Chapter 131: Guardian of the Gate
Chapter 131: Guardian of the Gate
"I haven't performed my normal summon this turn yet."
Maze Brother took a deep breath and drew another card.
"I summon the 'Emperor of the Sea' in attack mode!"
Emperor of the Sea: ATK 1700
"Then, I'll set a card and end my turn."
With a stoic expression, Maze Brother concluded his turn.
He was beginning to feel that he might have underestimated the student duo before him.
When accepting the commission, he hadn't taken the duel too seriously since it was described as a punishment duel from the Duel Academy, and their opponents were merely first-year students. However, even though they hadn't officially clashed yet, both sides were already feeling a hint of tension.
Their three Great Demons had already lost two in the first turn, one banished to the shadow realm and the other sent to another dimension. Such an occurrence was rare even in their extensive history of dueling together.
Gong and his brother exchanged a glance, their eye contact conveying their shared thoughts.
This duel might not be as easy a victory as they had anticipated.
Of course, losing was out of the question; at most, they would need to put in a little more effort. After all, they were the legendary duelists who had faced Yugi Muto; it would be a joke if their team were to lose to a couple of freshmen from the academy.
It was Judai's turn now. "My turn, draw!
First, I activate the spell card 'Pot of Greed' and draw two more cards.
Then, I'll set a monster in attack position and place two face-down cards on the field. End turn!"
Similar to the anime, the academy was using a tag-team rule where neither side could attack during the first turn. Only after the first round of turns for all four duelists—which would end with Judai's turn—would they be able to enter the battle phase.
Among the spectating students, many held their breath in anticipation.
The true battle was about to begin.
"My turn, draw."
Maze Brother's turn came again.
"I activate the spell card 'Call of the Haunted'!"
Maze Brother discarded a card from his hand to the graveyard. "'Call of the Haunted' allows me to target a monster in my graveyard and Special Summon it.
The monster I choose to bring back is the 'Water Spirit - Ska' that was sent to the graveyard by your 'Brain Control' last turn!"
The shadowy figure of the Water Spirit appeared on the field, about to return from the graveyard. But before Maze Brother could do anything else, Judai interrupted.
"Not so fast! I activate my face-down trap card, 'Hero Rule 1 - Five Freedoms'! (Original card)
Exclude from play up to five cards combined from both players' graveyards!"
The Maze Brothers' faces twisted in surprise. "What did you just say!?"
"Therefore, I exclude 'Water Spirit - Ska', 'Sacrificial Doll', 'Landmine Spider', and 'Dark Designator' from your graveyard!" Judai declared.
The graveyard's vortex opened, and the shadowy figure of the Water Spirit floated out, only to be banished to the far end of another dimension.
In one fell swoop, Judai also emptied their opponents' graveyard, leaving it completely barren.
With no valid targets for "Call of the Haunted", Maze Brother had wasted two more cards.
His bald head seemed to sprout another "well" character.
Mizawa, observing from the stands, wore a complicated expression.
"Well played... but," he hesitated, as if unsure whether to continue.
"You think it's not quite his style, right?" Asuka asked.
"I must be imagining things," Mizawa shook his head, unwilling to elaborate further.
What else could he say?
Could it be a case of "birds of a feather flock together"? However, he had to admit that it was quite entertaining to see the legendary duelists flustered and frustrated. He was thoroughly enjoying the show.
"To think that you would release our brothers' two Great Demons so quickly; I must commend you," Maze Brother said, his voice deep and serious. "But if you think it will be this easy, you are greatly underestimating us."
He glanced at his younger brother. "I'll be borrowing your monster for this turn."
"No problem, big brother."
Maze Brother declared, "I activate the effect of 'Emperor of the Sea'. This card can be used as two Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a LIGHT attribute monster.
So, I'll use 'Emperor of the Sea' as two Tributes for a Tribute Summon!"
The Emperor of the Sea seemed to split into two, dividing into two beams of light that sank into the vortex on the field.
A brilliant flash of light and crackling thunder filled the air, and a mighty figure with the character for "thunder" written in gold on its chest appeared in a bolt of lightning.
"Thunder Spirit - Sannga, I summon you!!!
Thunder Spirit - Sannga: ATK 2600
"I activate the face-down card my little brother left on the field—the Spell Card, 'Dimension Fusion'! By paying 2000 Life Points, both players can Special Summon as many banished monsters as possible!" Maze Brother declared.
[Maze Brothers: LP 8000 → LP 6000]
Hearing this, the students observing from the sidelines couldn't help but be astonished.
"Banished monsters... Could it be...?"
"That's right," Maze Brother continued. "Thanks to you, the only banished monsters are ours, so only we can perform a Special Summon!"
Maze Brother laughed heartily.
"Return from the banished dimension! Appear before us now!
Water Spirit-Ska!
Wind Spirit-Syuga!"
A storm of wind and water erupted, and the two great spirits appeared one after the other. The green whirlwind and the tsunami-like torrent revealed the characters for "wind" and "water" emblazoned on the chests of the two mighty spirits, standing alongside the "thunder" spirit, forming a three-colored barrier.
[Water Spirit-Ska: ATK 2500]
[Wind Spirit-Syuga: ATK 2400]
With the simultaneous summoning of the three great spirits, a student exclaimed, "They've summoned all three great spirits at once!"
"As expected of legendary duelists, they're not that easy to deal with," Mizawa said in a low voice. "It seems that angering them has only made their offense more fierce."
"Battle Phase!
First, the 'Wind Spirit-Syuga' will attack that wall-like monster, 'Yellow Disturbance'!" Maze Brother commanded.
The Wind Spirit brought its palms together, and in an instant, the dueling field seemed to be projected with dense dark clouds, like a gloomy sky. The howling wind picked up, kicking up dust and debris. The wind blades in the storm acted like countless sharp blades slicing through the air, emitting a piercing shriek as they swept towards the opposing field's face-down monsters.
[Yellow Disturbance: DEF 1000]
The hapless Yellow Disturbance had no resistance against the storm and was instantly blown to pieces, turning into a golden light.
"I activate my face-down Trap Card, 'Disturbance Crowd'! When a face-up 'Disturbance' monster on my field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, return that monster to the Deck and shuffle it!" Judai explained. (Anime-only card)
The destroyed Yellow Disturbance transformed into a beam of golden light and flew back into the Deck, causing the Deck in the Duel Disk to automatically shuffle.
The top two cards were then automatically ejected.
"And after that, draw two cards from the Deck and discard one card from your hand."
Judai drew some cards and then discarded one from his hand to the Graveyard.
"The card I just discarded is the Magic Card, 'Disturbance Magic'!" Judai revealed.
A golden light shone from the Graveyard zone of the Duel Disk, and the Magic Card automatically reappeared.
"The effect of 'Disturbance Magic' activates. When this card is sent from my hand or field to the Graveyard, add one each of 'Green Disturbance,' 'Yellow Disturbance,' and 'Black Disturbance' from my Deck to my hand."
Three more cards automatically popped out and were drawn into his hand, and the Deck shuffled itself again.
"So what if you have all those weak monsters?" Maze Brother said dismissively. "The attack continues.
Now, I'll use 'Water Spirit-Ska' to attack the face-down monster on your field!"
This time, the monster that was hit was the one Judai had set face-down. The face-down monster was revealed to be a fluffy little ball with pristine white wings.
"Kurikuri!"
[Winged Chestnut Ball: DEF 200]
The tiny Chestnut Ball was destroyed by the storm, but it immediately released a milky-white energy shield that protected the two duelists within it.
"The effect of Winged Chestnut Ball! When this card is destroyed, all battle damage I take this turn becomes zero!" Judai explained.
"A damage-negating ability? Well, if that's the case, there's no point in continuing the attack. End of Battle Phase," Maze Brother said, raising his arm.
"Now, witness our ultimate trump card!
I sacrifice the 'Thunder Spirit-Sannga,' 'Wind Spirit-Syuga,' and 'Water Spirit-Ska' on the field!"
The three spirits were engulfed by pillars of lightning, wind, and water, and their energies soared into the sky, merging into one at the duelists' command.
"When the powers of the three great spirits become one, the guardian of generations appears! Behold, our brothers' ace—
—The Guardian of the Gate!"
The three spirits combined, with the characters for "thunder," "wind," and "water" inscribed on their chests, and a three-colored spirit descended with mighty force, causing the entire dueling field to tremble as if in awe of its presence!
[Guardian of the Gate: ATK 3750]
The Guardian of the Gate had been summoned!!!
