Chapter 13: Someone's Looking for You
Chapter 13: Someone's Looking for You
"By the way, Thigh..." Fang Sisi wanted to say something more.
"Can you stop calling me Thigh?" Qiao Sang interrupted her directly.
"Then how about I call you Beautiful Thigh?" Fang Sisi asked.
Qiao Sang: "..."
Under Qiao Sang's death glare, Fang Sisi finally changed her tune, "Qiao Sang, have you already bonded with a familiar?"
No newly awakened Beastmaster could resist the temptation to bond with a familiar as soon as possible.
Qiao Sang nodded without denying it.
"Then you..."
Fang Sisi was about to ask more, but the noise in the classroom suddenly went silent.
Looking up, they saw that the Class Teacher had arrived...
In the next second, Fang Sisi's face turned pale.
Oh no, she hadn't finished copying her homework!
"We'll gather on the playground in five minutes." The Class Teacher said, glancing in Qiao Sang's direction.
Wencheng Junior High School's 4,000 students and 300 teachers all gathered on the playground, forming a dense crowd.
"Why is the whole school here?" Fang Sisi, standing at the back, poked Qiao Sang with her finger.
"I don't know", Qiao Sang replied.
Junior high students in the final year usually didn't join the first- and second-year students for morning assemblies. Even if the school required a gathering, there were always a few classes that were exceptions.
Qiao Sang looked up at the stage and noticed that all the school's top brass, including the Principal, Vice Principal, and Head of Discipline, were present. This was a rare sight at a regular morning assembly.
Principal Chen Yongfeng was giving his usual speech, repeating the same old phrases that he used every time. There was nothing new or exciting about it.
Bored, Qiao Sang didn't pay attention to what was being said on stage.
A few minutes later, a thunderous applause erupted, and Qiao Sang subconsciously joined in.
A small figure from the third-year class walked up to the stage.
"Respected teachers, dear students, good morning. I am Dai Shushu from Class 9, Grade 3. It is a great honor..."
Qiao Sang had thought it was just a regular assembly, but it turned out to be a personal commendation for Dai Shushu.
Qiao Sang hadn't interacted with Dai Shushu much, but with all the chatter around her, she knew a bit about her.
Dai Shushu came from a poor family and was the only student receiving the school's scholarship. She had been the top student in her grade for all three years of junior high and had been spontaneously awakened, earning her a direct admission to Beastmaster High School. She was a typical example of a success story.
"What's the point of being directly admitted if she can't afford a familiar?" a boy standing to the right sneered.
"Neither of her parents are Beastmasters. How did they end up with a spontaneously awakened Beastmaster?" someone else remarked.
Qiao Sang was a bit surprised. As the Beastmaster society evolved, humans had long realized that the chances of a Beastmaster couple having a Beastmaster child were much higher.
The higher the rank of the Beastmaster parents, the more likely their child would have high talent.
Conversely, if both parents were ordinary people, the chances of their child becoming a Beastmaster were only 2%.
While it was still possible for ordinary parents to have a Beastmaster child, the probability of a spontaneous awakening was almost nonexistent.
Qiao Sang became interested and listened intently to the speech.
"This direct admission to Holy Water High School is a result of my own efforts, but it wouldn't have been possible without the support of my teachers..."
Qiao Sang's eyelashes fluttered.
Both she and Dai Shushu were spontaneously awakened, and with Holy Water High School mentioned, it was hard for Qiao Sang not to compare herself to Dai Shushu.
The comparison left her feeling disheartened, and she lost interest in the rest of the speech.
Back in the classroom, Qiao Sang focused all her attention on her books.
As a junior high school student nearing the High School Entrance Exam, the required courses had already been completed. The main focus now was on reviewing and working through practice tests.
[3000 years ago, the Catastrophic Disaster, which included earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions, plunged the world into an apocalyptic atmosphere. Which Beastmaster stopped this catastrophe?]
[A. Chen Jiading]
[B. Sen Xiaoman]
[C. Wang Wenyu]
[D. Wang Yao]
Qiao Sang had seen quite a few of these historical questions in the past few days. The disaster 3000 years ago was not caused by natural calamities but by human actions.
It was Wang Yao who created the disaster using his familiar. As an SS-Class Beastmaster, he had the complete ability to alter nature.
As the number of awakenings in the Beastmaster Codex increased, Beastmasters would receive certain benefits from their familiars when they reached D-Class, affecting their lifespan and physical constitution.
These benefits grew stronger with each level increase.
Unless directly attacked, it was difficult to sustain injuries from the aftermath.
Wang Yao, with his SS-Class Beastmaster physique, managed to break through the Alliance’s encirclement, killing 223 Beastmasters, including 11 S-Class Beastmasters.
An S-Class Beastmaster typically required at least a century of effort, and the Alliance suffered heavy losses.
Later, SS-Class Beastmaster Wang Wenyu returned from Flame Sky Star and subdued Wang Yao, but five of his familiars, who had always accompanied him, died in the battle.
Wang Wenyu withdrew from the world after that.
It was easy to choose D if one wasn’t careful with this question.
The last mock exam had featured this question, and Qiao Sang had chosen D not because she hadn’t read it clearly, but because of the rule of three long and one short.
She looked at the question again and changed her previous answer.
"Qiao Sang, someone is looking for you", a girl sitting by the door called out.
Qiao Sang looked up to see a girl in a faded school uniform smiling at her from the doorway.
"It’s Dai Shushu. When did you get to know her?" Fang Sisi asked in surprise.
Dai Shushu was a well-known figure in the school, naturally drawing the attention of her classmates, who all turned their heads to look.
"I don’t know her", Qiao Sang said, puzzled.
She walked out.
"What do you need?" Qiao Sang asked, her face full of confusion.
She was certain that her predecessor had no connection with Dai Shushu. One was a top student, the other a poor one, and they were in different classes. Near graduation, she couldn’t think of why the other girl would be looking for her.
"I’m apologizing on behalf of my mom", Dai Shushu said.
She had a delicate, almost ethereal appearance, looking frail due to poor nutrition, as if she could be blown away by the wind.
"What did she say?" Qiao Sang raised an eyebrow.
"Didn’t Aunt tell you? Last Friday, my mom said some unpleasant things to Aunt. There were teachers around, so I couldn’t interject. Is Aunt okay?" Dai Shushu said softly.
Qiao Sang was silent for a moment, then asked, "What did your mom say?"
Dai Shushu looked apologetic, "Just some harsh words. My mom didn’t mean it, and Aunt said some things too." She paused, "The teachers saw they were about to fight and made Aunt leave. I felt bad about it."
Qiao Sang’s expression was blank, "The teacher made my mom leave. What does that have to do with you?"
Dai Shushu smoothed her hair, "If it weren’t for me, the teacher wouldn’t have made Aunt leave."
"I see", Qiao Sang said. "What did your mom say at the time?"
Dai Shushu lowered her head, making her even shorter than Qiao Sang, and her expression was hidden.
"My mom said that your poor grades are because you lack a father’s guidance, and that you only Spontaneously Awakened by sheer luck. She also said that Aunt is so fierce, no wonder she got divorced."
She looked up, appearing innocent, "So, did you really Spontaneously Awaken?"
