Chapter 134: Order of Merlin, What's the Use? Is There a Galleon Reward?
Chapter 134: Order of Merlin, What’s the Use? Is There a Galleon Reward?
A few days later, Ivan, eating breakfast and biting into a piece of bread, probed cautiously.
“Mom, what do you think about moving our shop to Diagon Alley?”
“What’s wrong? Isn’t here good enough?” Aisia paused, looking at him with a puzzled expression.
Of course not! What’s good about this place?
Ivan kept complaining in his mind. Since he returned, he had encountered a Werewolf riot, and a few days later, he got into a fight at the wizard market for no reason. Now, he had to be wary of the Fugitives who had been targeted by the Ministry of Magic.
“I’m just a bit worried. If we sell things to the Ministry, what if those targeted Dark Wizards seek revenge?” Ivan swallowed the bread in his mouth and sighed.
“They would need the ability to do so!” Aisia said indifferently.
However, seeing Ivan’s worried expression, Aisia thought for a moment and continued.
“Moving to Diagon Alley isn’t impossible, but the shop prices there are not cheap. A shop would cost at least ten thousand Galleons, and we can’t afford that right now.”
“So expensive?” Ivan exclaimed, remembering that in the original story, George and Fred opened Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley with a thousand Galleons given by Harry.
“Of course, that’s still relatively cheap. If you want a good location, it would cost over twenty thousand Galleons.” Aisia rolled her eyes. Diagon Alley was the commercial center of the entire magical world, with many shops passed down for centuries, and few were willing to sell.
Moreover, they would need a larger space for research and rest, or they would have to buy an additional house to live in.
Ivan nodded. The original story didn’t mention whether the Weasley Twins rented or bought their shop.
Now it seemed they must have rented it.
Thinking about this, Ivan felt a bit depressed. It looked like his plan to move would have to be postponed.
Twenty thousand Galleons was a huge sum!
Don’t think that the Ministry’s order for three thousand Galleons worth of magical items would help much. After deducting the costs of materials and research, they would be lucky to make half of that.
“Philosopher’s Stone, Philosopher’s Stone,” Ivan muttered to himself. If his Philosopher’s Stone hadn’t been taken by Professor Dumbledore, he would have as many Galleons as he needed.
Unlike now, where he only knew the method to create the Philosopher’s Stone but lacked the ability to do so.
Since he couldn’t rely on the Philosopher’s Stone, Ivan thought about the reward from the Quest, the Wolfsbane Potion. He wondered about the current state of the Werewolf wizards in Knockturn Alley, especially where they usually lived.
“Those werewolves are probably hiding in the ruins on the east side,” Aisia thought for a moment and then looked at Ivan curiously. “Why are you asking about this?”
“While at school, I overheard Professor Snape mention that certain potion ingredients like Asphodel and Sage Root might help werewolves regain some rationality during their transformations.”
“So I think further research could lead to a special potion that could solve the problem of werewolves going berserk after transforming. I call it the Wolfsbane Potion!”
Ivan spoke confidently, using Professor Snape’s name to lend credibility.
Otherwise, as a first-year student with no prior research on werewolves, creating the Wolfsbane Potion would be highly suspicious.
Of course, this was the internal explanation. Externally, Ivan thought it might be better to let Douglas take the credit.
After all, no one knew what this former deputy head of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries had been up to in Knockturn Alley for so many years, besides fighting, drinking, and gambling.
Even if Douglas had been hiding at home, focusing on researching the Werewolf problem and teaching Ivan, who had created the Wolfsbane Potion, it wouldn't be too far-fetched.
"Researching potions? That's not easy", Aisia instinctively shook her head in disagreement when she heard Ivan's explanation. But then she suddenly remembered the surprises and shocks Ivan had given her over the past few days, and inexplicably felt more confident. She chuckled lightly.
"If you really can come up with it, Werewolf wizards will definitely be vying to buy it."
"I'm more worried that those werewolves are too poor to afford the potion. Wouldn't I be wasting my time then?" Ivan shrugged helplessly and said.
"Let's talk about that after you've actually created the Wolfsbane Potion", Aisia nearly burst out laughing and made a move to wake Ivan up with a spoon, but he nimbly dodged.
The so-called Wolfsbane Potion hadn't even appeared yet, and someone was already worrying about whether Werewolf wizards could afford it.
"Anyway, I should be able to make it in a week at most", Ivan said casually.
Aisia wasn't that optimistic, but she didn't want to discourage Ivan, so she said seriously,
"If you really can develop a potion that keeps werewolves sane, the amount of Galleons you earn is secondary. More importantly, you'll be solving a major problem for the magical world, and winning a Third-Class Order of Merlin isn't out of the question!"
"Third-Class Order of Merlin, what's the point? Is it like the Muggles' Knighthood, with an annual allowance of Galleons?" Ivan asked, puzzled.
"Third-Class Order of Merlin, you get a hundred Galleons as a reward when you receive it, but don't expect more", Aisia said, finding it both amusing and exasperating. The Order of Merlin was the highest honor in the magical world, yet Ivan was only thinking about whether he would get Galleons.
Ivan sneered, thinking that the Ministry of Magic and the Order of Merlin were being stingy, giving such a small amount for the contribution he would make to the magical world.
But if he could use the award ceremony to advertise, that would make him feel better. With this thought, Ivan felt more at ease.
Seeing Ivan's expression, Aisia found it amusing but didn't continue the conversation about the Third-Class Order of Merlin. After all, it was still unknown whether the so-called Wolfsbane Potion could be developed. She then reminded him,
"The werewolves in Knockturn Alley are very dangerous. If you need to interact with them, it would be safer if Douglas goes with you."
Are you sure it will be safer?
Ivan looked at Aisia with a strange expression. He thought Douglas would be a hindrance. If it weren't for that guy's sudden outburst at the wizard market, there wouldn't have been so many complications.
"That was just an accident. Keep an eye on Douglas and make sure he doesn't drink. You're too dangerous to be out there alone, and I won't be able to rest easy", Aisia explained.
Due to the Ministry of Magic's order, she couldn't leave, or she would have gone herself.
"Actually, my Polyjuice Potion is already brewed. I can transform into someone else and go out safely", Ivan tried hard to get rid of the black-hearted headmaster, feeling that he would be safest on his own.
