sprigatito is a very rare Pokemon!"
Sprigatito, the Grass-type starter Pokemon of the Paldea region, was incredibly popular.
Claire looked down at the Sprigatito and spoke gently. "Whether they are common or rare Pokemon, they are all the same to me. Maybe it's because I'm not a trainer."
Naoki paused for a moment, then agreed. "That makes sense.
"A weed whacker," Naoki replied. "The wild grass in the ranch grows too quickly, and the Riding Goat and Miltank don't eat much of it, so I plan to mow it all down."
Hearing this, Claire couldn't help but exclaim, "The Pokemon living in your ranch are so fortunate!"
Naoki raised an eyebrow, curious.
"It's rare to find a ranch owner who spends so much time and effort preparing special meals for them every day, like you do," Claire explained.
After all, both the Riding Goat and Miltank typically fed on wild grass, flowers, and occasionally, fruits from the few fruit trees they came across.
In contrast, those kept in ranches were usually fed store-bought hay and feed.
Naoki truly went above and beyond for his Pokemon.
Understanding her meaning, Naoki laughed, "That's why my gas bill is several times higher than that of other ranches!"
Claire giggled, then led the way, "Follow me!"
Inside, she pushed out several weed whackers from the warehouse, introducing them one by one:
"Here, these are all weed whackers. Each one has a different price and performance. The cheapest one over there is 5,000 Pokedollars. It's an older model and will be quite noisy when in use. The others are more or less the same, but the prices vary depending on the brand."
Naoki nodded thoughtfully as he inspected each one. Finally, he chose a push-style weed whacker for 7,000 Pokedollars.
Then, he asked, "By the way, do you have any red bricks? I want to build a red brick path in my ranch."
"Yes," Claire nodded. She recalled the size of Naoki's ranch and contemplated, "However, I suggest you finalize the layout of your ranch first. If you lay the brick path now and decide to build other facilities later, it might get in the way, and you'll have to redo the path all over again. That would be troublesome."
"That makes sense," Naoki agreed, nodding. He thought for a moment and decided to return to the ranch to plan properly before proceeding, "Then I'll head back and take a look. I'll come back once I've prepared everything."
"Of course, take your time. I'm always here," Claire assured him with a warm smile.
After leaving town, Naoki returned directly to the ranch.
The Riding Goat went back to its pen, while Naoki grabbed some paper and a pen, calling out to his Dragonite. He rode it into the air, surveying the entire ranch from above and sketching out the general terrain and the locations of the various buildings.
However, Naoki didn't immediately start planning the ranch. He had other matters to attend to first.
He handed the paper and pen to the Motostoke Pokemon, asking it to place them on the desk, while he pushed the weed whacker and began trimming the ranch's lawn.
The ranch was vast, and even with the addition of several facilities, a large area remained unused.
According to the previous owner's memories, it used to be a pasture.
The previous owner's grandfather had once raised several dozen Pokemon like Tauros and Miltank there.
As Naoki pushed the weed whacker, he mentally calculated the size of the ranch.
Currently, only about a quarter of the entire ranch was utilized.
He hadn't realized it before, but now, as he trimmed the grass, he exclaimed, "Wow, this ranch is huge!"
Naoki's mind wandered to the vast cherry blossom orchard at the Elrive family's ranch. He wondered how the family of four managed to tend to so many cherry trees.
It must be a lot of work!
