Chapter 13: The Expected Visitor
Chapter 13: The Expected Visitor
At noon that day, Lin Sai finished his lunch on time and received a small pouch of old copper coins.
Following the cultivation method for Life Essence, he checked his Attribute Panel.
Under the Life Essence attribute, a new Experience Bar had indeed appeared, but the progress was barely noticeable.
"Cultivating Essence is not like learning Universal Script; it's a long and tedious process," Lin Sai sighed.
After this reflection, he left with the copper coins.
Two days ago, Red Moon had purchased a blanket and snow boots, but that was all. It was not enough for the additional Lin Sai who had appeared during the winter.
So, she decided to make it a small trial.
She gave Lin Sai the money and asked him to go to the Hidden Frontier Town alone to purchase the necessary supplies.
Red Moon then stated that someone would be buried today.
She needed to guard the cemetery and care for the deceased, so she couldn't leave easily.
At the entrance of the small chapel, Red Moon watched as Lin Sai's figure gradually disappeared into the distance.
Time passed, minute by minute.
Instead of returning to the chapel behind her, Red Moon stood at the door, silently waiting for something important.
Half an hour later, the expected visitors arrived.
Two middle-aged people, a man and a woman, along with an elderly gentleman, appeared from the road leading to the town.
They walked steadily, and soon they reached Red Moon.
"Good afternoon, Lady Red Moon," they greeted her.
"Good afternoon, Lord Finn, Dan," Red Moon replied, addressing the three individuals in front of her in order.
They were Lord An Rui of the town, Botanist Finn, who took care of crops, and Captain Dan, leader of the Hunter Squad.
"There's no need to be so formal; just call me An Rui," the town lord said, dismissing the formality.
After this, Red Moon led them into the chapel.
The four of them sat down, maintaining a tacit distance of at least two meters, and a heart-to-heart debate began.
As the local lord, An Rui spoke first, "As you all know, since we lost contact with the outside world, the town has been short-staffed."
"And to be frank, we don't have someone like the Organizer who can manage everything alone."
"So, to maintain the necessary order and ensure a normal life for everyone, I believe this unexpected young man should follow me and learn the art of war to face potential future crises."
The town lord wore a coarse cloth outfit, and although he was no longer young, he had a vigorous spirit and a robust physique.
He sat upright, and a silver flask hung at his waist. After speaking, he smiled and looked at the other three, his expression filled with genuine confidence.
However, the hunter captain, Dan, couldn't hold back.
This hunter, although a lady, had a strong character and was not weak-willed: "Sir, I usually support you, but this time, I think you should let him join my team!"
"The Hunter Squad hasn't had new blood for a long time. If this continues, the food income from hunting will definitely decrease. The grouse you wanted to get last night was only found in a trap far north!"
An Rui's smile vanished, and he slammed his hand on the chapel's chair, standing up.
"Hey, wasn't that grouse eaten to celebrate your child?"
"And on this year's Harvest Day, there were only three people in the entire town, and one of them was from your family!"
"You're still not satisfied, and now you want to take him from me?"
The female hunter turned her face away, rolling her eyes.
She didn't directly confront her lord but stubbornly replied, "My son is very suitable for our family's traditional skills. I will never let him follow in my footsteps and become a hunter who only knows how to venture into the woods."
"Who cares about your family matters?" An Rui retorted, addressing Dan.
Then, he turned to Red Moon, who had remained silent.
He knew that she held the key to deciding the new Awakened's path.
"Red Moon, I know he has become your disciple," An Rui said.
"But I assure you, that child can stay with me, and I will provide him with the best guidance and teachings to the best of my abilities!"
The elderly nun, however, spoke in a calm tone: "Lin Sai is a Self-Awakened, with high talent, and he possesses Life Essence."
"Then he should follow me!" An Rui exclaimed upon hearing the terms Self-Awakened and Life Essence.
"Like me, he has Life Essence and is Self-Awakened! Oh, heavens! If he embarks on the path of war, I will teach him everything I know, guaranteeing that his skills will transcend five times, achieving accomplishments beyond imagination!"
An Rui looked at the three around him and emphasized, "Moreover, with this assurance, even if I die in 50 years..."
With this child, the town can at least persist for another two hundred years!"
Among the various types of Essence, Life Essence is the only one that can increase lifespan in the early stages, and this is of great significance.
As soon as she heard this, Hunter Dan immediately started grumbling beside them:
"Fifth stage? If such a genius were in the heart of the War Academy, even a seventh-stage Martial Cultivator from Narckbondok would be willing to personally guide them. What's so extraordinary about three skill upgrades?"
An Rui's sharp hearing caught this, and he immediately glared at her.
"Dan, how many times have you upgraded your hunting skills?"
The female hunter replied without hesitation:
"Three times!"
"Then you can shut up. He won't become more than a Woodsman even if he reaches the cap."
"For the next month, don't even think about getting a single piece of jerky from your manor!"
"Where do you expect me to hunt in the winter?!"
"What about your skills?!"
"With just three upgrades, of course, I can't catch any prey!"
Apart from the bickering duo, Finn, a white-haired nonagenarian, was observing the situation. He rubbed his temples as he watched the arguing An Rui and Red Moon, and then he gave Red Moon a gentle, wry smile.
"Red Moon, I just hope that my knowledge can be passed on and not end here."
"Moreover, everyone in the town needs healthy and abundant food."
The others heard the kind-hearted Finn speak up and join the dispute.
An Rui immediately jumped out of the argument and quickly objected to Finn's latter statement:
"Finn, haven't you already improved the new crops?"
"As long as the townsfolk cultivate diligently, the grains produced at your level can definitely sustain everyone here. Moreover, growing crops relies on people's hard work; the abilities of the Life Academy are merely supplementary."
Finn nodded in agreement but still didn't want to give up:
"But An Rui, I also want my skills to be passed on."
"After the teacher leaves here, I'll be the sole inheritor of his knowledge. If I die here, this technique will truly have no one to inherit."
An Rui had a completely different view on this:
"If we all die, your teacher won't either."
"Those brave souls who venture beyond the Great Cavern are all Ascended at the sixth and seventh stages. They're tough as nails!"
Finn's wrinkled face gave a wry smile and he fell silent.
At this moment, An Rui felt he had the upper hand and turned to Red Moon:
"Look, their demands can be met. Only the town's continuation truly needs such talent."
Red Moon, as always, shook her head:
"My disciple is still young. At this age, if he only comes into contact with the art of war... he might become irritable and aggressive, easily controlled by his own anger."
"Do you think I'd raise him like that?"
An Rui felt that this was unreasonable:
"If I were truly controlled by desire, then today I'd forcibly take the child away. Who in this town could stop me?"
Red Moon calmly replied:
"You're a good person. But a child's growth is not so simple."
"I'd rather not be a good person!"
An Rui was at a loss with the nun.
He took the silver flask from his waist and took a swig of liquor. Then, he leaned back in the chapel and closed his eyes.
At this point, the three of them basically confirmed that their mission had failed.
After all, Red Moon's attitude was unwavering.
They were all companions who had endured hardships together in the hidden frontier, relying on each other. No one wanted to create a big conflict over this matter.
Just as the three were about to give up, Red Moon suddenly spoke:
"My disciple is a very smart child, gifted. You can each guide him in your respective fields."
"If he's truly willing to embark on a path, I believe he'll make the right choice."
Silence filled the chapel.
The three Awakened, sitting in their respective corners, contemplated the offer.
Normally, out of pride in their skills, they would never accept such a proposal.
But the current situation in the town was that Awakened individuals were in short supply.
And their individual needs.
These factors forced them to seriously consider this choice.
