Chapter 132: The Necessity of Vigilance
Chapter 132: The Necessity of Vigilance
Jiang Cheng was startled by the beeping sound coming from his phone.
"What's wrong?" Red Tea's voice sounded in his ear.
At this moment, the two had already entered the city and even reached the residential area, arriving at the foot of Bai Wei's building.
As for Nightingale, she had left the car after entering the city and wasn't interested in what happened next.
"Nothing," Jiang Cheng said, scratching his head as he looked at Red Tea's concerned expression. "I just didn't expect the call to be hung up so abruptly."
"That's quite normal," Red Tea said with a smile. "Your senior sister, Bai Wei, is a kind-hearted person, but her master isn't. I've dealt with him a few times, and it's hard to say whether he's a good or bad person. But I can tell you that he's very hostile towards people like us."
"I see," Jiang Cheng nodded.
Recalling Bai Wei's words before she hung up, he realized that the Dawn Society might not be as good as it seemed. She must have learned this from her master.
It was hard to tell whether this information was true or not.
As the saying goes, one should not harbor ill intentions towards others, but it is wise to remain vigilant. It's always better to be cautious and keep an extra eye out.
"Well, it's getting late. We should go up and pick her up. If we delay, we might run into trouble," Red Tea reminded him.
"Mhm," Jiang Cheng replied.
He quickly went upstairs and reached the door of Bai Wei's house, knocking on it.
"Knock, knock."
The dull sound of his knocks broke the silence in the hallway.
Someone upstairs heard the noise and curiously peered down the stairs, glancing a few times.
As Jiang Cheng knocked on the door, he felt both anticipation and apprehension.
He worried that something might have happened to his family, and they weren't inside.
Fortunately, his worries were unfounded. Three seconds later, a woman's cautious voice came from inside, "Who is it? Who's knocking?"
"Aunt Chen, it's me, Little Cheng," Jiang Cheng replied upon hearing the familiar voice.
"Is it really you, Little Cheng?" a surprised voice asked from within.
Soon, footsteps approached the door, but the person inside didn't open it immediately. Instead, they peered through the peephole and, upon seeing Jiang Cheng, quickly opened the door.
"Grandma," Jiang Cheng said, hugging the elderly woman tightly.
"Little Cheng, you finally came. Grandma was so worried," the old woman said, her eyes welling up with tears of emotion.
Chen Sao, standing beside her, wiped her tears.
These past few days, they had mostly stayed indoors, only going out to throw away trash and make phone calls at the roadside, spending a few coins to call Bai Wei. They inquired about Jiang Cheng's situation and were assured that he was fine and had even visited the martial arts academy the previous day. Bai Wei told them to stay put until the situation stabilized, and they could return.
The three women naturally felt some relief, but not seeing Jiang Cheng each day made it hard for them to fully relax.
However, Jiang Cheng suddenly appeared before them.
"Jiang Cheng," Lin Yue looked at Red Tea, who was standing behind him, and asked in confusion, "Didn't Sister Bai come with you?"
Her words made the elderly woman and Chen Sao realize that she was right.
Indeed, Sister Bai had other matters to attend to and couldn't keep troubling her. Jiang Cheng instructed them to pack their bags, as they would be leaving soon.
The three women weren't surprised by this outcome.
(End of Chapter)Despite this not being a place where they could stay for long, the slums were their true home.
Although they were reluctant to leave, their hearts were heavy with sorrow.
Within a few minutes, the three had packed their bags.
There wasn't much to pack, as they hadn't brought many belongings, and since they hadn't stayed long, they were always prepared to leave at any time.
The rooms were also tidied up, leaving them clean and neat.
"Xiao Cheng, what about the keys?"
"Just leave them in the house."
Jiang Cheng remembered that Bai Wei had a spare key.
"Okay."
After putting away the keys and checking to ensure nothing was left behind, they locked the front door.
After placing their luggage, Jiang Cheng opened the car door and gestured for the three to sit in the back seat. Everything seemed the same as when they arrived, except for the change in the driver's seat.
"Brother Hong Cha, we're troubling you," Jiang Cheng said.
"Why are you saying that? Buckle up, let's go."
Hong Cha smiled and slowly drove the car away.
In the back seat, Lin Yue silently withdrew her gaze from the residential building, her expression turning somber.
The few days she had spent here were the most wonderful memories of her life. How wonderful it would be if she could live in such a place forever.
"Xiao Cheng."
Aunt Chen's voice rang out, "What's the situation in the slums now? Have the Wild Wolf Gang left? Did the Iron Fist Gang arrive?"
"Yes."
Jiang Cheng organized his thoughts.
Of course, he couldn't possibly tell the truth.
"The Wild Wolf Gang left a couple of days ago, and then the Iron Fist Gang came and collected management fees from each household."
"How much is it per month?"
Aunt Chen clutched her clothes tightly.
"1,500."
"1,500?"
"That's so high!"
The three of them were startled.
"Yes, but Grandma, Aunt Chen, you don't need to worry. From now on, we won't have to pay this anymore," Jiang Cheng said with a smile.
"We don't have to pay anymore?"
"Why not, Jiang Cheng?" Yue asked curiously, her eyes widening.
"Because we don't have to go back."
As his words fell, the car suddenly became quiet, and the three in the back seat exchanged glances.
Not going back? Where would they live then?
"Grandma, Aunt Chen, let me keep you in suspense for a while. Once we arrive, you'll know."
Jiang Cheng smiled mysteriously.
Lin Yue's heart warmed.
Could it be that Jiang Cheng was suggesting that they continue living in the outer district? Because if it were any other place in the slums, they would still need to pay the management fee.
Could it be true? Could such a huge blessing fall upon her?
But if that were the case...
Lin Yue's heart was filled with conflicting emotions.
Aunt Chen also guessed Jiang Cheng's intentions.
However, no one knew the Jiang family's situation better than her. These outer district houses cost at least three to four hundred thousand, how could Jiang Cheng possibly come up with so much money all of a sudden?
The elderly woman was even more confused.
As the car drove through the streets, Aunt Chen and the others' emotions fluctuated with each turn.
Finally, at an intersection, the car turned and drove a short distance before entering a residential area.
This area didn't seem much different from the one where Bai Wei's house was located.
Lin Yue's eyes lit up, but her heart was in her throat, fearing that it might be a false hope.
Finally, the car stopped in front of a five-story building.
As Jiang Cheng unbuckled his seatbelt, he turned and smiled at the three, "Grandma, Aunt Chen, Xiao Yue, we're here. Get out, I'll show you our new home."
