Chapter 133: An Unexpected Turn of Events
Chapter 133: An Unexpected Turn of Events
"Knock it off," Lee Jordan chided, interrupting the twins' playful banter. He turned to Albert and asked, "Can you fix it?"
"It's hard to say. I won't know until I try," Albert replied, tucking 'The Biography of Uric' into his bag and glancing at the bickering twins. "If I can't fix this book, you won't have to return it."
"Why?" George asked, bewildered.
"Do I need to spell it out? If Madam Pince finds out about your antics, she'll definitely bar you from the library," Albert huffed. "Not returning a book just means you can't borrow any more from the library. Big deal."
Many of the homework assignments given by Hogwarts professors required students to find their own information in the library. If they were banned from the library, the consequences were obvious—they wouldn't even be able to complete their homework properly.
"By the way, you haven't finished your History of Magic homework yet, have you? It's due tomorrow," Albert casually reminded them. "Don't forget about that."
"Ah! Don't remind me!"
The trio seemed to suddenly remember this, and they let out a unison groan before hurrying back to the library to continue their tedious homework.
Albert watched their retreating figures and shook his head imperceptibly. He glanced at the so-called treasure map in his hand and turned back toward Gryffindor's dormitory.
"It failed?"
The damage to the pages of 'The Biography of Uric' had not been repaired by the mending spell.
Initially, Albert thought his spell had failed, but when he tried it on other pieces of paper, he found that he could still successfully repair them. But why had it failed with this book?
"I just can't figure it out," Albert muttered, staring at the book in front of him. He picked it up and carefully flipped through the pages, searching for anything that made it unique.
'The Biography of Uric' was written by Radolfo Pittman. Albert had read this book recently: Uric was from Ravenclaw College, and his eccentric behavior was so memorable that people had included a short biography of him on Chocolate Frog Cards.
According to the book's description, Uric's behavior was indeed peculiar.
Moreover, there was a period when Uric tried to prove that the calls of the Shrieking Shack were beneficial to one's health, and he listened to the shrill cries for three whole months... As everyone knew, the incessant chirping of the Shrieking Shack drove people insane.
There was nothing special about this book, yet Albert still couldn't understand why his spell had failed. He placed the book on his cabinet and suddenly remembered something. He took out the piece of parchment from his pocket and stared at it for a long time, intending to put it back into the book.
However, Albert's hand paused, and he drew out his wand, gently tapping the map and chanting, "Reveal your secrets!"
Nothing happened.
"Hmm, I must be overthinking things," Albert muttered, picking up the parchment and examining its contents before falling into a brief silence.
"I guess I've been hanging out with Fred and the others too much, even I'm becoming a joker," Albert mocked himself, putting the parchment back into the book and turning to leave the dormitory.
Little did he know that as he walked away, the parchment he had tucked back into the book underwent a subtle change.
As Albert entered the common room, he noticed someone waving at him.
"Anderson." The person calling him was a large-framed girl who stood before him with an air of confidence.
"Yes?" Albert was already quite tall for his age, but this girl still towered half a head above him.
"It's been a challenge finding you. I've been looking for ages," the girl said with a hint of complaint. "Here, this is for you."
"For me?" Albert asked, puzzled, but he still took the note she offered, remembering to thank her.
"Professor Broad wanted me to tell you that if you're free, it would be best to stop by his office before 8 pm tonight," she explained.
"Oh, I see. Have some candy," Albert said, reaching into his pocket and offering a handful of candies to the girl.
The girl eyed Albert curiously, as if trying to figure something out.
"What is it?" Albert noticed her scrutinizing gaze and furrowed his brows slightly.
"I quite like the chocolate flavor. Thanks for the treat," she said, popping a candy into her mouth. "Everyone says you're a genius, Lucky Albert."
Albert, who had been about to open the note, paused and looked up at her in astonishment.
"I wouldn't call myself a genius. I just put in a little more effort than others," Albert replied, raising his hand and using his thumb and index finger to indicate a small amount.
"Haha, you're quite funny. Keep it up, and make sure you surpass Isabel McDougall," she encouraged, patting Albert's shoulder.
Albert winced in pain, feeling like his shoulder was about to dislocate from the force of the pat.
"Thanks for the candy, it was delicious," she said before turning to leave.
"What's this? You're getting cozy with Craig?" A voice suddenly sounded in Albert's ear as he was rubbing his shoulder. It was Erin, the violent beater, who had appeared behind him without warning.
"Craig?" Albert was taken aback by the name, but then he realized what was going on and explained, "She delivered a message to me. Professor Broad seems to have something to discuss."
Albert opened the note, and its contents were similar to what Craig had said. He checked his pocket watch and hurriedly bid Erin farewell before rushing off.
"I wonder what Professor Broad wants with me?" Albert pondered, filled with curiosity. Nonetheless, he decided to head to the Dark Magic Defense office to find out.
A few minutes later, Albert stood before the Dark Magic Defense office door. He took a deep breath and knocked.
"Come in."
The person who opened the door was a middle-aged wizard in his fifties, wearing glasses and sporting a mildly disheveled head of red hair. A gentle smile played on his face.
Albert was stunned. He looked past the middle-aged wizard, scanning the office, but he didn't see Professor Broad. Confused, he asked, "Where's Professor Broad?"
"He just went to the library. He'll be back soon," the middle-aged wizard replied with a smile. "Professor Broad told me to let you in if you arrived. He'll be back shortly."
"Professor Broad is looking for me?" Albert secretly sized up the wizard before him, his gaze also drifting over the messy parchments on the desk.
A fleeting look of bewilderment appeared on Albert's face. He had never considered this aspect before.
"By the way, I haven't introduced myself yet. I'm Mog, Mog McDougall," the middle-aged wizard suddenly said, offering an introduction. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
