Chapter 13: A Sudden Turn of Events
Chapter 13: A Sudden Turn of Events
After obtaining his new badge, Leon, having separated from the Bandage Lady, rushed into the mall adjacent to the hospital with his sniper rifle. He headed straight for his chosen sniping position, while across the road, the Red Brick Road Hospital had already transformed into a hellish scene.
The usually bustling first-floor lobby was now mostly empty, with most people having been swallowed by the cold floor tiles. Patients who were too weak to move lay helplessly, unable to escape, only able to stretch their arms upwards in a futile attempt to reach safety.
The entire lobby looked like a concrete mixture of countless struggling bodies, arms reaching desperately upwards. The varying heights and the constant grasping of the arms created a living, hellish scene.
Perhaps due to the carpeted floor on the fourth floor, the patients in the intensive care unit were slightly better off, as they had not yet been swallowed by the tiles.
However, looking at the situation in the corridor outside, neither the patients nor the nurses dared to venture beyond the carpeted area, fearing that stepping outside its protective range would result in them being buried alive in the floor tiles, just like the patients in the corridor.
This situation couldn't continue!
Looking at the patients sinking deeper and deeper into the floor in the corridor, an older nurse grew anxious and scanned the surroundings. Upon spotting a window, her eyes lit up.
"The window! We can get out through the window!"
"Yes! We can even jump down!"
Hearing her words, the younger nurse, whose right hand was skinned, trembled. It was as if she had been infused with some mysterious power, and she stood up from the carpet, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
"This is only the fourth floor! With some luck, we might not even die from jumping!"
"Wait... Cough! Wait! There's no need to jump!"
Hearing the younger nurse, Anna, who was on the bed, propped herself up and quickly spoke up to stop her.
"The bedsheets, curtains... Cough... and the sofa's fabric! If we tie them together and find a sturdy place to secure them..."
We can climb down safely!
"I'll do it!"
Understanding Anna's intention, the younger nurse was overjoyed. Ignoring her injured right hand, she quickly tore down the curtains, then rushed to the bed in two strides and roughly pulled the coughing girl off.
"What are you doing?!"
The older nurse, not expecting such an action, quickly supported Anna to prevent her from falling. She glared at the younger nurse and said, "She's still sick! And if it weren't for her stopping you, you would have jumped already!"
"I... I'm doing this for everyone to get out faster!"
The younger nurse seemed to realize she had gone too far, but she was clearly terrified by the strange situation outside. As she tied the bedsheet to the curtain with her bloody hand, she spoke incoherently, "I... I'm getting married next month! I don't want to die! It's too... scary! This... this is too terrifying! It must be the devil's temptation! I refuse to die here!"
"Wait! Don't go down yet!"
Noticing that she had tied one end of the 'rope' to a corner cabinet nailed to the wall and was about to leave without securing the other end, the older nurse hurriedly said, "There's still a patient here! This young girl is very sick! She doesn't have the strength to hold onto the curtain! We must lower her down first before we leave!"
"Who cares... Ah, never mind!"
Under the older nurse's stern gaze, the younger nurse's expression changed as she seemed to remember that the people upstairs might be able to untie the 'escape rope'. Her face turned slightly ugly, and she awkwardly smiled, "I meant... my hand hurts, and I'm afraid I can't hold her... like this! Don't worry! As soon as I get out, I'll find help and come back for you!"
After saying this, without waiting for the other two to react, the younger nurse grabbed the curtain covered in bloody handprints and quickly climbed out the window, starting to descend slowly.
"..."
What a jerk!
The older nurse gritted her teeth in anger, watching her colleague being abandoned without hesitation. She then supported Anna, who was coughing incessantly, and gently reassured her, "It's okay that she left. Listen carefully, child. I'll tie one end of the curtain around your waist, and then I'll slowly lower you down. Try to grab onto any protrusions on the outer wall, and be careful not to..."
"Ahhhh!"
At that moment, a terrified scream echoed from outside the window. The older nurse, startled, peered out and was shocked to discover that the younger nurse, who had just descended, was now stuck on the second-floor outer wall! It was as if she had been swallowed by the hospital's outer wall, just like the patients in the corridor.
"Help... Help me! Save me!"
How could they possibly save her?
Last time, I was able to pull you back, but this time, I really can't...
The older nurse, after glancing at her terrified colleagues, couldn't help but sigh deeply, her eyes revealing a deep sense of despair.
If even the outer walls of the hospital were 'eating people,' then this last route was likely blocked too. Would they have to jump down directly? Even if she could take a chance and try jumping to see if she would survive the fall, what about the kind-hearted girl who was still sick?
...
"Knock knock knock."
Just as the two in the ward were at a loss, the glass door of the intensive care unit was suddenly knocked on.
"Are you Anna?"
After confirming the room number, Bandage Woman's gaze immediately locked onto the sickly-looking girl. She quickly approached her, saying concisely:
"I'm your brother's colleague. I'm here to rescue you."
Brother?!
Upon hearing Bandage Woman's words, Anna's anxious expression relaxed a little.
Great! Since she came to rescue her, it proved that her brother should be safe! But... why was her brother's colleague dressed so strangely? After examining the tall woman wrapped in bandages and wearing a strange mask, Anna grasped the middle-aged nurse's hand and cautiously asked:
"This... um... sister! If it's possible, can you also rescue her? If not for her care..."
"Yes, I can."
Glancing at the middle-aged nurse, who also looked full of hope, Bandage Woman didn't waste any words. She directly nodded, then led the two to the window and...
"Hmm?"
Looking at the young nurse who had already been 'swallowed' halfway by the outer wall, Bandage Woman frowned and turned back to ask:
"Is she with you? Do you want to save her?"
Hearing that the woman in the black mask could possibly save her, the young nurse on the outer wall immediately lit up with joy. She pleaded with eager eyes:
"Yes, yes, yes! We're together! Please, say something for me! Please help me!"
Looking at the young nurse's pleading gaze, the middle-aged nurse, who had just been filled with anger, sighed. Just as she was about to say something, she felt her hand being squeezed tightly.
"No!"
The middle-aged nurse was surprised to find that the kind-hearted young girl, who was willing to take risks and let patients into her room, had this time resolutely chosen to shake her head in denial.
"She's the one who wanted to abandon us and run away. If rescuing her isn't too troublesome, please save her as well. But if it's dangerous, then don't bother. Just rescue the aunt next to me."
"Okay, I understand."
Glancing at the calm and rational girl, who remained clear-headed even in the face of this bizarre incident, Bandage Woman smiled and nodded. She then pulled the curtain hanging by the window and tied it around the middle-aged nurse. With a firm grip on the windowsill, she extended her arm out the window.
The three remaining women were stunned by the mysterious Bandage Woman's actions. Despite her petite appearance, she managed to 'hang' the middle-aged nurse, who weighed at least a hundred pounds, straight down without any contact with the outer wall, relying solely on her pure arm strength.
After checking on the situation inside the room, Bandage Woman untied the bandage on her wrist and tied it to the medicine cabinet, securing it with the IV stand. She then carried Anna, who was filled with astonishment, out the window.
"Go find your brother!"
As she gently lowered Anna down, Bandage Woman leaned out and whispered:
"He's safe now, right over..."
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
Four simultaneous explosions completely drowned out Bandage Woman's instructions. The curtain tied to the corner of the window suddenly shook, and the four bolts securing it to the wall burst out simultaneously!
Amid the middle-aged nurse's hysterical screams, Anna, who was hanging in mid-air, plummeted. The metal bedhead, weighing over three hundred pounds, followed, crashing down on Bandage Woman's back along the escape rope formed by the curtain!
