Chapter 134: A Wife Like This, What More Could a Man Ask For!
Chapter 134: A Wife Like This, What More Could a Man Ask For!
Midday.
At the Deng family home.
In the dimly lit room, Guan Yongying sat at her new sewing machine, diligently making clothes after lunch. This brand-new sewing machine was one of the dowry items her parents had insisted on when she married into the Deng family.
In those days, sewing was a fundamental skill for women, and Guan Yongying was no exception. Now five months pregnant, her belly was already quite visible. With nothing else to do, she decided to start making clothes for her baby.
Time flies when you're focused on something. It wasn't until her sister-in-law called her for dinner that Guan Yongying realized it was already afternoon.
Though her back ached a bit from sitting for so long, she felt a sense of accomplishment looking at the little clothes she had completed.
During dinner, Guan Yongying noticed that her bowl contained a boiled egg, while everyone else was eating only vegetables and pickles. This had been the case for quite some time.
Originally, her in-laws had taken on a few hundred dollars in debt to bring her into the family. Later, they joined Old Jiu in planting Guiwei lychees and even took out a loan from the credit union.
The lychee saplings had only just been planted, and it would be at least a year before they saw any harvest. With so much debt, the family had to tighten their belts and live frugally.
However, since she became pregnant, no matter how much they saved, they never stinted on her food. While she couldn't have meat or eggs at every meal, she was always given either an egg or a couple of slices of pork each day. The meals were already much better than what the rest of the family got.
Seeing everyone else eat only vegetables and pickles while she had meat or eggs, Guan Yongying initially felt embarrassed. She told her mother-in-law she didn't need special treatment, but her mother-in-law laughed and said she wasn't eating just for herself; her baby needed nourishment too.
Though she understood, Guan Yongying knew how lucky she was to have such a caring mother-in-law. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law genuinely treated her well, her husband cherished her as if she were his most precious possession, and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law respected her. This life with her in-laws made Guan Yongying truly understand what happiness meant.
That night, before going to bed, Guan Yongying took out the money her parents had given her as a dowry. She kept thirty dollars for emergencies and handed the rest to her husband, saying, "Brother Fu, the family is going through tough times, but Mother still makes sure I have special dishes. Take this money to Mother tomorrow and ask her to add some meat or eggs to your meals too. You all work so hard from morning till night; your bodies can't take it if you don't eat well."
In the dim light, Deng Changfu saw the stack of money his wife handed him and was deeply moved. He held her hand and said, "Yongying, you are so kind. I must have done countless good deeds in my past life to deserve you. I'll tell Mother about your concern, but you should keep the money. Mother still has some savings from the loan we took out from the credit union."
Guan Yongying replied, "I am part of this family now. Whether Mother has money or not, I want to contribute my share. Take the money to her tomorrow. When the family's finances improve, won't you give me money too?"
Deng Changfu immediately responded, "Of course not! From now on, every penny I earn will be yours to manage."
"Then that's settled!"
Guan Yongying smiled and pushed the money back into his hands. "Alright, stop being so sentimental. I'm a bit tired from sewing today. I'm going to sleep!"
Holding the stack of money, Deng Changfu watched his wife lie down and close her eyes. His heart was filled with profound emotions. With his limited education, he struggled to find the words to express his feelings. Finally, he remembered the old saying: A wife like this, what more could a man ask for!
...
The next day.
Deng Changfu found a moment to slip the stack of money to his mother and relay the words his wife had spoken. "Mom, this is Yongying's heartfelt gift. Please accept it. We can pay her back when the lychees are harvested next year."
Changfu's mother looked down at the money in her hand and sighed, "Ah Fu, you really did marry a good wife. Old Jiu’s judgment of people is truly impeccable."
Deng Changfu nodded. "Yes, Old Jiu did a great job as a matchmaker!"
Changfu's mother didn't refuse the gift. She put the money away and said, "Alright, I'll keep the money for now. We'll pay Yongying back when the lychees are harvested next year. And we shouldn't be so frugal anymore."
Deng Changfu replied, "Mom, you can handle the arrangements!"
...
Originally, Deng Shirong had planned to improve the lychee orchard, then build a water wall, demolish the old house, level the ground, and consider paving it with cement.
But as the saying goes, plans often fall short of changes. Now that his eldest daughter-in-law was pregnant, it wasn’t a good time to start construction.
Since it wasn't urgent, Deng Shirong decided to put it off until the baby was more stable. With nothing to do, he headed over to Deng Yuncai’s house.
After the New Year, Deng YunGui was the first to start building his house, and Deng Yuncai had followed Deng Shirong’s advice to build three large brick and tile rooms. The foundation had been laid recently, and the walls were now being built. Deng Shirong wanted to check how much longer it would take to finish.
It took less than three minutes for Deng Shirong to reach Deng Yuncai’s house, where he saw that the walls were about two-thirds complete.
"Uncle Jiu!"
"Old Jiu!"
Seeing Deng Shirong approach, the workers all greeted him.
Deng Shirong nodded and looked at Deng Yuncai, who was busy building the walls. "It looks like you’ll finish the walls tomorrow!"
Deng Yuncai smiled. "Yes, we should be done by tomorrow!" He then climbed down from the wooden scaffold.
Deng Shirong asked, "Yuncai, your house will be finished soon. Have you thought about getting some furniture made?"
Deng Yuncai shook his head and laughed bitterly. "Uncle Jiu, we can’t afford new furniture right now. At most, we can get a bed frame for Yuan. The rest will have to wait until he earns more money."
Deng Shirong didn’t dwell on the issue. "Your house will be finished in a few days. If you have no objections, I’ll take some time to visit the girl’s family and speak on Yuan’s behalf."
Deng Yuncai quickly said, "Of course, I have no objections. I just want to know where this girl is from."
Deng Shirong replied, "I’ll talk to her parents first and let you know later."
Deng Yuncai said, "Alright, I trust you completely to look out for Yuan’s best interests."
Deng Shirong smiled. "Alright, it’s settled. I’ll take care of it in a couple of days and try to get a good result."

This back pain is really killing me. Sitting for too long makes it unbearable. Fellow readers, if you have any monthly votes to spare, please consider giving a couple.
