Chapter 134: Cynthia's Invitation
Chapter 134: Cynthia's Invitation
The cold wind was biting.
From a distance, the towering peak of Mt. Coronet, which nearly spanned the entire Sinnoh region, could be seen. It was shrouded in a mist of white clouds and snow.
High in the sky, two figures were flying from Twinleaf Town to Celestic Town.
The "Pokemon Researcher Conference" was to be held in Celestic Town, located halfway up Mt. Coronet, with the "Celestic Town Historical Research Center" serving as the venue for the conference.
Jing He, perched on the back of his Dragonite, didn't feel much of the cold.
Dragonite was considerate enough to shield the air currents, keeping Jing He warm.
This made Gastly, who was riding on Jing He's back, very happy. It poked its head left and right, curious about Sinnoh, a place it had never been before.
However, Jing He's expression was far from relaxed.
His face was tense, his lips pressed tightly together, and his complexion was slightly pale.
Cynthia, riding on her Garchomp, noticed Jing He's discomfort and asked, slightly puzzled, "Are you afraid of heights?"
Jing He turned his head, his expression stiff and stubborn as he shook it.
He wasn't afraid of heights; he had even looked down from an airplane before.
"Hmm?"
Cynthia tilted her head, her face showing confusion.
Gastly, perched on Jing He's back, let out a sinister laugh, "Gastly, gastly!"
It patted Jing He's back and then extended a claw toward Cynthia, shooting it out.
"Gastly, gastly~"
He was afraid of speed.
The last time he was in Officer Jenny's car, the speed made it hard for him to speak throughout the journey.
"Speed?"
Cynthia gave Jing He a deep, scrutinizing look, then couldn't help but burst into laughter.
Even she couldn't have imagined that a tactical master, a strategist, and a Pokemon psychologist would be afraid of speed.
Even Garchomp couldn't help but laugh, its mouth wide open.
"Garchomp, garchomp!"
He couldn't handle it.
Seeing Cynthia laughing uncontrollably, Jing He's eyes widened in frustration.
Which man isn't afraid of speed?
Everyone is, right?
Cynthia's eyes twinkled with amusement as she teased, "If you keep glaring at me like that, I might just have Dragonite use 'Extreme Speed.'"
"Roar?"
Dragonite blinked its eyes.
Jing He's face immediately turned pale, and he looked pleadingly at Dragonite.
At the same time, he shakily took a few Energy Orbs from his pocket and stuffed them into Dragonite's mouth.
"Roar~"
Dragonite hadn't expected to earn a snack this way.
Cynthia placed a finger to her lips, her head tilted back as she looked at the hazy moon in the sky, her eyes playful. "Now, I'm hungry for a meal you've cooked."
Isn't that taking advantage of someone in a weak position?
But Jing He could only nod obediently.
Riding a dragon is no easy task.
"Alright," Cynthia smiled sweetly. "Dragonite, let's slow down."
She then gently patted Garchomp.
"Roar~"
Garchomp gave Jing He a sideways glance, its expression one of disdain.
Weakling.
Jing He didn't care about Garchomp's "contempt."
Garchomp had better pray he never caught a Dragon-type Pokemon, or else, he would make it dance the "Dragon Dance" in front of him every day.
The two dragons gradually slowed down.
Jing He let out a small sigh of relief.
Given some time, he would surely adapt.
Although the speed had slowed, they were still approaching Celestic Town at a decent pace.
As they flew closer to Mt. Coronet, tiny, crystalline snowflakes began to drift down from the sky, swirling like feathers.
Cynthia reached out and caught a snowflake, feeling the cold on her hand, her eyes bright with surprise.
"It's snowing!"
Jing He also looked up.
While Mt. Coronet was often covered in snow, and the wind usually blew the snow to the back side, neither Celestic Town nor their current position was within the range of the falling snow.
So, it really was snowing.
"Gastly~"
Gastly, perched on Jing He's back, slowly poked its head out of Dragonite's protective air current.
It opened its mouth wide and took a big breath.
Then it smacked its lips.
"Gastly~"
The taste was definitely different from the snow created by a skill.
Jing He glanced at it.
He wasn't surprised that Gastly had tasted the snow created by a Glalie's skill before.
"We're here."
Cynthia pointed ahead.
From a distance, small, glowing lights could be seen in the mountains.
As they got closer, a town nestled on a flat area halfway up the mountain came into view.
Celestic Town!
Thud.
Jing He's feet touched the ground, and he let out a silent sigh of relief.
He gently patted Dragonite's back in thanks, then pulled out a handful of Energy Orbs.
"Roar~"
Dragonite was delighted and quickly took them before flying off happily.
Jing He looked around.
Compared to Twinleaf Town and Canalave City, Celestic Town was definitely less bustling.
However, the town was more in harmony with nature, and the air, though colder than in Twinleaf Town, was much fresher than in Canalave City.
But a problem arose.
Where would they stay?
If they were in a bustling city like Twinleaf Town, they could easily find a place to stay, but did Celestic Town even have a Pokemon Center?
"What are you standing there for?"
Cynthia, seeing Jing He standing there in a daze, waved at him.
"Uh..."
Jing He followed Cynthia to a nearly entirely wooden villa.
This was... Cynthia's home?
He had often visited it in the games, but this was the first time in reality.
Cynthia pushed the door open.
Her Poke Balls on her waist opened on their own.
Garchomp and Lucario stood on either side of the door, their expressions extremely serious as they scrutinized Jing He.
Then, Cynthia, who had prepared slippers for Jing He, poked her head out of the door, her expression puzzled. "Why aren't you coming in?"
Jing He forced a smile and slowly walked to the door under the watchful eyes of Garchomp and Lucario.
As he passed them, he pulled out two more Energy Orbs.
This was quite different from what they were used to. Jing He combined his own experience with Mikoli’s expertise in making energy blocks to create this new treat.
Everyone who tried it loved it.
"Are we that familiar?"
Garchomp and Lucario exchanged glances.
Then, the two prideful Pokemon stiffened their necks and nodded simultaneously.
What an incredibly cute pair of slippers! Jing He looked at the pink Jigglypuff slippers on the floor.
"Feel free to sit down," Cynthia’s voice called from inside.
Shaking his head, under the watchful eyes of Garchomp and Lucario, Jing He finally slipped into the slippers and walked in.
Seeing Cynthia’s Pokemon outside, Jing He tossed a Poke Ball, summoning his own team, including Froslass and Beldum.
As for Gastly, it was already watching a show with Garchomp.
"Chu!"
Beldum, upon seeing Lucario, ran over with a hammer in hand, eyes wide with excitement.
And when Eevee saw Froslass, its eyes lit up, and it pounced over.
"Bu yi~~"
"Ou~~"
Soon, the room was filled with the joyful sounds of the two young Pokemon playing.
Jing He sat down on the sofa and began to observe the house.
Cynthia’s home was spacious, with a wooden structure. The wooden table, coffee table, and cabinets, along with simple wall decorations, created a warm and cozy atmosphere.
"Splat."
Geodude rolled a cup of hot water over to Jing He.
Jing He smiled and said, "Thank you."
"Splat, splat. o(////▽////)q"
Then, Roserade walked over, gracefully plucking a few light purple petals from its left hand and dropping them into the water.
Jing He: "..."
Watching the petals swirl and gradually sink, dyeing the water a light purple.
Flower tea?
But the problem was...
Roserade’s flowers were toxic! The red flowers on its right hand were highly potent and fast-acting, while the purple flowers on its left were slower and more chronic.
Jing He glanced at Geodude, which looked shy and embarrassed.
Roserade, in Jing He’s experience, was a Pokemon that spoke little, much like Lucario. But while Lucario was cool and aloof, Roserade was shy, which made it less talkative.
So, Jing He saw a hint of hope in Roserade’s eyes.
Jing He slowly picked up the teacup.
Roserade’s eyes filled with even more anticipation.
Gulp—
He discreetly swallowed.
Would he die?
Then he thought, how many times had he been poisoned by Gastly?
Besides, he always carried "Lum Berries" and "Antidotes" in his bag.
It should be fine.
With that thought, Jing He raised the teacup and took a sip.
A hint of sweetness mingled with the aromatic petals, followed by a slight bitterness.
His eyes brightened.
The taste was surprisingly good.
He immediately said to Roserade, "It’s delicious."
He smiled and patted its head.
"Rosa?" Roserade looked surprised.
It had made flower tea for many people, but no one had ever drunk it. It had always assumed the tea wasn’t good, but Jing He’s feedback gave it renewed confidence.
It immediately turned to prepare another cup with the red flowers from its right hand.
Seeing this, Jing He quickly said, "Roserade, that’s enough. One cup is fine. We can try something else next time."
He skillfully took a "Lum Berry" from his bag and bit into it.
"Rosa~~"
Roserade nodded, not insisting, but its joy was evident.
Feeling the sweetness of the "Lum Berry," Jing He nodded to himself.
Excellent.
With Milotic, Geodude, and Roserade, he had already won over three Pokemon, making things safer.
"Looks like you’re getting along well."
Cynthia, wearing an apron, poked her head out of the kitchen and smiled.
"You can—"
Cynthia can cook?
Oh no!
"Midnight snack, want some?" Cynthia asked.
"Sure!"
Jing He waved his hand.
Why not, it’s free!
Cynthia smiled and returned to the kitchen.
However, when they saw Cynthia peeking out of the kitchen, Garchomp, Lucario, Roserade, Eevee, and the others all shuddered in shock.
Oh no, oh no, oh no—
They hadn’t noticed that Bidoof had sneaked into the kitchen!
What should they do?!
Would they lose their home?
Would they lose their iron?
Sss—
Soon, a plume of black smoke rose from the kitchen.
"Is she making some fancy dish? What’s all the commotion?"
Sitting on the sofa, Jing He mused to himself, a hint of anticipation in his voice.
But soon, he realized something was wrong.
Why were Garchomp and the others sweating in the middle of winter?
!!!
Jing He shuddered.
He immediately stood up and rushed to the kitchen in two quick steps.
I’m such a fool, really, just for a free midnight snack...
Sss—
A cry of alarm and the sound of water dousing the fire echoed from the kitchen.
Two minutes later.
Cynthia, with a smudge of soot on her face, stood meekly at the kitchen door. Jing He, expressionless, posted a note on the kitchen door—
Gastly and Cynthia, no entry!
"Wha—Σ(дlll)?!"
After doing this, Jing He turned to Cynthia, who still held a spatula, and took a deep breath.
"You—"
Stare!
Before he could speak, he felt the intense gaze of Garchomp and Lucario.
Jing He’s expression stiffened. He snatched the spatula and, with a show of false bravado, continued, "—go take a shower first!"
"Okay."
In a shattered world.
Hmm?
A massive head slowly lifted, its crimson eyes flashing with confusion.
Why does it feel like this time it’s closer?
