Chapter 133: Sowing New Seeds
Chapter 133: Sowing New Seeds
"Tomorrow... nothing special planned."
There was no room for hesitation; hesitation would only lead to defeat!
"I know a place that serves a cuisine you might like," Mira said, tightening her grip on the clothes she was holding. "Why don't we try it out tomorrow?"
"Sure."
On his way back, Rod walked with a spring in his step, only remembering he had forgotten to call Crab when he reached his front door.
No big deal, he could consider it extra training.
Upstairs and inside, Rod felt the need to tidy up a bit.
"Come out, Wurm!"
A small, white, fluffy ball, slightly larger than a basketball, appeared with its tongue hanging out, blinking its pitch-black eyes. There was no food in front of it.
It turned around, looking for a table, but there wasn't one in sight.
But the environment seemed familiar. Oh, right, he was home.
"Rrrrrrrrrrrr~~" Although there was no food, Wurm still seemed cheerful.
"It's great to see you so full of energy. I'm about to clean up, see..."
"Rrrrrrrrrrrr..." Wurm lay on its side, tongue lolling, with an expression that said, 'This Wurm is already dead, please do not disturb.'
Fine, if he didn't want to help, that was okay. Last time, Rod had decided not to ask it to help clean under the bed anyway.
It wasn't a lot of work, so Rod quickly dusted and grabbed Wurm to take a shower.
The current weather made a cold shower a bit of a punishment, so he had to heat some water.
Stereographic magic could help a little, but it wasn't very convenient. Tomorrow, he would buy a dedicated magic crystal.
When it was time to sleep, Rod discovered a new use for Wurm. The little guy was warm and cozy, making it more comfortable than any hot water bottle.
When it got colder, he would have it warm his bed every night. After all, even the coldest weather here was nothing compared to the Howling Abyss.
...
Goodman didn't come to do business in the morning.
It was unclear whether it was because business had been too good the past few days and he wanted a break, or if he was at home researching new carving techniques.
Most of the holiday decorations on the street had been taken down, making the area feel a bit quieter compared to the festival.
Rod changed into autumn clothes: blue jeans, a white T-shirt, and a light beige long-sleeved jacket.
The Fairy Tail emblem on his T-shirt and the back of his jacket had been hand-printed by Mira.
He wondered if he would still need to show the emblem on his arm when he went on missions wearing these clothes.
"Good morning, Rod. Anything good happening today?"
"Good morning, Marcus." Rod didn't want to share the details with this big mouth. "I'm going to practice a new receiving magic today. Want to spar?"
Marcus declined, "Spare me, why don't you go find Gray?"
Rod sighed, "Gray's avoiding me. He said he needs to talk to Loki more over the next few days and might even go on a job with him. He told me to stay far away."
Marcus said, "Loki still likes to avoid you, but he's actually quite strong."
"Really? I can't figure him out. Is he close to Gray?"
"It seems they went out together once and accidentally attracted a beautiful and bold woman," Marcus said with a complex expression. "One of them found it troublesome, while the other was good at handling it. Their relationship has only gotten better since then."
"Ha... ha, just like Loki and Gray. They really do fit together in strange ways," Rod said, admiring the odd compatibility of the two.
In the morning, he did some routine tasks like wiping tables.
Mr. Cook rarely came out of the kitchen, but today he sought out Rod—apparently, he missed Wurm.
Rod summoned Wurm for him, but he couldn't figure out what Mr. Cook liked about it.
Did he like how it enjoyed eating?
Well, it was good to be on good terms with the chef.
When the Master arrived, Rod went to the yard to try receiving a new monster. Mira came along this time.
So, Rod made sure to take a few extra steps back.
The target this time was an Ancient Stone Golem. Rod was curious if receiving it would grant him extra lives.
Rod summoned the Ancient Stone Beetle and placed his hand on its leg.
"Absorb!"
The Stone Beetle transformed into a beam of light and disappeared, enveloping Rod in its glow. When the light faded, Rod stood at two meters tall, his body now the same color as the Stone Beetle, as if he were wearing a suit of stone armor. His chest and limbs were adorned with glowing blue patterns, adding a touch of technology to his appearance.
Rod summoned a River Crab and connected with its perspective to observe himself.
"This is... Shield Mountain? My arms aren't that thick. The Thing from the Fantastic Four? But I'm not that ugly. Lava Golem? I don't have as many spikes..."
He moved around, striking a few poses, and felt pretty cool.
He tapped his chest, feeling the hardness was much greater than the River Crab's armor.
"Another one of these styles, huh?" Makarov remarked. "This time it's earth magic, right?"
"Yeah, it seems to focus on defense, with some accompanying magic. I think I can..."
Before he could finish, Rod sank into the ground as if he were falling into water.
A few seconds later, a stone head popped out of the ground, speaking in a muffled but amused voice: "This magic is so much fun! I can move through the earth like I'm swimming!"
He tried freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke, enjoying the sensation.
He couldn't help but think of the Doraemon gadget that allowed Nobita to move through the ground similarly.
In a way, this fulfilled a small childhood dream.
Mirajane laughed, feeling genuinely happy for him. He had grown stronger.
Makarov watched for a moment, then shook his head. "This went well. I'll head back now. Mirajane, stay with him."
"Okay."
Mirajane watched Rod swim through the ground, and she couldn't resist reaching out her hand. Light patterns appeared on her arm, but her magic flowed without any change.
"Am I the only one who's not making progress?"
Makarov's voice came from behind her. "Of course not. You move forward every day. Even if your magic hasn't fully recovered, your heart has never stopped."
"Master..." Mirajane turned to see Makarov, his hands behind his back, smiling warmly.
"Losing loved ones is like a plow cutting through our hearts. It undoubtedly causes pain. But at such times, we have two choices: we can choose to dwell on past sorrows, rush through the field without loving anyone again; or we can choose to stand up from the pain, sow new seeds as we walk through the field, and nurture more love.
No matter which you choose, you are always moving forward. And remember, the guild, everyone, is always behind you."
"Master..." Mirajane bit her lip.
Behind her, a stone man was swimming through the earth.
No, she turned around, and the stone man had already dispelled the magic, standing before her with a mix of admiration and complaint in his eyes.
Behind her... was the Master, the noisy tavern, and the entire guild.
Makarov felt a bit guilty under Rod's accusing gaze. "I was just speaking from the heart. I didn't mean to make her cry."
"I know, but if you keep this up, I might have to file a complaint with the Council for misconduct."
"It's not that serious!"
"Or I could tell the guild that you're bullying Mirajane and have everyone shun you?"
"…You and Mirajane can limit my drinking instead."
Mirajane chimed in, "Master, you said that yourself."
Rod nodded. "Yeah, I heard it. I'll be the witness."
Makarov's mouth dropped open. "No way!"
"It's decided." Mirajane laughed.
She looked at the noisy tavern, then at Rod.
Sow... new seeds, huh?
